Term 3 - Week 6 (28th August, 2026)

Dear St Mary's School Community,

Focus Value: : Leadership

We set a positive example in the classroom, playground and community.

Family Friday

Once again we had a great turnout for this mornings Family event. The children love having parents and grandparents take an interest in their school work and we welcome these days.

Planning for 2027

As we begin planning for 2027, if your circumstances are changing and your child will no longer be attending St Mary's School, please let the Administration Office know as soon as possible.

You can contact us by:

Email: admin@stmarysmerredin.wa.edu.au

Phone: (08) 9041 1907

Thank you for helping us with our planning and enrolment preparations for 2027.

ToM

We wish our two Tournament of Minds teams the best for Sunday’s performances that start at 9.30am. All are welcome to attend, but we will perform both interpretations at the next assembly.

Father’s Day Liturgy and Breakfast

Don’t forget to join us for a sausage sizzle next Tuesday at 7.45am if you’re able. As with last year, you can join your children for brekkie, a quick kick of the footy on the oval and conclude with the prayer service. See our "Special Events" section for photos of todays Family Friday event.

Faction Athletics Carnival

A quick reminder of our Aths carnival next Friday. Mrs Crees, the teachers and the students have been busily preparing for the day.

Thank you

Thank you to Corey and Jess at Merredin Refrigeration and Air Conditioning for their fantastic support upgrading our airconditioning systems at St Mary’s School.

Class News

Year Four/Five

Year 4/5 have been very busy with lots of different learning happening in the classroom!

In Art, we have been looking at texture and how we can create different textures using a range of materials. Students used paint and oil pastels to create an otter floating on the water. We had some fantastic finished pieces! We have also included some of our artwork from the end of Term 2, where students worked together to create collaborative paintings using their fingers and primary colours. It was definitely a messy but fun afternoon!

In Mathematics, we have been learning about grid references and coordinates. Students have been practising how to locate different places and objects on a grid and use coordinates to describe their position.

We have also finally finished reading our class novel, Matilda! Students have really enjoyed following Matilda’s story and getting to know all of the different characters. Once we finished the book, we watched the movie and talked about some of the similarities and differences between the two.

We asked a few students about their favourite parts:

Maggie: “My favourite part is when Miss Honey talks to Matilda about her life.”

Ruby: “My favourite part is when the newt gets in Miss Trunchbull’s water!”

Jack: “My favourite part is when Matilda scares Miss Trunchbull by writing on the blackboard.”

It has been a great few weeks in Year 4/5!

Meckering Cross Country

Last week 5 of our students travelled to Meckering to represent St Mary’s in the Meckering Cross Country. Congratulations to the following students who ran amazingly, and all placed extremely well given there were a large number of competitors in each race.

Jack G – 1st PP/1/2 Boys

Chara-Lee G – 8th PP/1/2 Girls

Maggie G – 3rd 4/5 Girls

Zeke G – 4th 5/6 Boys

Ava W – 1st 5/6 Girls

Even with only 5 runners, their wonderful individual performance meant that St Mary’s placed equal 3rd in the Primary division on 34 points. With 24 schools represented at this event this is an incredible result.  What a fabulous effort by you all, well done!!

Take A Guess Fundraiser

Footy Tipping Round 24 and Overall Winner

And just like that the regular season has come to an end!

Firstly, Round 24 - Congratulations to Alex Settineri and Neil Grinham who were joint winners this week. They share in $200 thanks to Bartlett Mechanical.

Overall Winner

Congratulations to local legend Craig (Chook) Last who took the overall top spot for the St Mary's Footy Tipping for 2026. It came down to the last round and I thought he was in trouble when he tipped the Pies over Brisbane but his second gamble of picking the Doggies over Melbourne came through and he finished one game clear on top of the leaderboard. Chook wins a lovely $3500 for his efforts!

In second place for Jason Walker who was a great tipper all year. Jason wins $500 thanks to our amazing sponsor AFGRI Merredin.

Thank you to everyone who participated in footy tipping and also to our generous sponsors. The competition is a fantastic fundraiser for our school P&F so the support is greatly appreciated.

Good luck to everyone's teams in the finals and I will see you all next season!
