Message from Julie - Week 8, Term 1, 2025

Hi everyone,

It was wonderful to see a sea of orange at school on Thursday to acknowledge and celebrate Harmony Day. Thank you all for your support. Classes worked together on special activities, including planting wildflower seeds together to grow in classrooms and to discuss the theme ‘Everyone Belongs’.

Today marked the end of the NAPLAN assessments for year 3 and 5 students at Dernancourt. Over the last week and a half, students have participated in 4 assessments - writing, reading, language conventions and numeracy. Students approached the assessments with a positive attitude and a smile and are to be commended for this. Well done year 3 and 5 students.

Our fundraising committee have been hard at work organising an Easter Raffle and they will also be hosting a bake sale on Sports Day. Donations of Easter Eggs or craft activities for the raffle and of baked goods (no nuts) for the sports day bake sale are much appreciated. This year, all of our fundraising efforts are going towards playground upgrades.

Breakfast Club is always popular in the mornings and operates Tuesday to Friday each week. Many students look forward to the extra breakfast before starting their day. Breakfast Club is open to all students – even if they have had breakfast already (many of our breakfast club users enjoy a second ‘school breakfast’). Breakfast is served from the canteen, and if you would like to know more, the lovely volunteers would love for you to stop by, say hello and see what it is all about. Special thanks to “Kick-Start for Kids” for their support of our breakfast club.

On Tuesday March 4, we held our Dernancourt School Governing Council Annual General Meeting. At this meeting, we shared reports about school activities, including OSHC, Canteen and Parent Association. We also shared our school annual report for the 2024 school year. A copy of this report is available on our website. We also welcomed new Governing Council members to our committee. A list of our Governing Council members is below. We thank them for their time and support of our school.

Meaning Making Forum with The Chief Executive; Martin Westwell

On Monday Week 7, 8 year 5/6 students joined Julie in her office to join a Meaning Making Forum facilitated by the Department for Education Chief Executive, Martin Westwell. Our students joined over 1500 students from around the state in an online forum to gain an understanding of the 4 areas of impact in our strategy for public education:

  • Equity and Excellence
  • Wellbeing
  • Learner Agency
  • Effective Learners

Students participated in some games and activities that talked about the difference between learning mode and performance mode and how this is helpful to us as learners.

Thanks to Chloe, Samriddhi, Hugh, Samuel, Tyler, Ella, Charlotte and Ziyi for their efforts.

Every Day Counts!

Every Day Counts!

EVERY DAY COUNTS! Missed school adds up to a lot of missed education. Attendance rates since Covid times have not yet recovered to pre Covid (normal) rates across South Australia. We are working to have children at school every day. Every day matters. Please let the school know via the Audiri app, a phone call or Seesaw message if your child needs to be away and if it is for sickness or for family reason. All unexplained absences require follow up by teacher/school. An exemption signed by the Principal is required for family holidays of 3 or more days. Every day counts!

Garden Club News

This week at Garden Club we had Ileene J2, Ayana J5, Liano P3, Edward P8 and Luca P12 help us in the garden. We pulled out some weeds from one of our garden beds so we could plant some poppy seeds. The broccoli that was planted by our last Garden Club group and the apple trees received a good amount of watering after another hot few days.

Growing Cricket for Girls

Growing Cricket for Girls

SACA have been running a girls only program with support of funding from the Commonwealth Bank named Growing Cricket for Girls. We recognise the importance of creating more opportunities for girls of all ages to  play, compete, learn and enjoy cricket in a welcoming environment. This program has been supported by the school, in which girls receive a free cricket pack while also learning and developing their cricket skills. The program aims to encourage girls to participate in cricket and ultimately transition to a local community cricket club.
