Drummoyne Public School

Term 4 Week 4 Newsletter - Friday 8 November 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Student Leadership Positions 2025

I’m pleased to share the results of, and some thoughts on, our prefect and house captain speeches and elections this week. It was inspiring to see so many of our students step up and put themselves forward for these roles, delivering mature and thoughtful speeches. Their courage, commitment and sense of responsibility shone through and it was evident how much each student valued the opportunity to serve their peers and school community.

What made the experience even more memorable was the way Year 5 students supported each other when the successful candidates were announced. It was a moment of genuine camaraderie and respect, reflecting the strong values we encourage at Drummoyne Public School.

In speaking to all our Year 5 candidates, I encouraged them to continue leading in their own unique ways, regardless of whether they wear a badge or hold a formal title. Leadership is about making a positive impact and there will be numerous other opportunities next year for them to demonstrate these qualities. I look forward to seeing each of them continue to grow, contribute and make a difference as they step into Year 6.

Kindergarten 2025 Orientation Morning

It was a pleasure to welcome our 2025 Kindergarten students and their families for the first of three orientation mornings on Thursday. The excitement and warmth shared by everyone highlighted the importance of belonging and community here at Drummoyne Public School. These early days are about more than just introductions - they’re the beginning of building a strong, supportive environment where each child and family feels a true sense of belonging. We look forward to fostering these connections in the upcoming sessions, ensuring that every child feels at home and embraced by our school community as they prepare for an exciting year in Kindergarten.

P&C Disco TONIGHT!

Speaking of community, I’m excited to attend my first Drummoyne Public School disco this evening and I look forward to seeing many of you there. It’s always wonderful to be part of these school events and share in the fun with our students and families.

Regards,

John Nguyen

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

It takes many years for your child to develop an understanding of danger and how to keep safe

While children are often keen to do things for themselves, an adult must always be responsible for them in the road environment. Please take the time to speak with your child/ren about the importance of road safety. They don't always take the time to think before they act. eg. when a ball may go on the road and they run to fetch it.

Request for documents

If during the year, families receive documents such as Court Orders, reports from health care professionals and the like, please provide a copy to the office so that we can stay up to date with any changes to your child’s circumstances.

Dianne Colb

Deputy Principal

Class of the Week - 3/4A

The students in 3/4A have been reading 'Our Dreaming,' a story about an echidna who tells stories about the Dreamtime and creation.

They were inspired to create their own artworks of Australian animals and birds using watercolours.

PBL AWARDS

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been at DPS.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring them to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

2025 Prefect Elections

Year 5 students have been participating in a Leadership program as part of the Personal Development and Health curriculum. They have engaged in structured activities, highlighting the qualities required to be a successful leader in Year 6.

This week, 18 Student Prefect nominees spoke to students in Years 3, 4 and 5 at a special assembly as to why they would make excellent prefects in 2025. Students and teachers then voted via secret ballot online for four boys and four girls.

Well done to all our nominees and congratulations to the following students who will be our Student Prefects for 2025: Elizabeth Windmiller, Maeve O'Brien, Ella Cleave, Delilah Fletcher, Oliver Bernia, Hamilton Brierty, Jake Luciano & Isaac Navendra.

The selection process continues next week for the rest of the leadership positions and leaders will be presented with their badges at the induction assembly on Tuesday 26 November.

The 2025 test dates are from 2 to 4 May 2025. Students will need to attend one test date only.

You can read more about the changes here

The application link will be available here

Students can visit Selective high schools and opportunity classes – information for students to access resources and to gain an understanding of the placement process, including practice tests.

The attached guide also has important information and dates included, as well as contact information should you have any questions.

Nude Food Tuesdays

This term the SRC are holding Nude Food Tuesdays. Please send your children to school on Tuesdays with food that is not wrapped or packaged.

So what is Nude food?

Nude food is food that is not wrapped or packaged in any form of plastic or foil including cling wrap, foil, polymer, aluminium etc. These wraps are used for packaging chips and other snack foods and can also be used to wrap lunch box items such as sandwiches.

The diagram above shows some of the results from the 'Food and Waste Lunchbox' data for our school which was collected last term. We were shocked to see that 61.8 litres of waste per day ends up in landfill.

So why Nude Food?

In an effort to reduce the amount of landfill the Environmental Leaders, with the support of the SRC, would like to re-ignite Nude Food each Tuesday until Week 9.

SRC class reps will be checking in with their classmates at eating time and the start of recess to record who has brought food that is not in packaging (something they have to throw out).

Please support your child(ren) to bring a Nude lunch and recess tomorrow. This will go a long way to help reduce the landfill waste at DPS.

Many thanks,

Joanna, Phillipa and Phoebe S

ALL THINGS SPORTY

Cricket Big Bash at Drummoyne Oval following the Stage 3 Gala Day on Tuesday 12th November.

Stage 3 have been given the opportunity to improve their cricket skills and participate in a Gala Day run by Cricket NSW - coordinated by Aaron Hadley, the brother of one of our kindergarten students Milla.

They have also offered Drummoyne PS a unique opportunity to have a 'VIP' area under our school marquee for the evening match between Sydney Thunder and Perth Scorchers.

As well as a fun day down at the park, two lucky students will be chosen to do the bat toss at the start of the match. How exciting!!

Get down to Drummoyne Oval and throw your support behind the Thunder and let's aim to fill up the DPS area next Tuesday 12th November.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
