TERM FOUR WEEK FOUR

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past and present.

GRANDPARENTS ASSEMBLY

On Monday, we celebrated Grandparents Day, a perfect opportunity to acknowledge the significant impact that grandparents have on the lives of our students and our community. Our students wrote poems about why they love their grandparents, the choir sang, the dance group entertained us and the band played beautifully for our audience. At the conclusion, I did observe some tears of joy. I would like to thank Louise Howlett who organised this special day and our student leaders who led the assembly. I would also like to congratulate the students and the teachers who prepared the Ukulele, the dance, choir and the band groups and for their polished performances. The students and teachers in Kindy, Year 1 and Year 2 also prepared special items for our assembly which highlighted the very special relationship that they have with their grandparents. What a fabulous assembly!

Finally, thank you to all the grandparents for attending our Grandparents Day and coming from near and far to be with us. Just as important, our thoughts were also with those grandparents who for many different reasons couldn’t make the journey on the day.

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION

We welcomed our 2025 Kindergarten students and their parents on Wednesday morning  for their orientation program. The students had their first ‘big school’ experience in the classroom engaging in learning activities, exploring their new learning environment and the opportunity to meet their peers. While the children were engaged in their activities, parents attended an informative session where they learned about the Kindergarten curriculum, daily routines and expectations as well as gaining an insight into joining Rozelle Public School’s parent community. Our goal was to ensure both students and families feel confident and prepared for the exciting journey ahead. We are thrilled to welcome our new Kindergarten students into our school and look forward to a year full of growth, learning, and fun. Thank you to everyone who attended and made this orientation such a success. Thank you to Sepfora for organising the orientation and the information for parents and thank you to all the staff who supported her on the day. We can’t wait to see our Kindergarten students next year!

BAND CAMP

Last Wednesday, a group of very tired children returned from 'The Tops' after an action-packed and rewarding band camp. From all accounts, the experience was a resounding success, challenging yet incredibly rewarding, leaving everyone with new skills, strengthened teamwork and a set of fresh performance pieces to showcase in upcoming assemblies.

A huge thank you goes to our parent volunteers, Sarah and Sally, for their support; to our attending teachers, Ms Lungo and Ms McLachlan for their guidance; and of course, to our dedicated RPS music tutors, Helen, Bruce, and Joe whose expertise made this immersive learning experience possible and our band co-ordinator Matt for organising it. We’re excited to see the growth and progress from the camp come to life in future performances!

SHADE STRUCTURE COMPLETION

On behalf of the entire school community, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the P&C for their substancial contribution to the new shade structure. Your generous support has made a significant impact, providing much-needed relief from the sun and creating a more comfortable and enjoyable environment for our students and staff. We truly appreciate all the hard work, dedication and patience you've put into this project and we are grateful for your continued commitment to improving our school. Thank you for your ongoing support and we look forward to working together on the next project!

RECENT ACTIVITIES & EVENTS

YEAR 4 COMMUNITY CENTRE EXCURSION

On Monday, 28 October, 3/4 Base went on an excursion to the Rozelle Neighbourhood Community Centre/Garden. There we met Marco and his team of volunteers from Good in the Hood. After a short tour of the community centre, it’s garden and all it has to offer the residents of Rozelle, we were tasked with an important job. Our goal for the day was to make 40 meals for residents of Rozelle in need. We surpassed that goal by making 50 meals, as well as 60 chocolate and banana muffins and 30 lolly boxes for Halloween treats for local kids. Some of us were cooking the meals which was fried rice, chicken and pork topped with scrambled eggs and we chopped shallots to garnish the meals as well. Others made the muffins, some helped in the garden and the chicken coup and we even had a few students on the BBQ to cook us a sausage sizzle lunch. Once the meals were cooked, they were portioned into containers that were labelled with heartfelt messages from each of us in our class. Some of these people that receive these meals are people that have no one to talk to and feel like they aren’t part of the community. When they receive these meals with these messages it makes them feel apart of their community and lets them know that people care for them. For some of these people, these meals and messages are the highlight of their day or week. While we were there, we helped unload the Oz Harvest food truck with donations of fresh food, meat, milk and drinks. Many kids helped to load the fridges with the foods and produce whilst others helped to clean up the spaces we used to make today’s goods. We also stocked the community pantry with some goods for people to take.

