Term 2 Week 6 Newsletter - Friday 2 June 2023

PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The Week runs from 27 May to 3 June every year. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

As you know, reconciliation is a journey for all Australians – as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation.

At Drummoyne PS, we are currently developing a school Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) through the Narragunnawali program and framework and we will share updates with you during year.

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Inner West Zone Cross Country Carnival Runner-up

Congratulations to our Zone Cross Country team who were runners-up recently at the zone carnival. Well done to everyone who competed and thank you to Leah Pegler and Michelle O'Dowd for supporting the students to attend.

Some 16 students have qualified to represent the Inner West Zone at the Regional Cross Country Carnival in Miranda on 15 June. We wish them good luck for the carnival!

Semester 1 Student Reports

In recent weeks, teachers have been working hard in preparing student reports to parents which will go home in the last week of term. The reports are part of our assessment and reporting process and an integral component of the overall teaching and learning cycle.

Our teachers have been working in their stage teams to ensure our assessment practices allow every student to display their knowledge and skills in relation to the outcomes and content covered in classrooms this semester. We are aiming to provide parents with relevant and clear information about the performance and achievements of your child, in terms of both strengths and areas for development.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Class of the Week - Stage 3

Stage 3 classes have been learning about visual literacy in the library. Students first looked at examples of book covers and illustrations, learning the language of visual literacy and how to read it.

Using artists such as Anthony Browne, Jane Tanner and Matt Ottley for inspiration, students created their own artworks incorporating some of the interactive features of visual literacy such as angle, distance and eye contact and compositional features such as salience and vectors.

Every Day Matters!

Every day matters, right throughout the term!

It is really important for students to come to school every single day, unless they are sick.

Being at school every day boosts student learning and confidence and helps them build and maintain friendships.

A reminder that planned travel should only be taken during school holidays and students should be at school every day during school term, right from beginning to end.

Missing a day here or there may not seem like much, but absences add up. Every day matters and we are here to support all students in attending and engaging with their learning every day of the term.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

RAT kits are available from the school office if needed

RAT kits were sent home with all students at the end of Term 1 and will be sent home next week to Year 5 prior to their overnight excursion. Even so, if any children are experiencing COVID symptoms and parents would like another box of RAT'S for continued testing, please call or visit the office to arrange collection.

COVID-smart measures in schools

Our layered COVID-smart measures – staying home if unwell, hygiene and cleaning practices, testing for COVID-19, masks strongly encouraged and ventilation – will continue this term. More details on our Advice for families page.

NSW Health advise that during the winter months, COVID will continue to present a health risk to the community. Accordingly, schools will implement baseline COVID-smart measures to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members. These key COVID-smart measures include:

  • staying home and getting tested if unwell, and only attending school when symptom free.

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and staff. Please contact us for test kits.

Staying home when sick

With flu cases on the rise, we would like to remind you that simple hygiene such as regularly washing hands will help stop the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

Students are asked to stay home when sick. They should only attend school when they are symptom free.

Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing symptoms of flu or COVID 19 are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses (e.g. allergies or hay fever) that require treatment and management by a doctor.

HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH THE NEW CURRICULUM

Vocabulary at home

Vocabulary refers to the words we know, understand and use to communicate effectively. It is critical for skilled reading comprehension and also plays an important role in word recognition.

Beginning readers use knowledge of words from their oral vocabulary to recognise words that they encounter in print.

When students segment (‘sound out’) a word, their brain connects the pronunciation of a sequence of sounds to a word in their vocabulary. If they find a match between the word on the page and a word they have learned through listening and speaking, and it makes sense to them, they will keep reading. If a match is not created, because the word they are reading is not found in their vocabulary, then comprehension is interrupted. This will be the case even if they are able to produce the correct pronunciation through the decoding process.

It is also critical to develop and deepen the oral vocabulary of beginning readers, so that as they encounter increasingly complex texts, they have a robust vocabulary store to strategically apply for comprehension.

When reading texts with students, teachers consider the different words in the text and:

  • How generally useful are words in the book?
  • How does the word relate to other words, to the background knowledge students have stored or what they have been learning about?

  • What does the word bring to a text or a situation?

Below is a vocabulary routine you could bring into home reading to build on to and strengthen your child’s vocabulary store.

You will find one for K-2 and one for 3-6.

DEBATING REPORT

Debate #2

This week DPS debated against  Nicholson St Public School. The topic was ‘Fast food advertising should be banned’.

The  Scomos were the away team. As the affirmative, they clearly explained why fast food advertising is an issue, focusing on childhood obesity and why advertising companies target young people. They also addressed broader health issues, the nature of addiction. Their compelling teamline was ‘Fast food advertising is like handing out a death sentence for everyone who is blinded by it!’

