Term 4 Week 3 & Week 4: 28th October - 8th November 2024

Principal's Blog

Welcome to Term 4 Week 4.

Waves of Wellness

Thank you to our whole school community for coming together to raise funds for the Waves of Wellness Foundation. WOW is a mental health surf therapy charity, revolutionising clinical mental health treatment through the transformative power of surfing. Twelve staff members volunteered to be dunked by the class raising the most money and congratulations to 5/6R for being that class! Our school raised $1,3 70.70 to go to this excellent cause.

Peace Cranes

During my recent trip to Japan, I visited The Children’s Memorial in The Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima. I watched local school children present paper peace cranes hanging bunches of tiny, folded paper cranes into the large glass display cabinets. This was a very moving experience, so I investigated and found that schools from around the world send paper cranes to schools in Hiroshima who deliver the cranes on their behalf. With this, I thought that our students may like to become involved. By extraordinary coincidence, I found that for Term 4 our Stage Two children were reading Sudoku and the Thousand Paper Cranes!  Stage Two students have expressed their interest in contributing the required 1000 paper peace cranes, so we are currently working on the logistics.

2025 Classes

A reminder to families who are not returning to Caves Beach PS in 2025. Please contact the office as soon as possible as this information is vital to our current planning. If your child/ren are returning to our school but later than normal stat date, please let us know, so we can accommodate this in our class structure. If you have knowledge of any families moving to our school and wishing to enrol in 2025, please ask them to contact the school on 49711838.

A reminder that there will be an internet outage all day on Thursday 7th November. This includes telephone and emails.

Tell Them From Me Parent Survey

Our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted this term and run until Friday 8 November. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

More information about the survey is available at: education.nsw.gov.au/ttfm. To access the survey for our school go to: http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/zr6vs

The survey is available in 23 languages.

Grow Your Mind

Another strength you can grow is HELPFULNESS. Being helpful means to think of ways we can be of benefit in the classroom, on the  playground or at home.

When we show HELPFULNESS we use our SENSITIVE OCTOPUS and WISE OWL. This strength is important for our mental health because  we feel rewarded and happy when we help someone.

You can display HELPFULNESS by:

  • looking for opportunities to be useful; for example holding the door open for someone if they are carrying something
  • not waiting to be asked to help; such as lending a pencil to a friend if they have forgotten theirs

Set yourself a ‘Be of Benefit’ challenge today!

Environmental Group

The Enviro Group are very excited about our new addition to the school - over 2000 compost worms! Thanks to our Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant we have purchased worms to restart some worm farms at school. We also purchased more vegetable seedlings and some lovely looking blueberry plants. Our garden beds are really going well at the moment with the rain and milder sunny weather. We love now having a retractable hose so we can keep water up to the plants more easily as we come into the hotter months.

Learning and Support

Understanding the need for glasses

Q&A

How can poor vision affect my child’s learning?

The eyes are the most important input device for the brain. It is estimated that over 60% of the brain has tasks associated with vision input.  Glasses might be necessary to correct blurred vision problems and protect the eyes from further strain or damage. Poor vision can affect hand-eye coordination, eye tracking when following words on a page or not being able to read the whiteboard or lose their place while reading and inability to focus on computer and tablet screens.

Any condition that hampers vision or the processing of vision may result in problems learning as it interferes with reading and daily tasks.

What can parents to do help?

If you suspect your child is experiencing a problem with their vision, be sure to schedule an appointment for a comprehensive eye exam.

How much does an eye test cost?

There is a Medicare rebate for a comprehensive initial eye consultation and most optometrists do not charge any further costs or fees above this amount.

💫 A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT WE DO...

⚫️🟡 CAVES BEACH PUBLIC SCHOOL P&C ASSOCIATION 🟡⚫️

The Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) is a group of parents and carers who work hard to build and support our school community and to make positive improvement to our school environment. The P&C plays an important role through generating funds for school initiatives that fall outside of the schools allocated budget. And to liaise with the school about items that impact our children’s school.

Your P&C meets at least once a term on a Monday evening and operates the following services:

🎊 EVENTS

Throughout the year your P&C facilitates and host events to build and support our school community. We understand that school is about community, people, resources, opportunity and education. Popular events in the past have been Mothers Day and Fathers Day Stalls, Colour Runs, Easter and Christmas raffles to name a few.

🛍️ PURCHASING ITEMS

A big part of the P&C is fundraising and purchasing much needed equipment and items  the school may need. Being able to provide these items and brighten our children’s school makes all the difference.

🥪 CANTEEN

The Canteen runs Mon - Tues - Thurs - Fri, during term. Our menu varies from hot food, fresh sandwiches, some healthy snacks etc. Check out our menu on the QKR App. Our Canteen cannot operate without volunteer helpers every day assisting the Canteen Convenor. Food orders can be made online at Qkr!
