Drummoyne Public School

Term 2 Week 4 Newsletter - Friday 23 May 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Winter Soiree: Monday 30 June  – Everyone Welcome!

We’re excited to invite all families to our Winter Soiree at 6.15pm on Monday 30 June in the school hall. This year, the event has grown to include not only our fabulous school band, but also some of our choirs and our brand new musical ensembles, the ukulele group, recorder ensemble and string ensemble.

Even if your child isn’t performing, come along to enjoy the show, check out what our music programs have to offer and support our amazing performers. It’s set to be a great night of music and community spirit. We’ll have the BBQ fired up, with sausages and drinks for sale – so bring the family and enjoy the evening with us!

Reminder About School Bus Behaviour

I’d like to ask all parents and carers whose children travel to and from school by bus to please take a moment to talk with them about expected behaviour during these trips. At school, we’ve reminded students that when they are on the bus, they are still representing Drummoyne Public School. That means demonstrating respect and responsibility even when off school grounds.

Unfortunately, we’ve recently had some incidents reported involving students filming on phones without consent, as well as some physical behaviour between students. We are addressing these issues directly with the students involved, but we would appreciate your support in reinforcing the message at home. We’re hopeful that by working together, we can ensure all students feel safe and respected while travelling to and from school. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Demountable Buildings Update

The Department of Education has recently flagged our three demountable classrooms for removal. These buildings will be refurbished and added to the Department’s pool of temporary learning spaces, which are crucial for supporting schools affected by natural disasters like bushfires and the recent floods. Having a ready supply of quality demountables is essential across our education system to maintain continuity of learning for students across the state.

After discussions with the Assets team, I’ve arranged for the two smaller demountables to be removed first. Once they’re taken away, the areas underneath will be tarmacked to create a cleaner, more usable space for our students. I am hopeful that the larger demountable will stay in place until the end of the year. This schedule will allow us to smoothly relocate Gowrie’s OOSH service during the break with minimal disruption.

This change will free up valuable playground space for our students and I’m excited to share that the school, in partnership with the P&C, already has plans to install new playground equipment in these areas to create more adventurous play opportunities for our older students.

Regards,

John Nguyen

THIS WEEK AT DPS

Week 3 Peer Support

This week children revised what they have learned about resilience and discussed people who show them support. Through a story, children had to identify where the character has used personal qualities, strengths and skills to help overcome challenges. Children discussed a range of challenges to determine the best person to approach for support. They consolidated protective factors for resilience by revising their own strengths/skills and identify 5 people they can go to for support.

Please remind your child of their qualities/skills and encourage them to ask for help in challenges.

Debating Report Term 2-Week 4

This week DPS debated against Nicholson St Public School. The topic was ‘Homework is a Waste of Time’.

The affirmative team, the Abbots were the away team, with Hamilton as 1st speaker, Maeve as 2nd speaker, David as 3rd speaker and James as team advisor. They argued that homework negatively impacts students' lives by preventing them from having a balanced lifestyle that affects health and wellbeing. They also pointed out how it wastes teachers' time.

The Frasers were the home team. As the negative, they argued that homework can be easily scheduled along with other activities, that it reinforces learning, is helpful from a teacher's perspective and gives parents a window into what their child is currently doing in class. Well done to 1st speaker Ashton, 2nd speaker Isaac, 3rd speaker Oliver and team advisor Charlotte on trying their best despite losing the debate.

A huge thanks to Davids’s mum, Magi for providing transport, conveying the students to Nicholson St in torrential rain. Also, thank you to our chairperson Elizabeth and timekeepers Claire and Delilah who were also meeters and greeters.

PBL AWARDS

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility & Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been at DPS.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring them to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

Assembly Stars

This week, I was thrilled to audition over 50 students eager to become amazing Assembly Stars, with even more keen to have a go in the future!

With such a positive response, I’ll be grouping some students based on similar or complementary skills. To support our younger performers, each will be paired with a Stage 3 buddy to help showcase their emerging talents.

It was wonderful to see so much passion from the students, even those who shared performances that are still taking shape. I can’t wait to see how their acts grow with practice and look forward to seeing them shine in a future audition.

Keep practising - you could be our next Assembly Star!

GENERAL NEWS

The Mad Food Science Incursion

We’re proud of our school’s commitment to student wellbeing. This year, as part of our commitment to students and families, all students will be participating in a food education program next month called ‘The Mad Food Science Incursion’ run by Suzanne Burke from The Root Cause. The theme of this year’s interactive student incursion will be What’s In My Trolley?

One of the best ways to keep our children healthy is through what they eat. Our school and The Root Cause believe this incursion will help make it easier to get your children to eat healthier foods that support their health, learning, behaviour, resilience and also protect the planet.

The Root Cause’s education programs have impacted over 50,000 children, teachers and parents Australia-wide. Bel Smith, Author and Founder of The Root Cause has been featured in national TV, print and radio media. Their incursions have received great responses from students, parents, and teachers alike. We’re excited to bring this incursion to you.

  • Date: Tuesday 17th, Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th June
  • Venue: School Main Hall
  • Duration of the incursion:  The date of your child’s incursion will depend on the grade that your child is in and the workshop will run from between 60 and 90 mins.

A free Virtual Parent Webinar will be provided on Friday, 20 June at 11.45am to reinforce what your children learned. You’ll also learn more about how food affects your child’s learning, behaviour, and long-term health, plus simple, non-judgmental ways to start making healthier choices.

Game Changer Challenge 2025

Teams were privileged to have breakfast with Sally Sitou, MP for Reid, in the STEAM Room on Tuesday. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss sustainability, in preparation for the teams' submissions for stage 1 of the Game Changer Challenge 2025  (GCC'25) competition next week.

Stage 1 of the GCC'25 is to carry out initial research on sustainability, considering issues around three areas; people, place and planet. Sally's involvement in Local, State and National levels of government, provided the students with an invaluable insight to current and future sustainability projects.

Sally has asked the students to keep her updated with their progress, and is keen to pass on their 'best' ideas from stage 2 of the GCC'25 to the Hon Chris Bowen Minister for Climate Change and Energy, as well as, the Australian Minister for the Environment and Water, Murray Watt.

I am so very proud of all students involved in the meeting. After the meeting, we received this message from Sally's office: 'Sally had a great time and was really impressed with all their engagement and intelligent discussion.'

Important information if your child travels to school by bus

Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services.

How can you help? Please remind your child to tap on and off and ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card) and remind them to tap on and tap off on every trip.

To apply for a school Opal card, visit https://transportnsw.info/school-travel-apply.  Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings.  Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.
