Year 12 Graduation

Congratulation to all our Year 12’s you officially graduated last Friday with the accolades (and a few tears) that you all truly deserved.

Many thanks to our staff, families, students and wider community your efforts throughout the week and finally on the day of graduation will have made life- long memories for our Graduating Class of 2025

It was also with pride that the school could announce that yet again for the 9th Year in a row Miles State High School graduated all our Year 12’s with a successfully completed Qld Certificate of Education and QLD Certificate of Individual Achievement.

Congratulations to all our exiting Year 12 you leave with an internationally recognised certification.

Our whole school community wishes you well.

Final Day for Year 10 and 11 Students

Today marks the final school day for 2025 for our current Year 10’s and 11’s.

At our Student Briefing held on Thursday morning we discussed the need to recharge and enjoy your break.

Statistics tell us that peers are the most powerful influence of supporting each other to re-think risky behaviour. If a peer/friend steps in and says ‘not a good idea, this could end badly’ it may allow valuable re-think time to change a decision to act through the consideration of the consequence of the impending action and hopefully they then will make a change in action.

We urge all our students to take care of themselves and each other over the holidays.

Reminder- Social media age restriction and your child.

The Student Morning Briefing presented to our students the impact of the December 10, 2025 Australia-wide social media ban.

‘From 10 December 2025, many social media platforms won’t be allowed to let Australians under 16 create or have an account.’  (eSafetyCommission)

On Wednesday 26 November the school sent out information to all parent/carers to assist you to understand and support your child’s understanding of, and impact of the ban.

The quick facts below from the eSafetyCommission answer a few common questions. https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/social-media-age-restrictions

Please note: - This ban also creates a greater urgency to ensure that students’ at Miles SHS comply with the state-wide technology device policy

of ‘phone away for the day’.

We request that all our parent/carers for the remainder of the year and into 2026 to support us to ensure the safety of all students with the misuse of phones at school.

Creative Generations

In 2026, it is proposed that the Miles Schools Cluster take a team of students to Brisbane to be part of Creative Generations State Schools Onstage.

This event involves students participating in a 500-voice choir and performing at the Brisbane Convention Centre as part of this event, in the first week of Term 3, 2026.

This event takes place at the Brisbane Convention Centre and is a rewarding and memorable experience for all students who participate. It also means a large commitment from team members and families.

Your child can nominate for this event if they are in Years 5,6,7,8,9,10,11, or 12 at school

and falls into one or more of the categories below: -

Your child:

  • Is singing in a school choir.
  • Has sung in a school choir in past years.
  • Has shown an interest in music and singing if there is no school choir available.
  • Was part of the Creative Generations team previously.

If your child is interested in nominating, they can collect an Information Note and Permission Slip from Miles SHS Student Services.

Please, if nominating, return the Permission Slip to Miles SHS Student Services no later than Friday 5th December.

Take care

Year 10 and 11 final day for 2025

Many of the current Year 10 and 11 students have been working on the first piece of assessment in readiness for 2026.  Senior teachers have been preparing the ATAR students with the prerequisites in the General subjects for 2026.  If your student decides over the holiday break that they may not want to complete a general subject for 2026-27, please ensure they make an appointment to see HOD of Curriculum – Mr Caleb Kuhl on their return to school within the first week to complete a subject change form. It is vital the students understand the importance of high attendance and a commitment to complete all work assigned in senior subjects, to gain a promising result.

Enjoy your holiday break and I look forward to your return in 2026.

Year 7 to 9 students

Our Junior Secondary will have two more weeks of school and officially finish Friday 12th December.  At the moment, students are completing their final assessment and everyday counts.  Please ensure your student continues to turn up for school, as we have not officially finished until the end of week 10.

Some students have informed their parent/carer that all assessment is completed for 2025, this is not correct and will be reflected on their Term 4 report card, if they are not here to complete their assessment.

Year 6 transition

The Yr 6 students from our local feeder schools will be spending Tuesday and Wednesday of Week 9 with us to experience two typical days at high school.  Thank you to our School Leaders and School Ambassadors that will be supporting the Yr 6 students over the two days.  Parents of the Yr 6 students are encouraged to contact the school to confirm their attendance on Wednesday 3rd December as part of the afternoon tea event.  If you have not enrolled your student for 2026 entering Year 7, please do as soon as possible.

Raelene Bates

From Head of Curriculum

Today is the last day for our year 11 and 10 students. Well done for all the work through the year. I hope that you have a good break and return to us ready for another big year. Reminder that learning starts from day 1 next year (27th January) and year 12 assessment will be starting right from week 1. Attendance right from day 1 is vital to students end of year results.

Homework club has now ended for the year. Thanks to all those who have attended and helped throughout the year. Special thanks to Mr Caleb Diggelman and Miss Jessica Slaughter for their vital role in making sure this opportunity is run for all our students.

