Beerwah State School

Newsletter 13 September 2024

Principals Report

Dear Parents/Carers,

We have now reached the end of Term 3 for 2024.  Our students and teachers have had a very busy and rewarding term.  Thank you to all of our teachers and teacher aides who go above and beyond for our students every single day here at Beerwah State School.  Thanks also goes to our parents/carers for their support.  Wishing you all a very safe and happy holiday.  I will see everyone back here on Monday 30th September.

Requests for 2025 Class Placements

This week parents and caregivers will be sent a form to provide feedback to assist with class planning for 2025. If students will be moving from Beerwah State School at the end of the year (other than Year 6) we ask that the school be advised via this form. There is also a section for preference for class placements for 2025.

The placement of children in an appropriate learning environment is taken very seriously at Beerwah and there are many elements to take into consideration. One of the factors relates to parent/carer preferences for a particular educational environment. Parents have the opportunity to put in writing educational reasons for a specific learning environment. Whilst all requests will be considered it may not be possible to fill all preferences. Parent preferences are for placement in a learning environment and NOT for a specific teacher, as teachers for year levels will not be decided until all staffing at the school has been finalised. Requests must be in writing and need to be addressed to the ‘Principal’ and handed into the office. These forms are due by Friday, 4th October. No late requests will be accepted.

Kandoo Tally Rewards Afternoon

As we have reached our target of 120,000 Kandoos, we held the Kandoo Rewards Day on Thursday. We combined the two top requests from students.  Thursday was a free dress day combined with free activities in class in the afternoon.  Congratulations to all of our students for making great choices and reaching our Kandoo target for Term 3.

Gambling Grant

Great news!  The P&C has been successful in obtaining funds through the Gambling Grant to build an undercover area on the Senior Oval next to Helping Hands building.  This will provide students, a shaded area to play handball or just to sit and chat at play times.  It will also be very beneficial for our carnivals throughout the year.  A huge thank you to Coralie who drafted the application and to Carolyn Brewer (P&C President) and Jodie for their work with this.

R U OK Day

We hosted an afternoon tea for parents on Thursday afternoon at 2:15pm for R U OK Day outside Admin, and for Staff after school at 3:00pm.  Thank you to all the parents and teachers who attended.  Thank you to the Culture Team for organising this worthwhile event.

Billy Moore Rugby League Cup

Last Week several of our students travelled to Maroochydore to compete in the Billy Moore Rugby League Cup organised by the NRL development team. This was a non-competitive gala day so no scores were kept.   Our students played extremely well displaying exceptional good sportsmanship throughout the day.  Congratulations to all of our participating students, to Mr Deady for organising, Ms Murphy for transporting students and supervising on the day, our volunteer coach (Jesse Savage) and photography from East Coast Images.

BSS Rock Band

Last Wednesday night, our school Rock Band performed at Beerwah State High School’s Musical Evening, under the direction of Chappy Mike. The band performed extremely well!  Congratulations to Annabelle, Tahlia, Seb, Joe, Cylus and Chappy Mike!

SEP Transition Days

Some of our students have participated in the SEP Transition days at Beerwah State High School.  These days have been very successful in assisting our students to transition smoothly into high school next year.  Thank you to our SEP team for organising and supervising our students at these days.

Have a safe and happy holiday!

Talk about it

Our Talk About It program ran through weeks 9 and 10. This important age appropriate program covered respectful relationships education topics such as identity, puberty and health. A big thank-you to Lane who is the education from Life Education and always does an excellent job running these sessions with students. We’d also like to acknowledge P&C for contribution of funds that helps to reduce the cost of this to families.

REMINDER NOTICES

Our school will be using a new Departmental process for sending reminder notices to parents/carers with overdue invoices. Reminder notices will generate periodically once your invoice becomes overdue.

How you will receive the reminder notice:
  • If you have provided us with an email address and you have overdue invoices, you will start to receive reminder notices directly to your email address
  • If you have not provided us with an email address, reminder notices for any overdue invoices will be posted to you.

ACCOUNT QUERIES

If you are unable to pay your invoices before the due date or have a query about an invoice you have received, it is important that you contact us before the invoice is due for payment.