In 2-3 weeks time, the community centre will be opening a new, refurbished side of the building to enhance accessibility. When members of the community come with their carers they will learn to cook, do their own laundry, make their beds and other general life skills. Or they can chill out in the sensory room, the media room or even create in the art room. The main point of today was to leave the neighbourhood centre feeling proud of what we have done to help all these people in need. We know that there are 50 people out there in our community that will enjoy a healthy, made with love meal because the work we did today.

ZANNA AND THE LOST CODE INCURSION

On Tuesday, Years 3 and 4 had a great visit from Brainstorm Productions. It focused on positive values, respect and responsibility and provided information about how to build safer and more positive online experiences. Their presentation of Zanna and the Lost Code was educational and about bullying and cyber-bulling. We learnt the importance of standing up against bullies for ourselves and our friends. We enjoyed it because the acting was cool. It was funny, interesting and well-presented.

STAGE 3 SOCCER GALA DAY

Last Friday 50 energetic students from our school participated in the highly anticipated Soccer Gala Day, competing against teams from various schools in the Inner West. Over the day, all students showcased impressive skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The day was filled with thrilling moments and friendly competition, with every student giving their best effort. By the end of the day, all participants could hold their heads high, proud of their performance and the positive spirit they brought to each match. A special mention to the Junior Boys soccer team who progressed through the day undefeated! A huge congratulations to everyone for their dedication and determination, making it a memorable event for all involved!

MUSIC & CREATIVE ARTS PROGRAM

BAND NEWS

RPS BAND NEWS CAMP FINISHES ON A HIGH NOTE AS RPS BAND MARCHES ON!

Some very tired children came off the coach back from 'The Tops' last Wednesday. From all reports the children had a very successful (if exhausting) time at the band camp with everyone coming on in leaps and bounds and getting plenty of new performance pieces under their belt which they'll be showcasing over the coming assemblies. A big thank you to Sarah & Sally our parent volunteers, Ms Lungo and Ms Mac our attending teachers and of course to Helen, Bruce and Joe our RPS music tutors, without whom none of this would have been possible. Thanks for making this a truly immersive learning experience!

JOINING THE 2025 TRAINING BAND

It's that time again when we look to recruit the next crop of talented young Rozellians currently in Year 2 to join the 2025 RPS training Band. We also encourage children currently in Years 3-5 to join as it's never too late!  No experience is necessary. As per last year we will be holding a simple demonstration event during school hours, led by our current Senior band, to exhibit the different instruments we have available for hire. As soon as I have a firm date, I will send out permission slips via email for children to attend.

RPS STRINGS PROGRAM

A reminder that the RPS Strings program is back up and running and we are very pleased to announce that Bianca Parison is now offering Violin/Cello tutoring on Thursdays. You can read Bianca's bio here. Bianca has limited openings for those wishing to take lessons during and after school hours if they are in OSH Club. If your child is in Years K-6 and interested in finding out more, please contact biancaviolin@gmail.com

K-2 PERCUSSION GROUP

Bruce Stephens runs a very popular Friday lunchtime percussion group for Stage 1 children in Kindy through to Year 2. Bruce teaches the children basic composition using standard music notation and introduces them to great beats using an array of percussive instruments including drums,  drum sticks and boom whackers. The class is focused on making music fun!  It also provides a springboard to play in the RPS band by encouraging them to learn to play as a group. We are now accepting expressions of interest if your child would be interested to join in Term 1 2025. Please contact matthew.roe3@det.nsw.edu.au
