Drummoyne Public School

Term 3 Week 7 Newsletter - Friday 5 September 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

A Heartfelt Thank You for a Wonderful Fete!

Last Sunday’s Spring Fete was an incredible celebration of our school community. From the bustling stalls and delicious food to the joyful laughter echoing through the playground, it was a true showcase of what makes Drummoyne Public School so special.

We want to sincerely thank all the parents, staff, ex-students, and friends who gave their time and energy to make the day such a success. Whether you were cooking, setting up, running a stall, or helping pack down, your efforts created a day full of fun and connection for our families.

A special mention goes to Rob Tolliday and the fete committee for their tireless planning and coordination in the lead-up to the event. It takes countless hours behind the scenes to bring it all together and we are so grateful for their commitment.

Thank you also to everyone who came along to support the day - your presence and generosity help us raise vital funds to enhance the opportunities we, as a school, are able to provide our students.

Planning for 2026

We have begun planning our staffing, structures and classes for 2026, and to do this efficiently we need to know our student numbers as accurately as possible. If your family is not intending to return next year, please let us know via the Schoolbytes link sent out last week. This information is essential for us to plan effectively.

We also encourage families to enrol any siblings joining us next year as soon as possible and, if you know of any families with children starting Kindergarten in 2026 who haven’t yet enrolled, please encourage them to do so sooner rather than later - while, of course, letting them know how wonderful Drummoyne PS and our community are!

Celebrating Our Wonderful SASS Team – SASS Recognition Week

This week we celebrated SASS Recognition Week, a time to say a heartfelt thank you to our incredible School Administrative and Support Staff at Drummoyne PS. Every day, they go above and beyond - welcoming families in the office, keeping our school organised and running smoothly, supporting learning in classrooms, caring for students, and making sure our grounds are safe and inviting. We are so lucky to have such a dedicated team who know our students by name, greet families with a smile and always find a way to help. On behalf of our staff, students and parents, thank you for all that you do to make our school the warm, vibrant community it is.

Tournament of Minds Success!

A huge congratulations to our three Tournament of Minds (TOM) teams who competed last Sunday and achieved outstanding results, with all three teams placing second in their categories and receiving honours!

TOM is a national competition that challenges students to think creatively, solve complex problems, and work collaboratively as a team across disciplines such as STEM, the arts, language and literature, and social sciences.

A big thank you to Ms Mooney, Ms Adams and Mr Sutton for the time and effort they dedicated to preparing our students, and to Ms Page for accompanying the teams on the day. We are so proud of our students for their creativity, teamwork and fantastic representation of Drummoyne PS!

Happy Father’s Day

Finally, to all the dads, grandads and father-figures in our community - wishing you a very happy Father’s Day! From one dad to another, I hope your day is filled with love, laughter and, if your day is anything like mine, a few new socks!

Regards,

John Nguyen

THIS WEEK AT DPS

DPS Success in Tournament Of Minds

Tournament Of Minds (TOM) is a regional competition focused on teamwork, thinking skills and performance. It is an annual competition held at Randwick Boys High school for the Inner West division.

Drummoyne Public School had three teams participating this year: STEM, Language Literature, The Arts and Social Science. There was also a spontaneous challenge where teams are locked in a room with judges and must answer a question within five minutes. They are judged on teamwork and thinking on the spot as they present their solution to the judges.

We would like to thank Ms Mooney, Ms Adams, Mr Sutton and Ms Page for supporting the teams along the way and making a memory in which they will cherish forever.

Social Science Team report

Our team included Zoe, Ella, Max, Hami, James, Ashton and Charles and our problem was TOMmunity Tackles Town Tensions. We had to design a recreational facility that had two potential locations and needed to be in our community, the Canada Bay Council. We were asked to pitch our idea to the community forum and had to showcase the advantages and disadvantages for each potential site. We also had to present a creative facility design that caters for the diverse needs of the community.  Overall, we did really well and came 2nd place!

Language And Literature team report

The Language and Literature team (Delilah F, OllieB, Jake L, Isaac N, Indie P, Lizzie W and Jazzy S) chose the topic “Tales of Light, Dark and Tan” based on the renowned artist, writer and filmmaker Shaun Tan. Our challenge consisted of selecting one of Shaun Tan’s books, so we chose Cicada. Cicada is treated horribly with no grace and no acknowledgment for  17 years straight. He lives in his work and by the end of the book, he cracks out of his shell and  flies to a beautiful forest with his Cicada buddies. To help the world get a better understanding of the message lying within the text, we reimagined the setting to be in a school addressing a problem many of us have faced at one point or another; bullying.

Our presentation highlighted each year of young Cicada’s life from Kindy to Year 6. Each year he is bullied, until he is with everyone else in the school part by the end of  school. On the day of the presentation we all felt a wave of tension and excitement. We did really well and placed 2nd with honours.

by Jake L and Isaac N

Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) team report

This year the STEM team consisted of: Asher V, Tom S, Claire L, Sienna D, Will H, Evin B and Eleanor S. Our problem was called Re-union and we had to make a 3D emblem, video and a performance explaining Earth’s 4 spheres - the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere.

We had a lot of fun and thanks to Mr Sutton for helping us prepare the performance. Overall, we came second and are really happy with our effort!