PAYMENT OPTIONS

Beerwah State School is excited to offer all parents the ability to order and pay for your child’s school items using your smartphone, tablet or computer. The new Qkr! (pronounced ‘quicker’) by MasterCard application is a secure and easy way to make school payments at your convenience. We encourage all parents to use Qkr! as it reduces the need to send cash to school or attend in person, and receipts are automatically generated that can be easily retrieved on the app or sent to your email. It is easier for families and it also significantly streamlines operations with the school.  QKR! How to Guide
QKR! is our preferred method for payment via the secure QKR! App.
  • You Can also pay via the secure BPoint  payment portal in QParents.
  • You can also pay via the BPoint link on the invoice you receive via email
  • Cashless payments can be made at the Payment Window by EFTPOS on Monday, Wednesday & Friday morning between 8:30am-10:30am
  • Students may hand permission & payment to the office in a sealed envelope or snaplock bag.

HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Please refer to the Communication Placemat that is available on our website to determine the appropriate method and avenue of communication for any information you require. If you are unsure, please email the school via admin@beerwahss.eq.edu.au and your query will be passed on to the appropriate staff member.

We welcome parents and other members of our diverse community into our school. Working together with the school community, school staff support the learning and wellbeing of every student, and are entitled to a safe work environment. Parents and other visitors to our school support safety by ensuring their communications and conduct at the school and school activities is respectful. Please read our Parent and Community Code of Conduct for more information.

STUDENT MESSAGES AND EARLY COLLECTION

We realise sometimes Parents need to get a message to student/s to change how they are going home, with whom, or need to collect student/s early. We ask Parents, where possible, to please contact the school at their earliest convenience prior to 1:00pm; to advise so messages can go out in rolls and minimise interruptions to class learning time.

Please call prior to arriving to collect student/s so we can have them in the office ready for your arrival. Our break times are 11:00am-11:30am & 1:00pm-1:40pm. We thank you for your support.

CHANGE OF DETAILS

Up to date information helps us look after each of our students. Contact details can be updated through the BSS Skoolbag, QParents app or SZ app. For a hard copy to complete and return, please download from the sidepanel of our school newsletter or website.

R U Okay Day

R U OK” Day was acknowledged and celebrated on Thursday 12th September.  The theme for 2024 is R U OK? Day – Any Day.   Parents enjoyed a free coffee before home time funded by the Beerwah State School Chaplaincy committee. Staff checked in on each other for a conversation at afternoon tea.

Student Services

At Beerwah, the Student Services team meets every second week to discuss how best to support our students’ learning and support needs.  Sometimes students’ needs are identified on enrolment or through our moderation process and other times individual student needs are identified by teachers.

Classroom teachers may discuss student needs with parents and carers and if necessary a referral will be made to the Student Services team.  If this is necessary, a green permission form will be sent home, explaining the process and we encourage you to complete the questionnaire on the rear of the form to help us to understand the needs of your student more clearly.

Our team are currently running an intervention program focussing on supporting students requiring additional support in the areas of phonemic awareness and phonics.

P&C Report

P&C Meetings

Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday 21st October, week 4 of term 4 at 6pm in the library. We will spend this next meeting making plans for 2025, events, fundraisers and how we can help the school to help our children.

Come along and join us and see how you can be a part of a really important group of caring parents and citizens who want to make a difference in our children’s schooling lives.

Volunteering

Did you know: Volunteering gives you a chance to showcase your skills. Look for volunteer opportunities where you can share your skills and expertise in a way that’s fun and enjoyable. If you love baking, sign up to help with the next bake sale. If you’ve got a green thumb, help plant a class or school garden. Others will appreciate your skills and your child will be thrilled to share your involvement with their classmates.

The P&C Association are an approved volunteer organization with Centrelink (Services Australia) so if you need to complete volunteering hours, the school is a great option. This can be extended to grandparents and other friends, they will need to apply for a Blue Card to volunteer in the school which is an easy process we can assist with. Contact us by email and we can arrange to work out how we can help each other.

Facebook Page

If you haven’t already jumped onto our Facebook page, you should. It’s a great place to see what’s coming up, what volunteers are needed & helpful reminders in case you missed the notification. We’ll also share our tuckshop specials and any meal deal information, so if you don’t see the posts, you might miss out!

It’s also the easiest place to get in touch with P&C.

Just find our page and like us to start following.

BSS P&C Facebook page

Events & Fundraising

If any parents and carers have ideas for events or fundraising they would like to see at Beerwah State School, please email the P&C Association at pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au or pop along to our monthly meeting with your ideas, we welcome new ideas.

