Binalong Public School

Binalong Bulletin

Term 3, Week 4 2025

From the Principal

We've had a fantastic couple of weeks back at school, with students working hard to achieve their learning and personal goals. All students develop three goals with a focus on English/Literacy, mathematics and a personal goal considering how they will achieve their goal, what steps they need to take, and who might be able to help them. It's been inspiring watching the determination and pride students show when they achieve their goals.

Our Year 6 students, preparing transition to Murrumburrah High School next year, have been enjoying visits to Murrumburrah Public School. These visits help them build social networks and engage in transition and resilience activities, easing the move to their new school environment.

Last Thursday, we were honoured to host a joint visit from Ms Megan Couvee (Yass Network Director of Educational Leadership), Mr Chad Bliss (Relieving Executive Director Regional South and Connected Communities Directorate), and Mrs Belinda Brown (Bowning Principal) as a part of our regular termly Director school visits. It was a pleasure to introduce our students and staff and showcase our wonderful school. Our visitors were impressed by the students’ enthusiasm for learning and our staff’s dedication to providing equitable opportunities in a small regional and rural setting. Mr Bliss was impressed with our art on display and in particular our Operation Art program. He was also impressed with our commitment to collaborative practices and our Professional Learning Community network between Bowning and Wee Jasper schools, " This sense of collaboration and shared purpose speaks to the very heart of the Plan for NSW Public Education, with its emphasis on equity, excellence, and ensuring every student is known, valued, and cared for."

This week I head off on a week's long service leave with Mr Godman taking on my teaching responsibilities, and Mrs Ranie will step in as relieving  principal.

Happy Book Week!

In our classrooms

K-2

During our Literacy Unit this term, we have been looking at adapting play scripts. Students are currently co-writing a script inspired by the popular Julia Donaldson story "Room on a Broom". We are having so much fun with our characters that the class have requested to perform their play at the Week 10 Assembly. Pop it in your diary, you won't want to miss the K-2 play "Granny on a Flying Gopher!"

So far this Term in 3-6...

This term we have been busy, learning about facts or opinions, reading our new book- Ned Kelly And The Green Sash and working on our writing competition stories! We are working on our handwriting, and people have improved heaps! Joins are easy now for them and they are well on their way to success.

We have been striving forward with our times tables, working on our 7s and 8s to improve our heatmaps, fluency and speed. The competition in our class is very high! And we all want to improve.

Due to our book we have been focusing on bushrangers, learning more about Australian history and the hard times Ned and his family went through. We have read books, done research and listened to podcasts all about bushrangers.  We know so much now thanks to our new book!

Mr Godman has been on 3-6 because Mrs Arabin is away, but we have had a lot of fun. Doing many many science experiments and art works. We have learnt about pressure, gravity and why we need a question to answer to make it an experiment otherwise it's not an experiment at all!

Year 6 Fundraiser

Year 6 students have been fundraising for their Year 6 gift. After a visit to Murrumbateman Public School and playing in their Ga Ga Ball pit, the Year 6's have set themselves a goal to purchase one for our school. They are selling raffle tickets for a load of wood and last week visited the Post Office to sell tickets there. They'd love your support, so if you would like to buy some tickets, you can purchase at school, the Community Club, or at the 2LittlePigs.

Science Week 2025 9 - 15 August

Last week, the children from the Binalong Mobile Preschool came to our school for Science Week! We made fake snow, learnt about walking water, air pressure, and clouds in a bottle.

In fake snow, we combined baking soda and shaving cream and it made a substance that was like snow. After we made it, we had a snowball fight! It was really fun, thanks to Miss Grace who led the experiment.

In walking water we had seven cups of water, four had different food colouring (red, yellow, blue, red in sequence) and the other three had plain water. We put paper towels in each coloured cup going over to the plain water cup. For example, there was one plain cup in the middle of two coloured cups. The coloured cups’ water ran along the towel into the plain cup. If there was a plain cup in the middle of red and blue, the colours would mix together and make purple. Thanks to Miss Gerathy who let the colours mix!

In air pressure, we put a boiled egg on top of a bottle and it went through! The reason the egg went through the bottle was that we put a piece of burning paper in the bottle. The smoke created a vacuum pressure so that the egg was sucked in. We also made the egg go back out by blowing in the bottle really hard. This made the egg come back because there was not enough air to fit the egg. After the egg was expelled  we all ended up with egg on our face! Literally! The egg exploded and went high in the air! Thank you to Mrs. Ranie for helping with our eggs!

In clouds in a bottle, we had some water and we put some shaving cream on top. We got a little squirter and put blue food colouring inside. We squirted our blue colouring on the shaving-cream cloud and the cloud turned blue! But then the colours went into the water and made the water blue! At the end, we were allowed to touch the cloud! We put shaving cream on our hands and face. It felt nice. Thanks to Rebecca from the BMP for helping us in our sky-high experiments!

CDPSSA results

Last Friday, our qualifying students traveled to Temora to compete in the Cootamundra District Athletics Carnival. With the sun shining brightly, all competitors were eager to build on their achievements from our school carnival and give their best on the day.

Congratulations to everyone who proudly represented Binalong Public School! Special recognition goes to the students who have qualified to represent the Cootamundra District at the upcoming Regional Athletics Carnival on Friday, 5 September: Braxton Howard, who secured 2nd place in the 1500m, and the Nigel Bagley Small Schools Relay team — Audrey Corcoran, Zavier Brayshaw, Braxton Howard, and Ian Spencer. We wish them all the best as they continue to showcase their talents!

Trent Barrett Shield (Year3/4)

For the first time, Binalong Primary school entered a tackle team into the Trent Barrett League Carnival at Harden.

Ben Spencer from the Binalong Brahmans joined Miss Gerathy and Mrs Edwards to train with students in the weeks leading up to the day.

On Tuesday 12th August 10 students went off to Harden to participate in the Gala Day. They played 3 fantastic games, only improving as a team as the day went on. There were many tries scored and some brilliant tackles made. Although some students had little experience in the game, they picked up the skills well and we're very proud of everyone's participation.

It was a fun filled day and great to witness every team member encouraging others and demonstrating great sportsmanship. Congratulations to Cooper who was awarded 'Player of the Day'.

On Friday Wk 3, K-2 had a blast with Chonnie who came to run a drama session with us. We were in fits of laughter, having so much fun. We can't wait to see where these Drama lessons take us throughout the term.

During Year 3-6's session with Chonnie they focused on improvisation, scene setting and drama skills. We are looking forward to our next session next week.
