Beaudesert State School Newsletter

Principal’s Report

Mrs Chant

Welcome to the first newsletter of Term 2. I trust this edition finds you all safe and well.

Late last term we farewelled Chappy Jade and wished her all the very best in her new role. We are now seeking a new Chaplain to work alongside our school. Chaplain training and accreditation can take 6 months with opportunities to extend study to 12 months. If you are interested, please contact Jade Cocks at jade.cocks@su.org.au.

The successful applicant will be employed by Scripture Union which is a Christian organisation. Ideally, we are looking for someone 3 days a week, however, these days can be negotiated for the right applicant.

Prep & Year 1 Healthy Mouth Day

Next week Prep and Year 1 students will complete Healthy Mouth Day, an oral health session with QLD Health dental nurses. Students received permission forms earlier this term. Please contact your teacher if you need another. This free session will teach oral health to all students then students with permission will participate in the oral health screener with the dental nurses. The class teachers are not provided with student information after the screener so please contact the office you would like more information after this program.

Parking

Parking at the front of the school remains an ongoing concern where our community are parking in the 3 designated ‘stop, drop and go’ zones. Please be aware that cars parked illegally in this area could face fines by QLD Police.

Contacting Teachers

Our teachers are here to work alongside you and encourage you to make an appointment to see them. It is often difficult for our staff to give you the necessary time to discuss concerns or receive messages about your child at the beginning of the school day as they prepare lessons and meet with their teaching teams. The best way to get a message to your teacher before school is to advise the front office staff who will ensure the message is passed on to the teacher. Afternoon meetings are available for parents and these are organised with the class teacher. As a school, we will not communicate with parents that are swearing at us or swearing in the conversation. I expect Beaudesert staff to speak to our families and students in a respectful manner and parents are expected to do the same. Thank you for your support with this.

Prep Playground Upgrade

Our new Prep playground is well underway with construction expected to be completed by 23rd July. The contractors will continue to need access through the 2 car parks in front of the Prep school gate on Tina Street so you may access to this space limited. We will also have construction underway in the back multi-purpose court commencing 13th May but there should be minimal impact to our school and parent parking. Over the school holidays, F Block next to Ecole Street will be removed. The removal of the asbestos in this building will occur in the weekends prior to the holidays. There must be no school access over this period. We have also secured funding to upgrade the main amenity block with new paint and flooring in the coming months, which we are very excited about.

Ms Gauld on leave

Next week, our Deputy Principal, Ms Nikki Gauld, will be on leave for 2 weeks, Mrs Melissa Ainsworth has been successful in gaining the acting DP role and will be filling in for her whilst she is away.

Winter Uniforms

Our free uniform initiative has proven to be very popular over the week and I thank you for coming to take what would be useful for your family. We still have a variety of sizes and styles at the front office on the veranda so if you can’t find what you are looking for, please ask the front office team and they will have a look for you.

We expect all Beaudesert students to wear the full school uniform each day. This includes a school hat and jumpers. The school hat is a plain maroon wide brimmed hat. Jewellery is only permitted when it is a watch and one set of earrings that are stud or sleeper designs. All chains, necklaces and bracelets are not permitted as these pose a Workplace Health and Safety risk for your child. I ask that our families are responsible to ensure additional jewellery does not come to school. We also ask that all students with hair below their shoulders have it tied up neatly.

Lost Property

Lost property continues to be a concern around the school. We have so many items with no name which are then cleaned and offered as free uniforms for families. All school items should be clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Deputy Principal Update

Miss Gauld

ANZAC Day Ceremony

On the 22nd April we held our school ANZAC Day Ceremony.  All children showed the utmost respect during the ceremony and should be congratulated for this.  Well done to Patrick, Paige, Fern and Ava who spoke incredibly well on the day.

Thank you to all the students who marched on ANZAC Day with the school. It was great to see the students there marching with pride as they represented the school.

Thank you to our school captains and vice captains who attended the dawn service on ANZAC Day.

Attendance

We started the year off very well with attendance but unfortunately it has started to drop off.  I understand that some students have been absent due to illness but some students are absent due to birthdays or having a shopping day, these reasons are not acceptable.

The class with the highest attendance will be having a pizza party at the end of the term. The top 10 classes are displayed in a graph every Monday on parade. Please see below for the graph to date:

Leave

I will be on long service leave from 13/05-24/05. Mrs Ainsworth will be taking great care of the Deputy Principal role whilst I'm away. I look forward to seeing you all when I return from my holiday.

Classroom Reports

Prep

The Preps have had an eventful and productive start to the year, full to the brim with learning in their literacy groups, maths groups and during negotiated activity times. The students have been responsive to the Jolly Phonics program this year and we’re pleased to report that they are learning a lot of letters and sounds through songs and actions. This will undoubtedly help the Preps take their first big step into the world of reading and writing.