Next year on Thursday 12th February, (Week 3) we will be holding our Investiture and Awards Ceremony. This will be where students are recognised for their attendance and academic results for Semester Two of 2025. Students that are receiving these awards will be notified prior to the event.

Students in year 7-9 have another 2 weeks and are currently finishing up their assessment. I know that they are currently working hard to get everything submitted. Once this occurs students will be engaging in learning that extends their education and interest in their subject areas.

Have a great last few weeks of school.

Outstanding PBL Improvements Worth Celebrating!

Miles State High School is proud to share some outstanding Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) results that highlight the collective strength of our school community. At the end of Week 7, our data was reviewed and shared with our regional PBL coach, Jennifer Buckland — and the improvements are nothing short of exceptional.

We have seen a dramatic decrease in OneSchool behaviour entries, dropping from 1962 in 2024 to just 713 in 2025. This represents a 64% reduction in behaviour incidents and reflects the hard work and shared commitment of our students, staff, families, and wider community.

This success has been built on strong foundations:

  • Consistent classroom practice by our teachers
  • Targeted Multi-Tiered support structures for students
  • Clear expectations and routines aligned with our RISE values
  • Supportive parent partnerships, ensuring consistent messages at home and school
  • Community collaboration, including guidance from our regional coach and local services

When we are working hard each day, it can be easy to overlook just how far we’ve come. But this data is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when everyone works together with a shared purpose.

To our teachers, thank you for your consistency and dedication. To our students, thank you for striving to meet our RISE expectations. To our parents and carers, thank you for your unwavering support and positive reinforcement at home. And to our community partners, thank you for walking alongside us to build a safe, respectful, and engaging learning environment.

This is a remarkable achievement, and our entire school community should feel incredibly proud. Together we are making Miles SHS a place where every student can succeed. 🌟👏

From the Guidance Officer

As we farewell our Year 11 and Year 10 students for the remainder of the year, we wish them a safe and restful break. We hope they are able to achieve everything they set out to do over the holidays as they prepare to enter the next stage of their senior schooling journey in 2026.

For all remaining students, we are looking forward to an exciting and engaging final two weeks as we wrap up Term 4 and celebrate the end of the school year. As families move into holiday routines, there are a few important wellbeing and safety reminders to keep in mind:

Changes to Social Media Rules – From 10 December

New social media guidelines come into effect on 10 December. Parents and carers are encouraged to talk with teens about online behaviour, privacy, digital footprints and staying respectful online.

Where to find support:

  • eSafety Commissioner: Practical advice, guides and webinars for parents.
  • ThinkUKnow: Information on online safety and emerging technologies.

Staying Safe When Gaming Online

Online gaming continues to be a major holiday activity for many teens. Families can support young people by discussing privacy, in-game communication, screen time expectations and what to do if something feels unsafe.

Where to find support:

  • eSafety’s Online Gaming Guide for parents
  • Office of the eSafety Commissioner reporting tools

Keeping Active and Healthy

School holidays are a great opportunity for young people to reset routines. Encouraging regular exercise, balanced meals and healthy sleep habits can help maintain both physical health and emotional wellbeing.

Where to find support:

  • Healthdirect Australia for credible child and teen health information
  • Headspace for resources on healthy habits and wellbeing

Planning a Balanced Holiday Routine Parents can support their teens by helping them build a holiday plan that includes fun, downtime, responsibilities and social connections. A balanced routine helps keep stress low and engagement high.

Where to find support:

  • Raising Children Network for guidance on routines, responsibilities and managing teen independence
  • Headspace for tools that support motivation, planning and emotional health

Looking Ahead

While our senior students begin their break, we still have two important weeks of learning remaining for our Years 7, 8 and 9 students. Every day counts, and we encourage all students to continue attending, engaging and finishing the year strong.

We are also very excited to welcome our future Year 7 students in Week 9 as they join us for their final two transition days. This is a wonderful opportunity for them to become familiar with our school, meet staff, and begin building confidence for their start in 2026.

We look forward to a positive finish to the term and thank our families for their continued support.

Year 12 Valedictory

Year 12 Graduation Ceremony

Year 9/10 Ag Challenge

Today, students from 9/10 Ag Skills completed what has been an amazing term of hard work and dedication, competing in a small competition of design technology.

For the past term students have been working on the concept of getting livestock to become weed spotters.  What started out as using Machine Vision Technology, MVT, to identify colours and shapes of plants, became a full blown amazing journey of learning, team work, encouragement and problem solving of integrated technologies.

The students' concept of placing a camera on livestock with an SD card to store photos, then running through an app to determine where weeds are on properties for future spraying programs has WON them first place in a competition run by Integrated STEM and Origin.

Many thanks to all who have supported this amazing journey for our students.  Origin, Integrated STEM, WDRC, UniSQ and our own amazing staff of MSHS.
