Principal’s Report

Mrs Chant

This term we warmly welcome Miss Sam Stepanoff as a permanent addition to our teaching staff. Miss Stepanoff is teaching Year 3A for the remainder of the year. Last week we also welcomed back Mrs Jess Martin from maternity leave. Mrs Martin will be teaching 3C alongside Mr Henry Pellinkoff for the remainder of the year while Ms Neika Cooper goes on maternity leave. Mrs Maree Brown, our Guidance Officer, will be on leave from Tuesday 15th August and Ms Shelley Smith will be replacing her for the year. Mr Ben Costello, Ms Sarah Smith, Ms Charmaine Jeffrey and Mrs Tanya Conway continue in their acting leadership positions for the remainder of the year.

This term we also welcome Ms Claire Pennell, our school-based psychologist, who will be working at our school on Wednesday and Thursday each week. Referrals to our school-based psychologist go through our weekly Triple S process. Our psychologist focuses on mild and moderate mental health student support and is not able to work with students unless she has the explicit permission of parents via a face-to-face commencement meeting. Your classroom teacher will explain why they think a psychologist referral would benefit your child and seek approval from you in order to submit the referral via Triple S. Please note, not all students referred will be eligible to access the school-based psychologist.  Students who are accessing private psychology support are strongly encouraged to continue to do so.

Our Chappy Colour Fun Run is our major fundraiser for Chappy Jade each year. All proceeds from this fundraiser go directly to Chappy Jade’s wages and programs so that she can continue her great work 3 days a week at our school.

Our Colour Fun Run will be held on Friday 11th August with a run sheet released to families closer to the date. We warmly welcome parents to watch our students, however, parents and community members are not permitted on the running track. As you can imagine, the Colour Fun Run is a very busy event so we ask families to watch from the seating area so our staff can maintain supervision. If you would like to arrange an early departure on the day, please sign your child out via the front office before taking your child home. Also, we are not permitted to release students into the care of other adults unless we have the explicit permission from the parents.

Students are able to opt out of the Colour Fun Run and will be re-assigned to another class for the duration of the run. Students are also very welcome to wear a school supplied face mask, particularly if they suffer from asthma. Please let your teacher know if you would like to arrange this. We also ask that hair below the shoulders is tied up for this event to maintain safety.

On Wednesday 13th September we will be holding our Prep – Year 2 Athletics Carnival from 1:30 on the oval. This carnival is full of fun, rotational activities where students can earn points for their sporting house. Parents are very welcome to join us.

Our school has developed a proud partnership with Beaudesert IGA who will be supporting upcoming school events. The local business will be supporting our school via the Community Chest initiative, whereby proceeds from in store sales will be donated to our school. Our first donation will be used to support the J Block Prep toilet upgrade scheduled for this year. Thank you IGA for supporting our school community.

Our school is very excited to let you know that our main amenity (toilet) block will be upgraded in Term 4 to accommodate additional accessibility for students with a disability. Works are expected to commence Term 4 with full completion for the commencement of the 2024 school year. Student access to this block will continue with an alternative entry point.

On Thursday 7th and Friday 8th September, identified students will be representing our school in the local NRL and Netball Kingfisher Cup in Jimboomba.  Mr Ed Brimelow will be leading the NRL team with the assistance of Mrs Kim Foster and Mrs Nat Ford will be leading the Netball team with the assistance of Ms Katherine Iselin. In order to participate, students must meet attendance and behaviour criteria that was communicated at the beginning of the year. Your classroom teachers will be able to let you know if your child is eligible to attend. This activity is additional to our usual HPE program and is designed as a reward for positive behaviour and commitment to school attendance. Trials are being run by the coordinating teachers who will advise of training once teams have been confirmed.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Year 5 Gold Rush excursion is scheduled for Friday 8th September. We encourage students in Year 5 to attend Gold Rush because it is curriculum based and aligns to their current units of work. They will have another opportunity in Year 6 to participate in the Kingfisher Cup.

Our families are strongly encouraged to apply for the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) via the Australian Government.

To boost educational opportunities and narrow the digital divide, families without home internet are encouraged to apply for the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI). Access to internet at home can support children to build their digital skills and participate in a world that is more reliant on digital technology.

The Australian Government is supporting the National Broadband Network (NBN) to implement the SSBI to provide free home internet for one year for up to 30,000 unconnected families across Australia with school aged students.

To be eligible for SSBI, a family must:

  • Have a child living at home that is enrolled in a Queensland state school in 2023.
  • Not have an active internet service at home. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.
  • Be referred by a nominating organisation such as the Department of Education (the department).
  • Agree their child has access to a device and has the digital skills to use the internet safely or will be supervised.
  • Live in a premises that can access the NBN via a standard connection – this will be checked by NBN.

Referral through the department

The department is pleased to support the nomination of families for the SSBI. If you would like to apply for the SSBI please contact the Beaudesert State School front office staff for an application (online or paper form). Applications must be submitted by 1 September 2023.

Please note: our school strongly supports all families to apply, however, have no impact on the decision making and family eligibility.