In term 1 our Science was all about the weather, and wow, we were able to observe a wide variety of weather. This term we are learning about materials and their properties. We are looking forward to making our wind ornament at the end of the term.

Please remember to check the Audiri App to keep up to date with upcoming events. For example - Under 8’s Day and Healthy Mouth Day.

Check out the photo gallery below to see all the fun we've been having.

Year 1

The students have settled very quickly into Term 2 and have jumped right into learning. In English, students have been exploring narrative texts. Students have enjoyed reading a range of stories and learning how to retell these stories, as well as make a text to self connection. In Maths, students have been investigating the features of 2D and 3D shapes and will be exploring length and capacity using informal measurement. Science investigations, this term, are looking at habitats and how different habitats meet the needs of living things.

On Wednesday, Year 1 students had a very exciting visit from Wild Rangers. The students enjoyed learning about some of Australia’s native animals and their habitats, as well as sharing some of their own knowledge about how these habitats support the needs of the living things. Finally, the students were very excited to pat or hold the animals under the supervision of the Wild Rangers expert. Please enjoy some of the photos below.

Year 2

Term 2 is once again proving to be a busy term in Year 2.  Our wonderful Under 8’s day is fast approaching on the 23rd May at 9:00am.  Students will enjoy a variety of activities connected to Culture Through Play.

English Students will be learning about narrative recounts. We will explore writing features used for creating story recounts, including structure, simple and compound sentences, extended noun groups and spelling concepts. Students will write their recounts and produce their good copy using SeeSaw. They will listen to and read a variety of familiar stories, compare story features and state their preference. Maths Students will be learning to represent numbers to 1000, use addition strategies for double digit problems, identify and describe 2D and 3D shapes and investigate measurement. Science Students will be learning about materials. Students are learning to pose questions, make predictions, conduct experiments and record observations. The unit finishes with an assessment where students create an object combining two materials to suit the purpose. HASS Students will continue learning about how people are connected to different places and why those places are significant. We will explore the world map by looking at the different continents and map features. Visual Arts Students will be experimenting with colour, shape and line to create different artworks. They will explore how each element creates emotion and visual effects. They will create a portfolio of work using mixed media.

Please enjoy viewing some photos of our year 2’s at work!

Lost Property

As always, we have a mountain of lost property piling up at school. A lot of it is unnamed which makes it extremely hard to get it returned to the rightful owner. If your student has lost any items direct them to the lost property bins which are located under A Block Administration Building, or you're welcome to pop in for a look yourselves. Please check there if your children are missing any of their belongings.

Cross Country

At the end of the last term, we had our Year 3-6 Cross Country. The students ran very well - especially on a wet and rainy day! However, it was Wilson House who came home with the victory! Congratulations! Furthermore, I would like to congratulate Paige, Stanley, Janicx, Bayley, Sophie, Kane, Melody, and Taylor, who were our Age Champions!

A massive congratulations to Paige, Janicx and Bayley who made it passed Beaudesert Zones trials and participated in the Pacific District Cross Country Trials, with Bayley being successful. Well done, mate! And good luck in the next stage!

Rugby League Success

In other sport, we had Daley and Flynn make the Pacific District Rugby League Team! The boys played in a two-day carnival in Burleigh. Both boys played extremely well and should be very proud of their efforts! We all are.

Soccer Superstars

Congratulations to Hollie who made the Pacific District Soccer team. Hollie trials for South Coast in the coming weeks. We wish her all the best! We know you will do yourself and the school proud.

And finally, we had Patrick and Jeffrey make the Beaudesert Zone Soccer Team. The boys showed plenty of Beauy Spirit and played very well. Awesome work boys! Once again, you should be very proud of your efforts.

The Arts

Performing Arts

This term in the performing arts year 1 and 2 will be working with Miss Stacey to learn about our Mununjali totems. They will also be learning about how to use their bodies, faces and voices when creating their own stories featuring our local animals.

In prep students are learning about creating and sharing stories using sounds. We have explored loud and quiet and fast and slow sounds. Using the story “Don’t Wake the Dingo” students have been creating storm sounds with instruments to bring the story to life.

Design Technology

Our Preps have embarked on a journey into the world of storytelling by crafting stick puppets to accompany the tale of "The Three Billy Goats Gruff." In this engaging project, students have sketched out plans for their troll puppets and selected elements to adorn them. From shaggy wool to pipe cleaner horns, each detail is chosen to capture the character.

Following their plans, they're assembling their stick puppets piece by piece. Soon, they'll have the opportunity to retell the timeless story, using their handmade puppets as the stars of the show!

Meanwhile, our Year 1 and 2 students are enjoying a culinary adventure.  Through hands-on exploration, they've been investigating kitchen tools and equipment, evaluating their effectiveness for various tasks, and looking at how they can keep them safe.

Our budding chefs are now gearing up for the next phase of their journey: planning and preparing healthy snacks using technology. They will then reflect on their creations, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
