2025 Term 4 Issue #10

From the Principal

 Dear families & friends,

Learner Expeditions Project

At Felixstow we believe every child is and can be a leader. To demonstrate this we took Violet (yr 3), Tori (yr 4) and Zofia (yr 5) with us to share our Inquiry learning with other schools in the Education Department Learning Expedition project. Other schools all took their yr 6 leaders so Violet was by far the youngest in attendance!

They listened to and learnt about what other schools are doing, were interviewed and filmed about their thinking, and stood up in front of a room full of teachers and leaders to share the Felixstow story.

We are so proud of the way Violet, Tori and Zofia presented and shared their thinking and represented our school. With only one weeks notice, they were confident, thoughtful and articulate in their thinking and communication, demonstrating all the things we value at Felixstow. Congratulations on taking on the challenge and showing everyone that we are small but we are also mighty!

On reflection...

·       Violet - "Something I am still curious about is how some schools have not thought of this kind of learning before"

·       Tori - "Something new I learnt about was there are so many schools and amazing topics I didnt know about"

·       Zofia - "When teachers give us learning like this it let's me be me".

Pasi Visit

What an incredible privilege it was to host renowned Finnish educator and global education thought leader, Professor Pasi Sahlberg at our school in Week 2 this term!

His passion for meaningful, student-centred and holistic learning inspired our teachers and our students alike. We are looking forward to an ongoing connection with him.

Quiz night

A big thank you to everyone who came along to our quiz night to help raise money to support our OSHC program. We sold out of tickets and raised an impressive amount for our school. See the photos later in the newsletter of the fun and laughs had by all.

A huge thank you to Gillian, who did an absolutely fabulous job organising the evening, prizes and being a stellar quizmaster for the night. We have already had requests to do it all again next year so watch this space!

Outdoor Learning Day

Last week we celebrated our first ‘International Outdoor Learning Day’. It was a beautiful day with lots of fun had by all along with a whole lot of learning! We hope to see this become an annual tradition as we build our expertise in learning through play and nature!

2026 enrolments

We are currently finalising our numbers and budget for 2026. Thank you to everyone who has confirmed their plans for next year. If you have not yet let us know if your child is returning or not (Pink form) please do so this week. We still have some spots available in some year levels so if you know anyone looking for a local school make sure you let them know.

Follow our Instagram and Facebook pages

If you are not already following our Facebook or Instagram make sure you do. We are doing daily updates of what is happening at school and promoting the wonderful place that is Felixstow to our local community!

End of year

As we come to the end of year things get very busy and go quickly. Our new receptions have begun transition to school, our year 6’s have begun their transitions to high school. We have swimming week, year 6 aquatics, year 6 graduation, learning summary reports, end of year celebrations and lots of other activities and learning happening. Adelaide Wins a Ribbon at the Royal Adelaide Show

This is a photo of a weeping apricot blossom that I entered into the Royal Adelaide Show. I took the photo sometime in August in my front yard. To my delight it won third prize. This has inspired me to enter another photograph at next year's Show.

Growing and Flowing in Our Kitchen Garden!

This term, our students have been busy tending to our very own aquaponics system as part of the Garden Maintenance elective. It’s been exciting to see how science, sustainability, and teamwork come together as we care for our plants and fish! This week, we’ve been hard at work replanting the grow bed and celebrating the successful harvest of our crisp lettuces and cheerful sunflowers, which were planted back in late winter. Students have learned first-hand how water, nutrients, and living systems work together to create a thriving mini-ecosystem — and the results have been both beautiful and delicious! A big thank you to SA Water for their generous support through their grant program, which helped make our aquaponics project possible. Their contribution has allowed our students to explore sustainability in an authentic, hands-on way that connects learning to the real world.

Juniors with Sharni, Sarah and Abby

This term, our Junior Primary students have been immersing themselves in Nature Play each week, exploring creativity, collaboration and curiosity through hands-on provocations. With access to sand, water, paint and a variety of natural materials, students have been busy foraging, mixing, designing and creating. From running potion and perfume shops to painting rocks, building waterfalls, and even establishing their own spas and nature stalls. Each session begins with a yarning circle to build connection and community and ends with a reflective circle where students share their learning and discoveries. The engagement, imagination and enthusiasm from all students has been truly inspiring to witness!

