Staffing news

It is with mixed emotions that I announce to the Telopea community that Ms Catherine Michie will be leaving our school at the end of Week 8. Ms Michie is a much-loved member of our teaching staff who has given immeasurable service to the students and community of Telopea over many years. We thank Ms Michie for her dedication and wish her all the best with her move out of Sydney and at her new school. Ms Michie's last day will be Friday 20th June.

We have a new class teacher for the 3/4 Wombats for the remainder of the year. Mr Joel O’Brien is an experienced Stage 2 teacher, joining us from Dee Why Public School. He has met the class and will visit our school in coming weeks for a thorough handover with Ms Michie. His first day with the class will be Monday 23rd June 2025.

Student Achievement

Congratulations to the team of runners who proudly represented our school at the Zone Cross Country Carnival at Greystanes last week. Despite the wet, freezing cold weather, all students tried their very best achieving impressive results. Thank you to the parents, carers, Mrs Vasilareas and Mrs Repousis who came along to support the students on the day. A special mention to Matias H. who placed 7th in his age group and will go on to represent the Merrylands Parramatta Zone at the Sydney West Carnival on the 26th June.

Mrs Erin Dooley

Principal (Rel.)

A message from Ms Catherine Michie

To the Telopea families and community,

I started working at Telopea Public School in 2013. It now time for me to say goodbye. Working with all of you has been a privilege. To my students, thank you for your enthusiasm, growth and inspiration. To the parents and carers, thank you for your support and partnership. I will carry the memories of working at Telopea Public School with me and will cherish the connections I have made; with executive, teachers, SLSOs, students, parents, carers and volunteers- in particular, Story Factory.

Thank you all for being part of this chapter in my life.

I am leaving Sydney to chase my dreams. Dream, make plans and work towards enabling dreams to become reality. Whatever you can dream, begin it now.

My philosophy is learning and education equal empowerment.

Read and learn as much as you can. Learn and be your best.

With gratitude, Ms Catherine Michie

Celebrating student learning

Congratulations to these students who have achieved a learning goal and have proudly shared this achievement with Mrs Dooley in the Principal's office this month.

Student Attendance

Last week, we had a significant drop in student attendance, with almost all classes in the 'At Risk' category at under 90%. Students are encouraged to come to school every day unless they are very sick. Please remind your children of good hand hygiene and to cover their mouth when they cough and sneeze as we come into the cooler months. Hopefully we can keep those germs at bay!

Congratulations to these classes with the best attendance in recent weeks:

Week 3 - 3/4 Kookaburras

Week 4 - 3/4 Wombats

Week 5 - Year 1 Quokkas & Year 6 Emus

Library News

Our school has recently participated in National Simultaneous Storytime 2025. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 25th year, it is a fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy.

The book this year was The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel, our students really enjoyed the themes of family and identity.

Walk Safely to School

During Week 3, students at Telopea Public School participated in Walk Safely to School Day. Teachers conducted important lessons on road safety and many students practised these skills by walking to school safely on the day. Thank you to the SRC for supporting this event and congratulations to the winners of our colouring and design-a-helmet competitions.

Years 3-6 Hyde Park Barracks Excursion

On May 22, 2025 Years 3 - 6 went on a History excursion to Hyde Park. It was a wet and rainy day, and we left school in a bus to get into the city.

We arrived at Hyde Park Barracks, and the first thing we did was eat our lunch. After we had our lunch, each class split into groups. Year 3 and 4 learnt about what it would have been like to be a convict living at the barracks, and Year 5 and 6 learnt about the different experiences of convicts, migrants and Aboriginal people.

We had a really fun day, and liked getting to see different artefacts like clothes and games they played, and getting to swing in the hammocks.

Zone Cross Country

Congratulations to the students from Telopea Public School who proudly represented our school at the Merrylands-Parramatta Zone Cross Country on Wednesday 4 June. Despite the tough weather conditions, our students gave it their all, showing great determination, sportsmanship and school spirit.

A special congratulations to Matias Hererra who has made it through to the Sydney West Cross Country Carnival on Wednesday 18 June and to two other who placed in the top 20 - an amazing achievement!

We are extremely proud of everyone who participated. Thank you to the parents who supported and cheered on their children at the event.

Student Leadership Day

On Tuesday 3rd of June 2025. Slayman, Tracy, Leah and I went to the Cumberland Community of Schools Leadership Day which was located at Cumberland High school. The day was run by the Cumberland High School prefects and leaders. We played multiple games including a game where you design a dress for a person in your team which was my absolute favourite because I was the model for my group. We were split into 5 different groups. My group was purple and my friend, Ivy, was in it too. For a quick snack we got fruits, cupcakes and cookies. At the end everyone got a gift bag that had a bottle, ruler, pen and a sandwich. Then we went back to school. Overall it was a fun experience to have especially with my friends.

