Drummoyne Public School

Term 3 Week 8 Newsletter - Friday 12 September 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Festival of Instrumental Music – From DPS to the Opera House!

On Tuesday night, I had the absolute pleasure of seeing our Recorder and String Ensembles perform at the Opera House as part of the Festival of Instrumental Music – an unforgettable experience for everyone involved! A big thank you to Ms Suzy Sole for building these groups from the ground up this year and giving our students this fantastic new opportunity to shine.

The highlight of the evening was the spectacular finale, where 500 recorders and hundreds of violinists came together to fill the Concert Hall with music. It was spine-tingling to hear and such a joy to see our students as part of something so powerful.

I’d also like to thank one of our mums, Sarah Lindquist, for coming along during the day to help supervise the string group at their rehearsal – your support was a huge help in making sure everything ran smoothly.

Iron Cove Network Public Speaking Success!

We are so proud of our students who represented Drummoyne Public School in the Iron Cove Network Public Speaking Final earlier this week: Axel (Kindy), Aaron (Stage 1), Imogen (Stage 2), and Delilah (Stage 3). All four students competed with pride in a challenging competition that includes impromptu speeches, showcasing their confidence, creativity, and poise.Special congratulations to Axel, who placed second and received a Highly Commended award, and to Aaron, who won the Stage 1 competition! Aaron will now progress to the Grand Final at George River College in Oatley in November – an incredible achievement!

‘The Monties’ Take Over DPS!

What a week it’s been! Costumes are arriving, impromptu dance rehearsals are erupting all over the playground and you have all started snapping up tickets for ‘The Monties’ performances in the last week of term. The excitement is contagious!

I can’t wait to welcome you all back to the school to see our students in action and celebrate their incredible hard work. It’s shaping up to be a spectacular way to finish the term – full of fun, talent and plenty of energy. Don’t miss it!

Regards,

John Nguyen

THIS WEEK AT DPS

Metropolitan South and West Public Speaking Competition Finals

Congratulations to Axel E (Early Stage 1), Aaron N (Stage 1), Imogen T (Stage 2) and Delilah F (Stage 3) who represented our school at the Metropolitan South and West Speaking competition this week. Axel received a highly commended award and Aaron came first. Well done team DPS.

Student Recount

On Tuesday morning, I went to Annandale Public School to represent Drummoyne Public School in the Metropolitan South and West Public Speaking Competition. First, I went there and saw Axel in KB win a medal for being highly commended. Then there was time to walk around and explore the huge school.

After that, we went into the hall and they told us the rules of the competition. I was the first speaker and I was nervous. When they announced my name, everybody clapped as I walked onto the stage, which made me even more nervous.

I began my speech with everybody watching. I used hand gestures and tried my best to speak loudly, not too slow and not too quick. Then I listened to the other people speak and they were really good. They also used hand gestures and spoke very confidently.

Then it was time for the impromptu speeches. We only had five minutes to write our ideas and the topic was “Holidays.” I had an advantage because I had just visited Turkey in July, so it was easy for me to talk about my family and my culture. I tried to persuade the audience to go to Turkey because it’s one of the best countries in the world.

At the end, they announced the winners. The second place winner talked about bees and how they pollinate flowers to make fruits like watermelon. At that time, I didn’t think I was going to win, but then they announced the winner, and it was me!! I felt really proud, excited and happy. I won a trophy, a certificate, and now I get to represent Drummoyne in another competition.

I spoke about dreams coming true and to always dream big, because if you don’t dream big, you won’t become what you want to be. Now I’m a competition speaking winner and one of my dreams has come true because I gave it a go and did my best.

Festival Of Instrumental Music

On Tuesday, the 9th of September a group of 27 students went to perform at the Sydney Opera House.  This group consisted of three string players and twenty-four recorder players. We were lucky to be a part of the 1000 kids and guest performers.

Everyone who was performing in the recorder and the string ensemble had a black t-shirt with three blue feathers on it. This was the symbol for the festival of instrumental music ( Mimosa concert ).

Thank you Ms Sole for teaching us all year round.

CAPA NEWS

IMP Showcase

Last Friday, on the 5th of September, I went to Sydney Secondary College to play my violin with some other primary school students from different schools. We rehearsed our piece we were going to play at the IMP Showcase with SSC high schoolers from different campuses.

The next day, I went to the Conservatory of Music with lots of other students. In the first act, we listened to pieces of music by different SSC music groups. At the interval, we started to get ready to go on and play our piece but first we listened to the bands who were made up of primary school students from different schools and SSC high school students.

Then, it was our turn to perform under the bright lights! I had a really fun time playing and thought our piece sounded awesome.