True Relationships and Sexuality lessons will commence at the end of this term in Years 3-6. This is an important component of our HPE program. Our HOSE, Nicole Inder, is coordinating this program in our school. Please contact her if you require additional information.

Our P&C are proud to support our Arts curriculum and have financially supported the Performance ‘Life is an echo’ for all students making it free to families. Thank you to our P&C for your ongoing support.

Our school is closed on Monday 14th August for the Show Holiday and Friday 1st September for the Pupil Free Day.

Deputy Principal Update

Miss Gauld

Book Week Parade

Book Week parade will be held on Thursday 24th August.  The them this year is “Read, Grow, Inspire”.  Students are encouraged to dress up and parents are welcome to come to the parade. We will have a march past on the oval with students heading to the hall for judging and prizes.

Attendance

There has been a lot of illness of late but absences have been an on-going problem for the majority of this year with a lot of them being unexplained. Parents need to contact the office or class teacher if their child is going to be absent. When students are not attending school they are not learning.  This will be reflected in their report cards.  Children are required, by law, to attend school. If your child is not attending school on a regular basis this will have a huge impact on their future.

Junior School Classroom Reports

Prep

What a great start we’ve had to Term 3! We are all very busy learning about rhyme in English, days of the week and mass in Maths. We are also enjoying learning about the needs of living things in Science and special places in HASS. It has been so great to see so many Preps returning their homework folder each Friday and excited to learn their Tricky words. Week 5, they will embark on their reading journey, borrowing decodable texts that will also come home in homework folders (more information to come).

We have some exciting days coming up. Colour run is lots of fun and it is so great to see so many Preppies fundraising for our beautiful Chaplain Jade Cocks. Next, will be the Book Week Parade! Students can dress up as their favourite book character. To finish the term off, we will enjoy participating in the Junior Sports afternoon.

Looking forward to another great term in Prep.

Your Prep Teachers 😊

Year 1

Term 3 has begun with some fun learning in English, using the Pig the Pug book series. Students are excited to create their own dog character to add to the books and then participate in an interview to learn about each other's characters. In Maths, we have been learning about the Australian coins and their value. We are also looking at how to tell the time to the half hour, and we have made our own analogue clocks to help with our learning.

In Art, 1A have created sunset pictures using chalk pastels and the students choose an Australian animal to feature on their artwork.

In week 3, Year 1 went on an incursion into outer space. Starlab came to our school with an inflatable planetarium, and we learnt about the sun, stars, planets and the seasons. This was very interesting and fun for all of Year 1.

1/2C

This term in English 1/2C will be deepening their understanding of Narrative texts by exploring the characters in the stories we read.  Students will be exploring traditional characters and how they are also presented in alternative stories.  So far this term we have explored how Cinderella is portrayed in the traditional story and how her character traits are different in the story Cinders Rox.  Students will be working towards presenting a character description on a preferred character this term and giving reasons for their preference.

In Math students have had a lot of fun learning about money.  Year 1 have been learning the value of coins, what they look like and also ordering them according to their value.  Year 2 have been learning how to add small collections of coins and notes together.  We have had fun making shops to buy different items in the classroom.  This term students will also be learning about time on clocks and duration of time such as hour, day and continuing our daily use of calendars.

This term also has a few extra activities planned for students.  Year 1 have just had a great time at their Starlab Incursion last week.  Year 2 will shortly get to participate in their Wild Rangers Incursion and then an excursion to the Ipswich Railway Museum later in the term, which they are very excited about.

Year 2

This is another busy term for our grade and includes two exciting events – an excursion to the Ipswich Railway Museum and a visit from Wild Rangers.

Our HASS unit in Terms 3 & 4 focuses on comparing modern world technologies with technology of the past. It culminates in our excursion to the Ipswich Railway Museum on September the 6th, where students will view real life examples of historical technology.

The other exciting event in our calendar is the visit from Wild Rangers on August 10th. During this visit students will get to view and handle a wide range of animals. They will be taught different facts about each animal, which links perfectly with our English unit on informative texts. Students will be writing an information report on a chosen animal and presenting it to an audience. This has always been a favourite unit with past students and we are excited to get into it.

Our Science unit looks at lifecycles. Students will study how animals and plants change as they grow. They will compare the changes experienced by different types of animals during their lifecycle.

The focus of Maths this term will be learning beginning multiplication skills, telling time to the quarter and half hour and the value of Australian coins.

I hope you enjoy viewing the classroom photos 😊

MESSAGES FROM HOME

If parents find it necessary to alter their child’s routine, please notify the class teacher of the change and ensure that the child knows exactly what is required.

If contacting the office to notify your child of a change, you must do so by 12.00pm at the latest so that messages can be passed on to both the teacher and the child concerned. Once the children have been dismissed it is difficult to ensure the message will be received by the child in time. N.B. WE ARE UNABLE TO GUARANTEE THAT MESSAGES RECEIVED AFTER 12.00PM WILL BE PASSED ON TO STUDENTS.