What's Happening Year 3/4 Kookaburras

In 3/4 Kookaburras, we’ve been working very hard and learning so many exciting things! We've been collaborating closely with our peers, building confidence as we present our ideas to the class.

In Maths, we've explored fact family triangles, drawn arrays, and applied the commutative property and inverse operations. We've also strengthened our understanding of place value. As part of our measurement unit, we've been using trundle wheels and metre rulers to measure distances around the school.

A big highlight was when our talented classmates Sophie, Isla, and Tristan performed piano at the 3–6 Assembly—what an amazing performance!

In Science, we’ve been learning about the phases of the moon and exploring the wonders of our Solar System. In History, we delved into the First Fleet and early colonisation, learning about this significant time in Australia’s past.

We also kicked off NRL this term and it’s been fantastic! We've learned lots of cool tricks and skills while having heaps of fun.

We’re so proud of everything we’ve achieved so far—keep up the great work, Kookaburras!

Recorder Group Performance

Congratulations to the following successful students who will be performing at the Sydney Opera House in September along with 500 other students from around NSW. Well done to Morgan, Autumn, Zheanne, Sophie, Mackenzie, Lachlan, Youssef, Jacob, Felix and Yechan.

Stewart House Fundraising

In Term 1 students raised donations for the Stewart House charity. Stewart House supports students in education programs and excursions designed to develop their social and emotional skills, build self-esteem and improve their overall wellbeing. Telopea PS fundraised $100 towards this wonderful cause.

Winter Uniform

The official changeover date for Winter Uniform is Monday 19th May. From this date, all students are expected to be in full Winter uniform each day. This includes the correct coloured socks (white for girls and grey for boys) and tights (navy blue). Non-uniform items for layering, particularly those which are not school coloured are not encouraged. Please stick to the school uniform colors. Long sleeve polo shirts are available for students who require a warmer uniform. A reminder to label all clothing items, especially jumpers that students may remove during the day.

Important Reminders

COLLECTING STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL

A reminder that if you have made arrangements for someone to collect your child/ren that is outside of your normal arrangements, please ensure that you have notified the office so we are aware and can let other staff members know in a timely manner.  This applies to leaving early and for the end of the day.

SAFETY

A reminder to all students and parents that entry to the School is via the Pedestrian gate on Chestnut Ave located near Block D. This is for everyone's safety. If you require disabled access there are two entry points into the school via the ramp into the school office and via the gate on the corner of Sturt and Manson Streets.

NOTES SENT HOME

On occasion important notes will be sent home. Please ensure you remember to check your child's bag each day.

CELEBRATIONS

Here at TPS we enjoy celebrating student’s birthdays. You are most welcome to bring in something to celebrate but we ask that individual store bought small bite size cupcakes or individually wrapped sweets are brought in to school as this makes it easier for the students to eat. A large cake makes it difficult to distribute to their classmates.

LOST PROPERTY

There are a number of items in the Lost Property box which do not have names on them. If your child is missing an item, please check this box which is located in the D Block breezeway.

CONTACT INFORMATION OR CIRCUMSTANCE CHANGE

Please ensure that your contact details are up to date. It is important that the School be able to contact you in case of your child being ill, a child not being collected from school or in case of emergency etc. If your family circumstances change, please also provide the school with any updated documentation.

You can notify the school of any changes or updates via written confirmation or complete the template form located in the office foyer.

MOBILE PHONES OR DEVICES

If you require your child to carry a mobile phone/device, you will be required to complete a permission note (please see the school office if you require this note). Student mobile phones/device are to be turned off and handed to the school office during school hours in the morning. Mobile phones/devices will be returned to the students at the end of each day.

Schools as a Community Centre

Dear Telopea PS and SaCC Communities,

Please see the First Aid Course flyer information included in this newsletter.

The First Aid Course is FREE.

Priority will be given to families of Telopea Public School especially parents looking to upskill in preparation to secure employment.

Participants will receive a certificate upon completion.

Places in the course are limited so please contact me directly as soon as possible.

BREAKFAST CLUB

I am sure you're all aware the TPS Breakfast Club operates every Monday and Thursday morning starting from 8:30am. The 8:50am bell is the student's signal to move to lines ready for the start of the school day. For this reason, final breakfast will be available up to 8:50am. Students should make their way to the canteen prior to 8:50 to save waiting in line and to avoid disappointment. In addition, recently a number of students have sheepishly asked if the breakfast served is free....PLEASE TELL YOUR CHILDREN breakfast is FREE
