Drummoyne Public School

Term 3 Week 2 Newsletter - Friday 1 August 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Public Education Week Next Week

Next week is Public Education Week and we’re looking forward to celebrating everything that makes public education - and our school - so special.

We’re kicking off the week with our Grandfriends and Family Morning on Monday 4 August, and we’d love to see as many parents, carers and grandfriends as possible joining us for the festivities. The morning will include:

  • Book Fair (8:30am–12:00pm)

  • Public Education Week Assembly (9:30–10:30am), featuring our public speaking finalists, band, choir and music ensembles

  • Open Classrooms (10:30–11:20am)

  • Morning Tea & Cake Stall (11:20am–12:00pm)

There’s more to enjoy across the week too, including a Taikoz Drumming Performance on Thursday and a special family drumming workshop on Friday - so don’t forget to check the flyer below for all the details.

Refining Our Student Reports – We Want Your Feedback

With Semester 1 reports now distributed and parent-teacher interviews completed,  we’re turning our focus to improving our reporting processes in line with updated Department of Education guidelines. The Department is encouraging schools to provide parents with clearer and more concise information on their child’s progress, while also streamlining the process for teachers so they can focus on delivering accurate and meaningful reports.

To support this work, we’ll be sending out a short survey next week to gather your feedback on our current report format. Your input will help inform the changes we make for Semester 2 and ensure our reports continue to meet the needs of both families and teacher. We look forward to hearing your thoughts.

‘Bayrun’ Fun Run on Sunday

We’re excited to once again be taking part in the 2km Primary School Challenge as part of the BayRun this Sunday 3 August 2025, starting from 8:00am.

I’ve been in contact with the event organisers and they’re planning to go ahead unless there’s extreme weather, such as hail or lightning. I’ll be there bright and early to hand out Drummoyne PS athletics singlets for students to wear during the race. Just meet us at the Drummoyne PS gazebo before the race starts. To register, head to the BayRun website. You can select Drummoyne Public School when signing up for the 2km event.

Last year we had a fantastic turnout, including students, staff and the whole Nguyen clan - we’d love to see even more Drummoyne families getting involved this year - raincoats optional, running shoes essential!

Regards,

John Nguyen

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Please keep your children at home if they are unwell

To help protect the health of students and staff, we remind you to please keep children at home if they are showing cold or flu-like symptoms.

We understand that some children may have symptoms that are not contagious - in these cases, we may request a medical certificate confirming that your child is fit to return to school.

Congratulations

Italian award

Kayla C, of 5/6C, showed her talent for writing, not just in English but in Italian, by coming third place in the National Italian Education Awards this year.

Kayla wrote a composition entitled "La mia vacanza piu bella" (My nicest holiday) and won a certificate presented to her by the Italian Consul. She also received two hundred dollars.

Brava Kayla!

Lisa Cameron

Italian CL Teacher

Audition success

Congratulations to Jonny E, 1/2P, who had an absolute blast this week filming an episode of Spawn Squad, an ABC TV show about gaming. What a great experience! His episode will air in September.

Reminder - Tuesdays are nude food days

Nude Food Tuesday.

Please send your children to school on Tuesdays with food that is not wrapped or packaged in any form of plastic or foil including cling wrap, foil, polymer, aluminium etc.

So why Nude Food?

In an effort to reduce the amount of landfill the Environmental Leaders, with the support of the Student Government, have re-ignited Nude Food each Tuesday.

The Student Government Class Reps will be checking in with their classmates at lunch eating time and the start of recess to record who has brought food that is not in packaging (something they have to throw out).

Please support your child(ren) to bring a Nude lunch and recess tomorrow. This will go a long way to help reduce the landfill waste at DPS.

Many thanks,

Michelle O'Dowd

Assistant Principal - On behalf of the Environmental Leaders

LIBRARY NEWS

Book Week is getting closer!

Once again Drummoyne Public School will be celebrating children’s literature and we would love our families and friends to join in!

The big day of celebrations will take place in week 5, on Monday 18th August.

We will have two amazing authors, Serena Geddes and Belinda Murrell visiting us, an adventurous Book Week Parade and of course, lots of reading!

Author visit!

Also on the Monday, students from Kindergarten to Stage 2 will listen to a presentation from amazing author and illustrator, Serena Geddes.

Stage 3 will be treated to an exciting writing workshop from acclaimed author Belinda Murrell!

Notes regarding the author visits have been emailed out and are also in your School Bytes Parent Portal.

Students can purchase a book by Serena Geddes or Belinda Murrell leading up to their visit which will be signed on the day. Orders must be placed by 4th August using the details below. Any orders after this time will be sent after the visit and will NOT be available to be signed.

Parade!

Students are invited to come dressed as something book related! It could be a favourite book character, a favourite book cover, a definition from the dictionary, their favourite world record from Guinness or in the “Book an Adventure” theme. Family and carers are invited to come and watch the parade. The parade will take place Monday 18th August at 2:30 p.m.

Education Week Book Fair

As part of our Education Week open day, a book fair will be held in the library on Monday 4th August. Friends and families are invited to come to the library from 8:30 to 11:30 to have a browse and possibly make a purchase. Books can be purchased on the day using eftpos or cash.

All this week, students have brought home a “wish list” of books that have caught their interest from the fair.

Any books you may like to purchase for donation to the library would be greatly appreciated and a part of every book sale helps to raise funds for our school library!

We look forward to seeing you there!

Happy Reading,

Joseph Neufeld

OFFICE NEWS

Absence Notifications

Regular school attendance is important for your child’s learning and social development. If your child is absent from school, you must ensure that you provide the school with a written explanation.

How to submit an absence notification

From Term 3 2025, our school will begin using the School Bytes Parent Portal to help manage student absences. You can submit your child’s absence through the School Bytes Parent App or by email. We are no longer using Audiri.

The School Bytes Parent Portal allows parents to view all their children in one portal and enables parents to provide details of a planned absence, if the absence details are known in advance - for example; to report an illness or a scheduled medical appointment.

Parents can also provide a response for any unexplained student absences that have been recorded by the school.

Late arrival or early departure

Partial absences cannot be submitted on the School Bytes Parent App.  Parents must come to the office and sign their child/ren in or out of school.

Extended leave

Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, you can only submit up to 9 days leave on the School Bytes Parent App.

If travelling for 10 days or more, you will need to complete an Application for Extended Leave Form. You can download this from the school website and return to the school by email or in person to the front office along with your travel itinerary or flight details.

Student Safety Reminder – Use the Kerbside Door

We’ve noticed an increasing number of students exiting vehicles from the road-side door during drop-off and pick-up. This is a serious safety risk, and we want to avoid any accidents.

Please help us keep all students safe by ensuring your child always enters and exits the car from the kerbside door. A few extra seconds of care can make all the difference.

Thanks for your support in keeping our school community safe!

    Lost Property

With the recent cold weather changes students are taking their jackets on and off throughout the day and many are ending up, unclaimed, in lost property!

Office staff have been endeavoring to return items to students where the owner's name is clearly marked but many items have no name or the name of a student who has left the school.

Please clearly mark your child's hats, jackets, lunchboxes etc and encourage them to be responsible for their belongings.

    Thank you

Enrol Younger Siblings for 2026 Now!

Important information if your child travels to school by bus

Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services.

How can you help? Please remind your child to tap on and off and ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card) and remind them to tap on and tap off on every trip.

To apply for a school Opal card, visit https://transportnsw.info/school-travel-apply.  Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings.  Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.