Congratulations to Ist speaker Aria Shipp, 2nd speaker Amelia Baggett-Grenfell, 3rd speaker Lucy Fernley and team advisor Sophie Hill who won their debate. Well done, Amelia who was chosen as debater of the day, for her expressive manner. A very big thank you to Sophie’s mum, Alison, for providing transport.

The negative team, the Bartons, comprising Sam Bains as 1st speaker, 2nd speaker  Lachlan Ong, 3rd speaker Triet Nguyen and Demi Pavlis as team advisor, argued that fast food advertising is closely regulated and that educating people about fast food is better than banning it. They pointed out that it is a misconception that all fast food is unhealthy and that it was a convenient option for busy people who don’t have time to cook. Their team line was ‘Banning is a lazy option’. The Scomos put up a good fight, but were narrowly defeated by Nicholson St. Congratulations to Triet, who was chosen as the debater of the day for his excellent rebuttals.

Also, thank you to our chairperson Aydin Dizdar, timekeepers Amber Worden and Gabi Buckman and meeter and greeters Theo Kav and Gabi Buckman.

Netball Gala Day

On Tuesday 30th May 19 Stage 3 students, Miss Davis & Ms Phoebe had an early start to get out to Heffron Park, Maroubra for a day full of netball!

Everyone was very excited to get out and play. We had 2 teams of students with a mixed range of playing ability. Some had never played in a competition before, where some students play regularly. Each team played 5 games each consisting of 2x10minute halves. Here are the results:

Team 1 – Won 3 out the 5 games, with a few very close games!

Team 2 – Won all 5 games, convincingly so!

Everyone had a great day. It was so nice to see all the students respecting each other, the umpires, other schools but most importantly improving as a team each game! Here are some quotes from students about our day:

Hayden: The games were amazing; everyone tried their best!

Tahlia: Teamwork was amazing, everyone tried their best; it was fun!

Jack: It was very fun, and everyone worked together.

Indi: We all persevered through the tough games.

A special shout out to Ms Phoebe (university practicum student) who came along and umpired for us!

Also, for our parents who came and cheered us on. Thanks for supporting us!

I can’t wait until next year!!

PSSA Sydney East regional netball trials

On Monday 29 May, IWPSSA participated in the Sydney East regional netball trials at Menai. The following students from our zone competed for a spot on the Sysney East regional team alongside 110 students from other zones, namely:

  • Gabrielle B and Juliette B

Teams initially played five games with Inner West placing 3rd overall in their pool. They then played off against Balmain (3rd in Pool B) to win convincingly by 11-1 and take 5th place across all Zones.

Results: R1 7-8 (loss); R2 13-3 (win); R3 8-4 (win); R4 18-1 (win); R5 6-14 (loss); Playoff 11-1 (win)

The day encompassed a high level of competition with quick turnarounds, but it was a lot of fun for our team who bonded quickly without any prior team practice.

The quality of play during this time was exceptional and it was very hard to pick a team of ten. Huge congratulations to all our students who competed on the day. They displayed excellent skill and true sportsmanship.

GENERAL NEWS

Danger - please avoid parking in bus zones

The message below was sent to the school on behalf of the bus drivers who are driving the school run, route 745, in the morning and afternoon.

"We are writing as we are having a hard time to pick up/drop off the kid’s safely due to occupied bus stops.

We have emailed the Canada Bay Council but the issue still continues. We are hoping if this email is coming from schools maybe it will get some action. Please see the attached photo of the cars and bus stops that are always occupied during school hours.

We hope to get this issue rectified soon before any kids get injured jumping in/off the bus."

Tap on and tap off, every time you travel by bus

Our school is partnering with the local school bus operator, Busways, to support a new Tap On and Tap Off education campaign encouraging students who travel by bus to correctly use their school Opal cards. Busways is implementing this campaign throughout Term 3, 2023. This campaign will focus on a simple message – tap on and tap off every time you travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important?

The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services. How can you help? If your child travels to school by bus, please ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card).

Visit Transport for NSW website to apply for a school Opal card. Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings. Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.

Thank you for your support with this campaign.

Reminder - please return your P&C Volunteer Form ASAP

Each year our parent community plays a vital role in supporting Drummoyne Public School.  We are very fortunate to be part of such a wonderful community! The richness of school life that the children enjoy is due to the ongoing support of parents, grandparents and friends of the school.

One important avenue of support is through P&C organised activities, providing funds each year for various projects.

The purpose of this post is to ask all families to support the organisation of one P&C activity this year.  Our hope is that all families will ‘play a part’ in enriching the lives and learning of our children through volunteering for just one activity.

Would you please indicate on the form attached below one P&C activity or role that you would be willing to be involved in this year and hand to your child’s class teacher at a parent teacher interview or to the school office and record your willingness to support the school and P&C.

This information will be collated and a member of the P&C will be in touch in due course.

We hope that 2023 is a wonderful year for you and your family.
