Drummoyne Public School

Term 3 Week 7 Newsletter - Friday 6 September 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Deputy Principal Staffing Change for 2025

It is with mixed emotions that I announce the transfer of our Deputy Principal, Ms Dianne Colb, to Guildford Public School beginning next year. This change comes as a result of the planned decrease in student numbers at Drummoyne Public School due to boundary adjustments following Russell Lea Public School’s transition to a K-6 school.

While we understand the necessity of this change, we are deeply saddened to be losing Ms Colb, who has become an integral part of our school community over the last 8 years. Her dedication, leadership and passion for education have touched the lives of many students, staff and families.

To celebrate Ms Colb’s contributions to Drummoyne PS, we will be holding a special farewell event towards the end of the year. We hope you will join us in celebrating her time with us and wishing her all the best in her new role at Guildford PS.

Welcome to our new Italian Teacher, Lisa Cameron

I am pleased to welcome  Ms Lisa Cameron to our staff as the new Italian teacher on Wednesdays through Fridays. Ms Jess LoSurdo will be teaching Italian on Mondays.

While we are still in the process of finding a full-time Italian teacher, we are excited to have Ms Cameron with us for the remainder of this term, with the possibility of her staying on until the end of the year. Ms Cameron brings a wealth of experience to the role, having taught French at Kambala for the past four years, French at PLC prior to that, and Italian at Leichhardt Public School from 2008 to 2016. I know you will join me in welcoming Ms Cameron to our school community.

I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to Ms Carolyn Allport for stepping in and teaching Italian over the past seven weeks.

Thank you, Claudie

Remaining in a thankful mindset, I would like to take a moment to recognise and thank Claudie, our wonderful crossing guard, who celebrated 10 years in the role on Thursday. Claudie’s dedication and commitment to ensuring the safety of our students and families over the past decade has been truly remarkable and we are incredibly grateful for her continued service. Congratulations, Claudie, on this amazing milestone and thank you for your work to keep our school community safe.

Last year filmmaker and DPS parent Artur Geokhlanian created an uplifting documentary film featuring Claudie entitled "Safety & Respect". I have included the short film below for you to enjoy.

Regards,

John Nguyen

Tips to support students with food allergies

Be A M.A.T.E. and Make Allergy Treatment Easier

Having a food allergy can impact on a child’s participation in school and other activities. With support, understanding, and education of children, parents/carers, and the wider school community, everyone can include children with food allergy and help to keep them safe.

Anyone can Be a M.A.T.E. by following these five easy steps:

Always take food allergies seriously

It may be hard to believe food that most of us eat and enjoy every day can be harmful to others, but people who have food allergy can have serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), which can be life threatening.

Don’t share food with mates who have food allergy

Everyone loves to share or swap food with each other. But for those with food allergies this can be very dangerous. Never share your food with mates with food allergies. Even if you think the food is safe, it’s still not worth taking the risk.

Always wash hands after eating

Always wash your hands after eating something another student is allergic to. This will help keep them safe.

Know what your mates are allergic to

Ask your mates what food they are allergic to. Consider your mates with food allergy when eating your food and try not to be messy. For school birthday parties and celebrations consider non-food treats and activities like stamps and stickers.

Get help straight away if a mate gets sick (even if they don’t want you to)

If a mate who has food or insect allergies is showing these signs tell them to stay where they are and get a teacher or person in charge straight away:

  • Finding it hard to breathe
  • Skin that is bumpy, red, and itchy
  • Swelling of the face, lips, and eyes
  • Vomiting
  • Looking pale and feeling dizzy

PBL AWARDS

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been at DPS.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring them to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

THIS WEEK AT DPS

Primary Proms Choir Rehearsal Day

On the 5th September the Stage 2 Choir went to rehearse 11 songs for a performance we will do on the 26th September. The performance brings together around 480 students singing at the Sydney Town Hall.

We had fun singing with other schools and learning different techniques. Our choir perfected our voices well… almost perfected them for our awesome concert coming up.

We arrived at Drummoyne Public school at 8:15am, marked the roll and jumped onto the really fancy bus. The choirs started singing and sounded beautiful. We had a really quick morning tea break and finished our repertoire at 1pm. We had a great day of singing and are looking forward to the concert in 3 weeks.

Year 4 Camp

On Monday, 2nd September, Year 4 departed for their first school camp at Stanwell Tops. Our first day was incredibly windy, which meant that some of our activities needed to be changed. We played lots of fun games, like 9 square and our new favourite - gaga ball! We also played fantastic indoor games: kings, queens and knights, one where we needed to toss our shoes to hit a bottle, and one where we had to knock cafeteria trays out of our opponents’ hands! Our first day ended with an exciting silent disco, where we could select one of three stations, listen to and sing along to our favourite songs. It was an enjoyable, entertaining and exhausting day!

The next day, we had much better weather, so this meant we could complete our exciting outdoor activities! Groups did the giant swing (which was so much fun), survivor and archery. Everyone had a great time doing these challenging but memorable activities.

Some other camp highlights were the hamburgers, pasta, and spending lots of time with our friends. We would like to thank the amazing staff at Stanwell Tops who were so accommodating and gave us a great experience despite the weather, our dedicated teachers, and our parents and carers for supporting us and preparing us for this wonderful camp.

We can’t wait for our next camp!
