Drummoyne Public School

Term 3 Week 4 Newsletter - Friday 15 August 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Drummoyne Conquers All at Inner West PSSA Zone Athletics Carnival

I’m very proud to report that Drummoyne PS came away from Thursday’s Inner West PSSA Zone Athletics Carnival with champions and shields galore. Both Maeve and James were 11y/o age champions, Jake was the 12y/o boys champion, our team took out the overall boys championship and we won the overall school championship - go Drummoyne!

Thank you to Mr Roche, Ms Pegler and Ms Page who braved the rain and arrived at 7am last Thursday to take our students to the carnival and to Ms Xenos and Ms Davis for their organisation.

Celebrating Science Week

We celebrated Science Week this week and it was wonderful to see so many engaging, hands-on activities taking place across the school. Thank you to our teachers for all their efforts in making the week such a success. A special mention goes to Mr Sutton for his entertaining (and explosive!) K-2 Science show at recess on Wednesday. We were also fortunate to have SSC Balmain visit to literally set things alight as part their science show for our Stage 2 students. It was lovely to see some familiar faces, with former Drummoyne students returning to help put on the show!

Next Thursday = TOMOBOLA TIME!

Next Thursday will be our next fete mufti day (instead of Friday due to the PSSA Gala Day). Students can come to school in casual clothes and, in return, we’ll begin collecting tombola jars for the fete. These can be filled with all sorts of goodies - chocolates, lollies, small toys or other surprises. I’m looking forward to seeing my office start to fill up with colourful jars and tasty treats over the coming weeks as we get closer to the big day!

Reminder: South Street Playground Construction Work & Gate Closure

A reminder that the South Street gate will be closed for a couple of weeks while the South Street basketball court is being upgraded. During this time, access to the school will be through the Rawson Avenue and Thompson Street gates only. The construction fencing is scheduled to be installed on Sunday.

Book Week Next Week

Book Week is coming up next week, and we’re excited to celebrate with a week full of fun activities and reading! The highlight will be our costume parade on Monday and I can’t wait to see all the creative outfits the students and staff will come dressed in. You are, of course, invited to join us from 2:30pm to watch the parade and share in the celebration of our love of books and reading. It promises to be a fantastic way to kick off Book Week!

Regards,

John Nguyen

THIS WEEK AT DPS

K-2 Mad Science Day

K-2 loved our mad science day so much we made a recount! We hope you enjoy reading all about it!

Shaving cream clouds experiment:

We got into groups of two and three, Ms Jane gave us a plastic cups to share between our groups. First she told us to fill the cup half way, then she went around and put shaving cream in our cups. Then one person in our group put blue dye in the plastic cup then at the bottom the water started turning blue.

Paper Helicopter experiment:

Mrs Buchanan gave us a purple or green piece of paper. We needed scissors to cut the paper. After we finished cutting and folding the paper we made a line so Mrs Buchanan could put a paper clip on the bottom and wrote our name and class. Then she said we can now fly our helicopter and it was so much fun!

Lemon volcanoes experiment:

The lemon volcano was very fun. We needed bicarb soda lemons and food coloring. It was my second favorite experiment.

Dancing Popcorn experiment:

This was my favorite experiment. We needed popcorn kernels, bicarb soda vinegar and  popcorn seeds.

Grand Finale:

Mr Sutton did rocket-ship experiments. I thought it was a cool experience to see how far it could go. It was fun to see it go higher and higher each time we tried. One thing I didn’t like about it, was that some people didn’t get a chance to actually do the experiment. It was a good experience.

There were also other experiments such as baking soda and vinegar balloons, balloon static relays, bubble snakes, the great chain race, straw and tape towers. Check out the photos below!

Thank you for reading!

Juliette, Jarah and Kieran of 1/2J.

Stage 2 Science incursion from Sydney Secondary College (Balmain).

Science week in Stage 3

To compliment Stage 3's science unit, 5/6C joined an interactive online learning session to celebrate Science Week. They learnt about the features, habitat and behaviours of some truly peculiar Australian animals!

Author Stephanie Owen Reeder and illustrator Ingrid Bartkowiak read from their book, Perculiar Parents, and drew a picture of one of a cockatoo, directing students as she went.

Ecologists from Wildbark at Mulligans Flat introduced us to a native mouse and it's special adaptations.

Stage 3 also conducted an experiment testing the transpiration of a succulent versus a leafy plant. This helps with the understanding that desert plants adapt to the harsh desert environment by storing water.

Parade! You’re all invited!

Students are invited to come dressed as something book related! It could be a favourite book character, a favourite book cover, a definition from the dictionary, their favourite world record from Guinness or in the “Book an Adventure” theme. Family and carers are invited to come and watch the parade. The parade will take this Monday 18th August at 2:30 p.m.

Author visit!

Also on Monday 18th August, students from Kindergarten to Stage 2 will listen to a presentation from amazing author and illustrator, Serena Geddes.

Premier’s Reading challenge – the clock is ticking!

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is currently on but time is running out! Students must have their reading logs completed by 29th August.

Students in years 3 to 6 must log their own reading on the PRC website.

The easiest way for students to log their reading is by going to their student portal and clicking on the Premier’s Reading Challenge icon.

Kindy to year 2 students will have their reading logs updated by Mr Neufeld.

CAPA

Assembly Star

This week's Assembly Star is Alex O from 5/6H. Alex confidently played a piece he arranged himself, combining the electronic music hit "Life Force" with a classical piece "La Campanella" by Franz Liszt.

These songs were composed around 170 years apart, but he brought these two pieces together beautifully. The most impressive part of his performance was a secret Alex had been keeping. Alex doesn’t take piano lessons, but he taught himself these songs during the school holidays using YouTube.

Bravo Alex!

Suzy Sole

CAPA Teacher

If you would like to secure one of these times for your child, please contact Ms Sole - suzanne.sole@det.nsw.edu.au

    OFFICE NEWS

    Absence Notifications

Regular school attendance is important for your child’s learning and social development. If your child is absent from school, you must ensure that you provide the school with a written explanation.

How to submit an absence notification

From Term 3 2025, our school will begin using the School Bytes Parent Portal to help manage student absences. You can submit your child’s absence through the School Bytes Parent App or by email. We are no longer using Audiri.

The School Bytes Parent Portal allows parents to view all their children in one portal and enables parents to provide details of a planned absence, if the absence details are known in advance - for example; to report an illness or a scheduled medical appointment.

Parents can also provide a response for any unexplained student absences that have been recorded by the school.

    Late arrival or early departure

Partial absences cannot be submitted on the School Bytes Parent App.  Parents must come to the office and sign their child/ren in or out of school.

    Extended leave

Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, you can only submit up to 9 days leave on the School Bytes Parent App.

If travelling for 10 days or more, you will need to complete an Application for Extended Leave Form. You can download this from the school website and return to the school by email or in person to the front office along with your travel itinerary or flight details.
