RECONCILIATION WEEK
Last week was Reconciliation Week. All our classes celebrated this week through their learning programs and by engaging in artwork, some of which can be seen below.
What is Reconciliation?
Reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians.
The theme for this year, Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future: calling on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.
The artwork on this year’s poster was created by Kalkadoon woman, Bree Buttenshaw. It consists of native plants that are known for regenerating after bushfires and thrive through adversity. It symbolises our collective strength and the possibilities of renewal.
Now to Next:
Our senior classes (Year 4/5 and Year 5/6) reflected on their ‘now’ and what they will do ‘next’.
Here are some of the wise things they wrote:
Now … I try not to judge people
Next … I will keep being open to learning about different cultures
Now … I recognise what Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples had to go through
Next … I will learn more about different cultures and recognise what happened more often
Now … I understand Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day
Next … I will forever respect the inventions and everything the First Nations Peoples have done
Now … I know how the Aboriginal people cared for the land
Next … I will learn about the culture to better understand it
Now … I know more about the stolen generation and what happened to them
Next … I will help other people to understand what Reconciliation Week means
Now … I know the past of the First Nations Peoples
Next … I will talk to people about the First Nations Peoples when they’re racist
