Drummoyne Public School

Term 3 Week 3 Newsletter - Friday 9 August 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Reflections on Education Week

I want to extend my thanks to all of you for your incredible support during Education Week. This week has been a true celebration of public education and our school community. It was wonderful to see so many of you at our special assembly on Monday morning, enjoying the students' performances, visiting our open classrooms, indulging in the cake stall, exploring the beautiful art trail on Thursday and also celebrating the unveiling of our two new Indigenous Murals.

The theme of this year's Education Week, ‘Proud to Belong’, resonates deeply with me as a school leader. It is a reminder of the strength and unity we build when everyone in our school community comes together in support of our common cause - providing the very best for our children. The sense of belonging that we foster here at Drummoyne Public School is what makes our school a place where every child feels valued, supported and proud to be themselves. Thank you once again for your ongoing support and for helping to make our school a place where everyone truly belongs.

Fete Preparations and Fundraising

Thank you also to the members of the Fete Committee and parent volunteers for the tireless work being done to prepare for our upcoming Fete. Your efforts and enthusiasm are what make this event such a special part of our school year.

As we continue preparation, I’d like to remind everyone that donations for the Fete are entirely optional. The primary purpose of the Fete is to bring our community together. Whether you choose to contribute by donating, volunteering, or simply joining us on the day to enjoy the festivities, your involvement is what truly matters. I look forward to celebrating with you all on the day.

Semester 1 Reports and Parent-Teacher Interview Survey

A reminder to complete our parent survey on the school’s Semester 1 reports and P-T Interviews. We made a number of changes to  our Semester 1 reports and introduced the post-report parent-teacher interviews this year. Your feedback will help us gauge the effectiveness of these changes and enhance our practices to better support your child/ren’s learning moving forward.

THIS WEEK AT DPS

Debating Report Term 3 - Week 3

This week Drummoyne debated against Rozelle Public School in our fourth round. The topic was ‘That self-serve at supermarkets is a good idea’.

The affirmative team, the Hawkes were the away team, with Shireen as 1st speaker, Aria as 2nd speaker, Aydin as 3rd speaker and David as team advisor. They presented some great points and had clearly done some extensive research, driving their case home with a compelling team line, ‘Scan, bag, and go: it's the future, don't you know!’ Congratulations to all four students for putting up a good fight against Rozelle.

The Lyons were the home team. As the negative, they argued that there are many drawbacks associated with self-serve checkouts in supermarkets, presenting compelling evidence to back up their arguments. The Lyons’ team line was ‘Self-serve lanes drive us all insane!’ Congratulations to 1st speaker Ava, 2nd speaker Phoebe, 3rd speaker Isaac and team advisor Sophia on winning their debate.

Many thanks to Shireen's dad, Pankja, for providing transport. Also, thank you to our chairperson Sophie, timekeepers Oliver and Eme, and meeter and greeter, Oliver.

Bay Run Challenge

Last Sunday I participated in the 2km Bay Run Challenge. I felt I was coming first but I knew I wasn't. Out of 258 people running the 2km race I came 55th. My time was 10.51- this was a PB for me.

Although I pushed my limits, the run was also fun and exciting. I loved running beside Mr Nguyen and it was great having the community come together. I had to keep jogging and then sprinted at the end.

Every person got a medal. I'm already preparing for the Bay Run Challenge next year!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Primary Lights for Learning Incursion

Reminder - our Primary Lights for Learning Incursion is on next Wednesday, 14 August.

Times: Stage 3 - 9.30am-11am and Stage 2 - 12.20pm-1.50pm.

Drummoyne parents Hannah Heath and Jane Duquemin have been working with our environmental leaders group to deepen students’ understanding of renewable energy and its potential impact on their lives. Jane has arranged for the Origin Energy Foundation to bring next week's incursion to our students free of charge.  The Origin Foundation has partnered with SolarBuddy to support this important work to improve educational outcomes for young people facing energy poverty.

Solar Buddy is an impact organisation uniting a global community to literally illuminate the futures of children who don't have access to electricity. Extreme energy poverty is one of the biggest obstacles some communities face; one of the worst forms of poverty that hardly anyone knows about. It is a complex challenge, impacting the health and wellbeing, educational outcomes and economic stability of these communities.

The teachers, students and volunteer parents at Drummoyne Public School look forward to working with Origin Energy to provide a Solar Buddy to primary school students in Papua New Guinea who reside along the Kokoda Track. We aim to make 100 solar torches which will be tagged and tested before being sent abroad.  By building these solar lights we aim to raise our community's awareness about energy poverty and how more fortunate communities like our own can provide opportunities where our children can be involved in creating a world where no-one is left behind.

Should you require more information about this program then please don't hesitate to contact me at michelle.odowd@det.nsw.edu.au or go to the website .

A HUGE thankyou to everyone who bought a book from the book fair last Monday and an even HUGER thankyou to those generous families who donated a book to our library! Every book that was bought helped to raise money for new resources for the library!

NSW PSSA Touch Tournament

From Tuesday to Thursday this week I went to Wollongong to represent Sydney East at the NSW PSSA Touch Tournament.

We played 12 round games, we lost 1 and won 11. We made the semi-finals, which my team won. Soon we had the grand final, I was very nervous. I started on as a winger. My team scored the first try and at half time the score was 2-2. We played for another 12 minutes, and the final score was 3-4. It was a very close game and Sydney East had won a silver medal.

Overall, we played an amazing tournament, and I made lots of new friends.

    P&C ANNOUNCEMENTS

    Message to our Fete Rockstars

I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the enthusiasm, skills, time and effort that many of our fellow parents are putting into the upcoming fete.

From planning out how we communicate to parents, kids, sponsors and the community, to making the fete look and feel visually exciting, to encouraging sponsorship from every corner of the local business world, to booking in everything we will need on the day. There are literally HUNDREDS of tasks that are happening behind the scenes right now, so if you know someone who is working on the fete, give them a hug, a pat on the back or buy them a coffee - they need it, and we wouldn't be holding a fete without them.

This means not only will we have a fun day with our families, but we will be able to purchase cool new modular desks and work towards some adventurous nature play areas!

BREAKING NEWS fete update is in!

DPS fete news host Tyler Bridges has the latest class leaderboard for the fundraising pizza prize, and our guest reporter Hamilton Brierty shares an update on more mufti days to come!

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book.