Art Show

If you were not able to attend the art show, or if you did and loved seeing your child’s artwork, why not turn it into a lasting memory with a calendar, diary, sketchbook or mousepad? We have teamed up with Kids Art Works to offer a variety of products exclusively printed with your own child’s artistic talents displayed. Although Christmas seems a long way off, what a perfect gift for the grandparents or other family members. We are still finalizing details but keep an eye on the newsletter, the Skoolbag app and our Facebook page for further information. Due to production and delivery times, to ensure we all receive our items before the end of term, the ordering will close by the end of week 2. No exceptions.

As soon as the website is completed, full details will be announced and each family will receive a unique code to access their child’s artwork. There is no obligation to purchase but if you are interested in the products that are available, drop into the admin office early next term to have a look at the quality of each item, you’ll want to order them once you see them!

Recycling Programs

Don’t forget to keep saving your empty toothpaste tubes and old toothbrushes, also any pens, texters, highlighters and markers that are no longer working. We collect these items to send to TerraCycle who will turn them into useful products. If you’d like to know more, please have a look at their website www.terracycle.com.au. We are also collecting used Glad (or similar) products – glad wrap, zip lock bags etc, but please make sure they are clean.

Donations can be dropped off to school, collection boxes are available in the library, look out for the notice on Audiri (Skoolbag) for more information.

The school is also registered to collect drink cans and bottles through Containers for Change. There are bins throughout the school so you can drop off your recycling as you bring your child to school.

Book Club

The next issue of book club will be distributed soon. The best way to order is online at www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP all books are delivered to the school and distributed to each child. If you would prefer to order as gifts, ensure you select that option and your items will be available for collection from the office. The due date for orders is always stamped on the front of the brochure so don’t miss out! An extra bonus is that the school receives 15% of all order values to purchase books for our library. Books are such a wonderful addition to any child’s life and there are some amazing prices in the book club.

TUCKSHOP

Tuckshop will be open each Friday in term 4 (unless otherwise advised). All ordering will be via Qkr! which will be made available approximately one week before. All orders need to be placed by 6pm the Thursday prior so our volunteers have time to shop. The menu can be viewed on the tuckshop noticeboard and on Skoolbag. Each week there is a different special for $5 and additional snacks and drinks can be ordered too.

If you have a little time on Friday morning to give Sarah a hand, she would be very grateful. Just 20 minutes to chop some fruit, or stick the labels on bags, that would be a huge help. Running the tuckshop is not a job for just one volunteer!  pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

Uniform Shop

As mentioned in previous newsletters and correspondence, uniforms are now available from The School Locker in Maroochydore.

Ordering is online or in-store, it’s so simple and convenient. Plus, by setting up your free Student Advantage Membership online, you will access special members pricing where applicable.

If you don’t have this information, look at the school website for details.

If you are uncertain of the size you require, one of each size of polo shirt and dress will be available in school to try on. Appointments need to be made in advance, please email janie.bssuniformshop@gmail.com to arrange an appointment.

The P&C have second-hand uniforms available for sale at drastically reduced prices depending on the condition. Contact Janie at the above email address if you would like to have a look at what’s available.

If you have uniforms that are too small, or if your child is leaving school, please drop in your uniforms to the school office as we will happily re-sell to another family who can use them.

With limited volunteers and fundraising opportunities, this is one avenue that will help all families, and the P&C Association.

QKR

Did you know that Qkr! Can be accessed from any web browser? If you prefer to use a computer or tablet or unable to download the app, simply go to https://qkr-store.qkrschool.com/store/#/home and set up your Qkr! account to access school payments, uniform shop, and tuckshop ordering.

We provide an environment in which children feel safe and have fun. Afternoon tea is included.

We are located in D Block which is next to the Senior oval. The car park will be open in the morning 6:30 to 7:30 and afternoon 5:00 to 6:00. Outside of these times, you will need to use the normal school carpark located on Old Gympie Rd. Children must be supervised at all times by an adult.

If you have any questions please phone Helping Hands Co-ordinator Sharon on: 0448 083 043, or click on the link below.

Strategies to support anxious children

Given the ongoing COVID issues/ implications and other stressors on families, it seems timely to share this helpful website from Beyond Blue: https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/age-6-12/mental-health-conditions-in-children/anxiety/strategies-to-support-anxious-children

The 10 practical ideas are aimed at children aged 6 to 12 years. Please consider the 9th strategy which involves an interactive, online program for the prevention and treatment of childhood and adolescent anxiety. This free program which was developed at the University of Queensland, has programs for a range of ages and parents: https://brave4you.psy.uq.edu.au/
