Holbrook Public School

Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 11: Term 3, Week 1 - Wednesday, 19 July 2023

From the Principal's desk

Welcome back to Term 3! We hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable break, and we are thrilled to commence another term of learning and discovery together. As we settle back into the routine, we have some exciting news and important updates to share.

NAIDOC Week

Firstly, we would like to acknowledge the significance of NAIDOC Week, a time to celebrate the rich culture, history, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We will be engaging in various NAIDOC Week celebrations throughout this week.

One of the highlights of our NAIDOC Week activities will be class readings of quality texts written by First Nations authors. This initiative aims to immerse our students in Indigenous authors' captivating stories, perspectives, and voices, fostering an appreciation for their literary contributions and deepening their understanding of First Nations cultures.

Additionally, Greater Hume Children Services will have a special visit to Holbrook Public School, building connections through a Acknowledgement to Country and the enchanting sound of tapping sticks.

NAPLAN Results

In the coming weeks, we will send out the NAPLAN results for our Year 3 and Year 5 students. These results offer valuable insights into your child's progress and achievements in key areas of literacy and numeracy. If you have any questions or concerns, we encourage you to contact the school for further clarification or support.

Staffing

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Miss Emily Owens and Mrs Amanda Freund, who will be working in release from face-to-face roles at Holbrook Public School. We look forward to their positive impact on our school community.

Education Week

Mark your calendars for Education Week, which will occur during Term 3, Week 3, from Monday, 31 July to Friday, 4 August 2023. This year, we celebrate 175 Years of Public Education, a significant milestone in our educational journey. Education Week offers a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our collective achievements and celebrate our state's transformation of public education.

Our school will buzz throughout the week with various exciting activities and events. There will be ample opportunities to engage, learn, and celebrate together. We invite you to join us on Thursday, 3 August, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for open classrooms and a shared morning tea with staff, students, and families.

Whole School Performance

Finally, we are delighted to announce that a whole school production will take place at the end of this term. This highly anticipated event will showcase our students' and staff's immense talent and creativity. It promises to be a memorable experience for the entire school community, and we cannot wait to see the incredible performances on display. There will be more information regarding the production in the upcoming weeks.

Sport

I wish Sophie B, Ollie C and Braxton M all the best when they represent Riverina in the State Cross Country Competition in Sydney on Friday.

I look forward to a busy but productive Term 3 and hope to see lots of families sharing in our upcoming events.

The attachment shows those students who will progress to compete in the Riverina Athletics Carnival, to be held on Friday, 25 August, at the Les O’Brien Precinct:

Age Champions: Congratulations to Ollie Cardile, who was awarded the Senior Boys Age Champion, and to Sophie Burey and Brydie Laffan, who were awarded joint Junior Girls Runner-up Age Champion.

Records: Congratulations to Ollie Cardile, who broke the Senior Boys 1500m record of 5.41.59 in 2019 with 5.35.92.

With fabulous results and efforts, Holbrook Public School was awarded the overall champion. A big congratulations to everyone! Awards from the day will be given out at our first assembly for the term on Tuesday, 25 July 2023.

Farewell, Mr Ross

Thank you, Hume Bank

The P&C would like to thank the HUME BANK for a very generous donation of $500 towards the running of our upcoming 'Community Outdoor Cinema Night.'

We welcome Hume Bank and their wonderful staff to Holbrook and appreciate their contribution to our outstanding school!

The P&C would also like to thank and acknowledge those fantastic parents who volunteered their time to provide the barbecue at the athletics carnival. Thank you, Tash and Jock Harbison, Jamie Ingle, Jess Melbourne, Akear Boers, Andrew Lawson and Jos Burey.

Afternoon Activities Groups

Starting this term, Holbrook Public School is running groups that allow students to practice and develop their social skills by participating in various games and activities that promote communication and connection. Over the term, students will be able to participate in various arts and crafts sessions, gardening, games and boccia.

Thanks to Mrs D, the school chaplain, and our fabulous SLSOs for running these sessions. Sessions will run on Tuesdays and Fridays for 40 minutes.

If you have any questions or concerns about these groups, please do not hesitate to contact me via phone or email.

Activity deadlines

Don't miss the deadline for providing permission or payment for Sentral activities! Once the deadline has passed, you'll lose access to that activity and must complete a hard copy note instead. Remember that it's essential to complete these tasks on time to avoid unnecessary inconvenience and ensure you have access to the necessary resources. So plan and provide permission or payment before the deadline to prevent issues.

P&C meeting - Wednesday, 9 August 2023
