TERM 1 WEEK 2 - 9 FEBRUARY 2024

Principal Update

Welcome to the 2024 School Year. It has been lovely welcoming students back to school and having the opportunity to reconnect with many families and community members. A special welcome to all new students and their families. We are sure that you will be warmly welcomed into the Moruya Public School Community. This year we also  warmly welcome Vanessa De Jager. Vanessa will be teaching the Emus class with Ms Palmer and on our Assistant Principals' classes throughout the week as they support the implementation of the new curriculum. We are excited to have Vanessa join our team.

Learning is a partnership and we value your input and the ability to work with you to support your child. While in most instances any questions should be directed to your child's teacher first, I am always available to talk to you. If you have any questions or would like to contact me you can make an appointment through the front office, phone 4474 2363 or email me directly at sarah.davis47@det.nsw.edu.au.

Swimming Carnival

Thank you to Mrs Finney for organising a fantastic carnival yesterday. Thank you also to staff and parents who supported the event. Congratulations to all swimmers and spectators for your sportsmanship and encouragement.

We are excited to start the 2024 school year. Have a wonderful week.

Sarah Davis

Deputy Principal

Welcome back to 2024!

It has been so lovely to see the students return to school this week after the summer holidays.  Our students have had a really positive start to the year and have settled well into new classes.

Our staff have returned with an eagerness to provide the best possible educational experience for the students in their care.  So many of them have responded to my queries about their first few days with an “I love my new class” comment.

As you know, an important part of any student’s school day is lunch and afternoon tea.  This year our staff have all been provided with a bright orange vest for use when they are on duty at these times.  These vests make it very easy for students to find staff quickly and we are already seeing an impact in the playground.

The start of the year provides a great time to set some intentions. Whilst our expectations remain for our students to be safe, respectful learners, we will also be placing a big emphasis on the values of respect, kindness and honesty.  In our school community this will look like:

·         Making good choices

·         Being kind to yourself and others

·         Owning our behaviour

We thank you for your support by reinforcing these three behaviours at home and in our wider community.

Aboriginal Education

Welcome back to our students and families. Welcome to our Kindy students and their families to the MPS community.

This year promises to be another big year for Aboriginal education.

Our first Aboriginal Education Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday 14 February 2024, at 3.15 pm in the staff room. Parents and community are welcomed.

A big focus of this term will be completing Personalised Learning Plans (PLP) for all our Aboriginal students. These are done every year, in partnership with students, their parents, their teacher and the AEO, to set short and/or long-term goals for the student. I will be contacting our parents and guardians soon to organise meetings times.

Carrying on from the success of our first Yarn Up meeting last year with families of our Aboriginal students, the first one for 2024 will be on Thursday 22 February at 1.40pm in the Kitchen Garden. Invites will be sent out soon.

Our first Aboriginal Student Voice, which includes all our senior Aboriginal students, meeting will be in Week 4. These are held on every second Thursday. Looking forward to working with new Aboriginal Student Voice members.

In our last newsletter for 2023, I reported that seven of our students were successful in participating in the national program, the Indigenous Reading Project. I am proud to announce, that since then, due to the increase in their reading, all the students were able to keep the tablet. Of those seven, five of the students were offered to continue their reading journey and offered a place in the Indigenous Reading Project’s Reading for Life program. This means those students will be provided with new devices (when needed) and access to the digital library for as long as they are attending school and actively reading. Students can also request new book purchases for the digital library. Congratulations to Jack, Sierra, Eli, Nyree and Jailyn (now moved onto high school)!!!

I looking forward to building on our accomplishments from last year!!!

A Message regarding - SRE - Special Religious Education

All of us are made up of body, mind and spirit. Schools endeavour to do a great job in encouraging our children to reach their potential physically and mentally. SRE - Special Religious Education or better known as Scripture endeavours to encourage your children spiritually.

Every Monday, trained volunteer SRE teachers come into the school ready to share with the children that they were created by a loving God, who calls us to have fullness of life. Children are encouraged to see themselves as God sees them, full of gifts and potential to be a force for immense goodness in our world. As such, Christian SRE contributes to positive self image, identity and resilience, forming young people in their understanding of the morals and values from the teaching of Jesus. Throughout the lessons the children are encouraged to think and to ask questions.

Each teacher uses the Godspace curriculum. It is engaging - using technology, video clips, games, music.

If you would like to know more about the SRE program in your school contact the office and that can be arranged.
