Term 4 Week 5 Newsletter - Friday 15 November 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

End-of-Year Presentation Day Assemblies

We are excited to invite you to the upcoming Presentation Days at Drummoyne Public School. On these special occasions, teachers will celebrate and recognise the achievements of their students in various areas. Each class will present awards for Academic Achievement, Citizenship and Effort, along with additional stage-based awards chosen by teachers and specialist staff.

Presentation Day Schedule:

  • Kindergarten to Year 2: Monday 9th December @ 9:30am

  • Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4): Friday 13th December @ 9:30am

  • Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6): Friday 13th December @ 12:30pm

The Stage 3 assembly will also feature the presentation of a few major awards for our Year 6 students. These include:

  • Citizenship Award: This award, sponsored by Five Dock RSL under the ‘ANZAC’ spirit ethos, celebrates qualities of friendship, honesty, loyalty, fairness and courage. The recipient will receive a $150 JB HIFI card and a framed award.

  • Academic Award: This award honours a student for outstanding academic performance across all subjects, with special recognition in literacy and numeracy.

  • Leadership Award (Prefect): Awarded to a school prefect for exceptional leadership, community involvement, initiative in school activities and participation in extracurricular programs. This award is generously sponsored by our local MP, Sally Sitou.

  • Principal’s 'Excellence in Education' Award: This award recognises a student with a strong work ethic and exemplary school spirit who serves as an outstanding role model through their involvement in academics, school life and extracurricular activities.

Each recipient of these major awards will receive a personal trophy and have their names engraved on the Honour Boards displayed in the school office foyer.

Additional Awards:

  • Sydney Secondary College (Balmain) Award: Presented to a Year 6 student enrolled to attend SSC Balmain, this award acknowledges qualities aligned with the SSC Balmain values of high expectations, student voice and responsibility. The recipient will receive a voucher for school supplies and uniforms.

  • Frank Marjason Award (Year 5): This special award, named in honour of Frank Marjason, is given each year to a Year 5 student who demonstrates ongoing effort, achievement and passion in the creative arts.

We look forward to celebrating the hard work, dedication and talents of all our students with you at these assemblies.

Remembrance Day Assembly

On Monday, our school gathered to honour those who have served and sacrificed in times of war. A moving ceremony was led by our dedicated prefects, who spoke with respect and maturity as they reminded us all of the significance of this day. It was wonderful to have a few parents join us for our assembly this year. Their presence added a special sense of community to the event and reminded us of the shared values that bring us together.

P&C Discos

Last week, our school hall came alive with music, lights and laughter as students from K-2 and Years 3-6 enjoyed two highly successful discos. A special shout out goes to Susan Murray for her tireless efforts in organising the disco and to all the dedicated parent volunteers and teachers who helped with everything from setup and supervision, to the much-loved glow sticks, prizes and snacks! Their commitment and enthusiasm ensured that each child had a safe and memorable evening. Events like these are more than just fun - they play a crucial role in building our school community and fostering a sense of belonging among our students and families. We are very grateful to all of our volunteers who give their time and energy to make these activities possible. Thank you!

November P&C Meeting

Our final P&C meeting this year will be held on Tuesday evening next week and everyone is invited to attend to discuss end of year events and planning for next year. The meeting will be held on Tuesday 19 November from 7.30pm in the school library. We look forward to seeing you.

Regards,

John Nguyen

Bus travel to and from school

It is every student’s responsibility to behave in a manner that ensures the safety and comfort of passengers and drivers when travelling to school on a bus. In particular we ask parents/carers to remind your child/ren to remain in their seat and to not move around the bus unnecessarily.

Leaving Early in 2024 or Arriving Late in 2025?

Will your child be finishing the school year early or returning late in 2025 due to leave with the family? The final school day for this year is Wednesday 18 December 2024 and the commencement date for all students next year is Thursday 6 February 2025.

If your child will be absent at these times, would you please email the school office to confirm that your child will be requiring a place at DPS next year and let us know the date you are returning.

Class of the Week - 5/6O Songlines

In Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, Songlines are told in many forms including language, song, dance and recorded in artwork through symbols.

Students in 5/6O used Songlines as a stimulus for creating a map of a journey between significant places in our school and wider community. Working in small groups students decided on a significant place within the school/community environment, brainstormed ideas and designed symbols to represent their chosen place.

After writing an explanation about the components and elements included in their symbol, they created their artwork using carefully chosen coloured oil pastels to reflect the environment.

Each group then presented their artwork and made connections with other groups' symbols. The end result was the 5/6O Songline which documented the journey between significant places in our community.

Please come and see the whole songline on display outside my office.

Stage 3 Cricket Gala Day

On Tuesday the 12th of November, all of stage 3 had a fun day out of school playing cricket at Taplin Park, which is right next to Drummoyne Oval. We played matches, had catching tournaments, and got to dive for some classic catches on the large inflatable mattress.

Later that evening, the Sydney Thunder were playing the Perth Scorchers at Drummoyne Oval in the WBBL, and I was privileged enough to do the bat toss. It was lots of fun and I got to meet the two captains as well as getting their signatures. The rest of the night was very enjoyable, we had the Drummoyne PS marquee, and lots of students came.

I'd like to thank all the teachers for putting together a great day out and I will miss all the Drummoyne sports gala days next year when I go to high school next year.