News from Laura's Class (P1)

In inquiry we have been writing letters to the council and the government about animal safety. Lots of people are writing to the Prime Minister or local councils to make them aware of all the problems to do with animal safety and things that hurt them. Currently I am writing about climate change and the oceans in South Australia. I am working on a petition to send with the letter to make it more impactful as it is effecting lots of people. This petition will be at the front office for you to sign. Please come in and sign it to show your support.

Steve's Class (P2) News

It’s been an exciting and busy start to the term in P2! We were lucky to have a special visit from our local MP, Claire Clutterham, who spoke to us about how parliament works and how we, as students, can make positive changes in our community. The class was full of great questions and ideas about what it means to be an active citizen. In Maths, we’ve been exploring fractions and percentages in a very sweet way — by designing our own dessert bar for the Year 6 graduation night! Students have been calculating costs, comparing fractions, and working within a budget to create delicious (and sensible!) plans. It’s been a fun and practical way to see how maths applies in the real world. In English, we’ve been sharpening our use of precise and emotive language through a short writing task inspired by the fascinating bowerbird. It’s wonderful to see the curiosity, teamwork, and enthusiasm in P2 continue to grow — we’re learning lots, thinking deeply, and having fun along the way!

PE & Health with Leigh

In Physical Education over the past few weeks, the juniors have been focusing on balance skills. They are also developing throwing and catching skills in preparation for some small, modified tennis games. Laura's class have been working on a variety of target games, and are aiming to create their own game with a specific aim. The P2 class are working on their volleyball skills in preparation for their excursion to the Schools Beach Volleyball Carnival in Glenelg. In Health, students across the school have been exploring how to be cybersafe and how our digital systems work.

Art with Hannah

This term our subject matter in visual arts is the marine life affected by South Australia’s algae bloom. Students have just begun to sketch out sea creatures on their backgrounds made from food dye.

Congratulations to all the students who entered this year's Premier's Reading Challenge, they received their awards at today's Ban Ba Ban Balya. Well done!

Breaktime Activities

The Resource Pod is now open for one breaktime a day, offering students a variety of activities to participate in or just a safe space to relax and read a book. We will be holding some themed sessions in the near future and welcome any suggestions the students may have.

Returning Books

All borrowed books are due to be returned no later than Friday 28th November (Week 7). If we could have your assistance with this it would be much appreciated, as library staff need to stocktake all the books in the schools collection.

OSHC News from Hannah

Vacation Care Highlights- Glow Crazy Holiday Fun!

Our Vacation Care program was full of energy these holidays, and one of the biggest hits was our Glow Crazy Glow Party Day. The room turned into a mini disco, with lights off, glow sticks, black light on, and lots of laughter filling the space.

Children painted each other’s faces with neon colours and were quick to notice how the paint came to life under the black-lights. There were creative designs and plenty of teamwork as friends helped one another.

Educators loved seeing how confident and connected the children were, everyone found their own way to join in, whether that was painting, dancing, or helping with set-up. Lidija (P2) summed it up perfectly at the end of the day: “We all glowed.”

It was the perfect mix of creativity, movement, and laughter.

If you haven’t already, make sure to book in early for the next school holidays, we’ve got plenty more fun days planned and spots fill up fast!

Stay up to date:

Just a reminder, we post our full OSHC program on Seesaw, so it’s a great way to stay updated if your child attends OSHC. We also ask for family feedback weekly and would love to hear from you about what your child enjoys, ideas you have, or ways we can improve.

Thank You!

A big thank you to Gillian for organising such a fantastic Quiz Night to raise funds for OSHC, what a fun evening for everyone! We’re so grateful to all the staff, families and volunteers who helped make it such a success.

A special shout-out to our OSHC team for ensuring our ESB pre-assessment visit went smoothly.

And as always, a heartfelt thank you to our families for your continued support, we truly appreciate it! 💛

OSHC Wellbeing: Try Our Favourite Snack

Our OSHC children love eating simple and healthy Apple Sandwiches, one of their absolute favourites on our menu!

Just core an apple, slice into rounds, spread a little honey, and sprinkle with coconut and cranberries before adding another apple slice on top.

A fun, crunchy, and healthy treat that’s as easy as it is delicious.