No Smoking

Smoking is banned at all Queensland state and non-state schools (school facilities), and for 5 metres beyond their boundaries. The law applies at all times - during and after school hours, on weekends and during school holidays. It includes the use of all smoking products, including electronic cigarettes.

Lost Property

As always, we have a mountain of lost property piling up at school. A lot of it is unnamed which makes it extremely hard to get it returned to the rightful owner. If your student has lost any items direct them to the lost property bins which are located under A Block Administration Building, or you're welcome to pop in for a look yourselves. Please check there if your children are missing any of their belongings.

PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL BELONGINGS ARE CLEARLY LABELLED!

Chappy Corner

Colour run is here!!! Next Friday, 11th August, we have our annual Chappy Colour Run. Please make sure your permission forms have been returned so that your children can enjoy participating on the day. Can I say a massive thank you to all those who have been fundraising. It is really easy to do and makes such a difference. Every little bit helps, so if you have not signed up yet, can I encourage you to jump online at www.schoolfunrun.com.au and share your fundraising link with family and friends. Our current funding covers only a day and a half of chaplaincy, meaning that we need to fundraise to cover the shortfall if we want to continue our three-day service. I am so thankful that at the moment I am here 3 days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday), running numerous group programs (Bella Girls, All Stars Friendship, HOPE Cooking), lunch time activities (Lego Club, Games in the Chappy Room and Staff vs Students competitions), whole school initiatives such as our Kindness Challenge, as well as one on one support for our school community. Please support me to support you and raise the funds we need to keep our chaplaincy service running for three days a week. Thank you 😊

Speaking staff vs students…. Our last challenge was a game of touch footy and I am pleased to say, the staff were again victorious! Our staff vs students challenges are always so much fun with many students coming along to either play or cheer. Our next challenge will be netball in week 6.

Our Kindness Challenge is always a highlight of our week and so far this term we have enjoyed writing a card to thank someone for helping us, complimenting our cooks for our dinner, telling our friends why they are special to us and thanking Mrs Chant and Miss Gauld. I truly love hearing students sharing with me how they are being kind. Being kind is something we all can do and it makes such a difference in the lives of everyone.

This term we are also opening up our HOPE cooking group to Year 5’s. We have been able to provide a couple of families with some food and we are looking forward to cooking quiche, muffins, cheeseburger sausage rolls and choc chip biscuits in the coming week. Keep an eye out at the Beauy Show for some of our choc chip biscuits and Anzac biscuits!

Don’t forget, the chappy room is open for parents to feel free to drop in for a coffee and a Tim Tam on Wednesday mornings.

Again, thank you to all those who are fundraising for the colour run. I so appreciate you!

Please let me know if I can help you in any way. I hope you have a great week.

😊 Chappy Jade

The application can also be found on our school website under Support and Resources / Forms and Documents.

Digital Technologies

This semester through engaging and age-appropriate activities, our students are learning essential digital skills that will serve as building blocks for their future success.

For our Preps, their introduction to Digital Technologies starts with the user-friendly and interactive platform called Seesaw. Embracing technology in their learning journey, our young students are exploring all of the features and tools that Seesaw has to offer.

Moving forward to Year 1 and 2, our students are introduced to the exciting world of coding through the adorable Beebots. These colourful, bee-shaped robots become their learning companions as they embark on a journey of logical thinking and problem-solving. Through hands-on activities, children learn to program Beebots to move, turn, and complete various tasks, enhancing their understanding of sequences and commands.

STEM Team News

Bright and early on a Thursday morning the Beaudesert STEM kids went on an educational adventure to UQ university. At UQ we learnt about stem cells and the Gilmore space station before we stopped for a delicious packed lunch and a relaxing break from getting our brains stuffed with knowledge.

Every student stood shocked as we were fascinated to watch a professional cyclist power a toaster as well as disgusted but intrigued to watch many microscopic pictures of an ant.

One of our favourite parts was looking at the bus sized satellite and watching Rosie, the rocket scientist, interpret the stages of Eris, the 3 staged rocket. Stages are different segments of Eris. Stage 1 has four engines, stage 2 has one engine, stage 3 is the final stage of Eris which lets payload (satellites) go after getting into space. It can blow up but it won’t at Gilmore because of their high-tech solid fuel. When testing the rockets, they want the flame to look like a blow torch and stay consistent while testing. Not a singular human being has been able to pull this off for more than 15 minutes yet. Broken satellites may cause blackouts. They can be fixed, depending on the damage it could take a longer amount of time if serious.

Miah-Ann, Jemma, Mason

The Arts

This term in Performing Arts the years 1-3 are exploring the story "Where the Wild Things Are" to learn about their wild and calm emotions. Learning to express those emotions through dance, music and drama, and learning about strategies to calm themselves when they feel wild. This week students created wild soundscapes with their bodies, vocies and musical instruments.

In prep this term we are using our imaginations and building our creativity. We are using our listening ears and putting on our thinking caps as we travel to "Mountain Goat Mountain" (in our imaginations!). Along the way learning how to work as a team, sharing our ideas and solving problems all through dance, drama and music.
