Drummoyne Public School

Term 2 Week 6 Newsletter - Friday 6 June 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Reconciliation Week

Over the last week, we marked Reconciliation Week across the school - a time to reflect on our shared histories, cultures and the steps we can all take toward reconciliation in Australia.

While we were disappointed by the last-minute cancellation of the Koomurri incursion, our Reconciliation Week assembly was a great success. It was wonderful to see so many families join us for this important event. A highlight was our youngest students from KB, who reminded us of the importance of celebrating difference, showing understanding and respect, and what it truly means to be Australian.

The assembly was a powerful example of our school community coming together to recognise and honour the culture and traditions of our First Nations people. Thank you to all staff and students who contributed to making the week meaningful and memorable. Your children will play an important role in reconciliation as they grow and it’s important that, as a community, we model our understanding of the value and importance of this effort.

K-6 Athletics Carnival

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at our School Athletics Carnival on Wednesday. It’s been wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents putting their hands up to volunteer - thank you! It’s always great to have a strong crowd of spectators and helpers to cheer on our students as they give their best on the track.

Wishing you a majestic King’s Birthday long weekend.

Regards,

John Nguyen

Do NOT Enter This Competition… Unless You Want Andy Lee to Visit Our School!

To celebrate the launch of Do Not Watch This Show, Andy Lee is inviting schools across Australia to participate in a hilarious competition — with a twist!

How to Enter:

  • Open to primary school students in Years 1–6

  • One entry per student.

  • Send an email to donotenter@abc.net.au and tell them in 50 words or less why Andy absolutely should NOT come to your school to premiere his brand-new show.

  • The more creative, funny, and ridiculous the excuse, the better!

Whether it’s because your school is “too stinky,” “too messy,” or “too full of zombie teachers,” Andy wants to hear it all!  The winning entrant will receive a special premiere screening of Do Not Watch This Show and a Q&A with show creator Andy Lee on Monday 30 June.

We are happy to give permission on behalf of the school for students to enter and parents are welcome to use the school’s email address (drummoyne-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au) as the ‘teacher’s email’ if needed.

For more information, visit the official competition page: Do Not Enter This Schools Competition

THIS WEEK AT DPS

National Reconciliation Week

Warami,

National Reconciliation Week concluded on Tuesday, 3rd June and was celebrated with a special assembly. The theme, Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future. Hosted by our Year 6 leaders, students listened to the reasoning behind Reconciliation Week. Malya P gave our personalised Acknowledgement of Country.

This semester, students from 5/6H engaged in learning with a strong focus on Australia’s past and the impacts on Aboriginal peoples. This included an insightful discussion on the origins of Reconciliation Week - the successful 1967 referendum to amend the constitution to count Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as part of the Australian population and the High Court Mabo decision. This saw the high court overturn the definition Terra Nullius and recognise that Australia was occupied at the time of European settlement. It also acknowledged the legal rights of Indigenous Australians to their ancestral lands.

KB students shared three songs. Firstly, a song originating from the Torres Strait Islands called ‘Inanay’. The second, an Aboriginal song called Marringa Lullaby. Marringa means sleeping in Anindilyakwa Language. The third was a portion of the famous song, ‘We are Australian’ by The Seekers.

As a proud ex-student of DPS, I reflect on our school’s journey towards reconciliation and am heartened with the way in which students learn about Australia’s shared history. We look forward to NAIDOC Week where students will work with Aboriginal artists to continue developing their appreciation and understanding of Aboriginal art, culture and history.

Dijarigura,

Mrs Buchanan

Air resistant parachutes

In class, 5/6C students made a simple parachute by taping four equal lengths of string to each corner of a serviette. They dropped their parachute and timed how long it took to land.

Using plastic bags and other materials, students designed and created a second parachute that would drop more slowly and land more gently using their knowledge of air resistance.

Debating Report Term 2-Week 6

This week DPS debated against Leichhardt Public School. The topic was ‘Competition is a Good Thing’.

The affirmative team, the Frasers were the away team, with Claire as 1st speaker, Elizabeth as 2nd speaker, Delilah as 3rd speaker and Isaac as team advisor. They argued that competition drives improvement and promotes hard work in the classroom also preparing students for real-world challenges. They also spoke about competition in sports and how it shapes character. Congratulations on a convincing win.

The Abbotts were the home team. As the negative, they argued that competition creates unhealthy pressure and stress and can lead to disappointment and loss of self esteem. They also talked about losing friends and the unethical behavior that intense competition can attract. Well done to 1st speaker Grace, 2nd speaker Hamilton, 3rd speaker Maeve and team advisor Aliya on trying their best despite losing the debate.

A big thankyou to Delilah’s dad, Simon, for providing transport for the away team. Also, thanks to chairperson David and timekeepers Oliver and James who were the meeters and greeters.

Peer Support

This week the focus was on step 2 of the model, Plan. In Peer Support children learn the need to develop a range of coping strategies and be creative in drawing on these when planning responses. Responses include persevering, seeing the positive side to situations and engaging in activities they enjoy as a distraction for a short time.

Encourage your child to talk with you about strategies they could use as difficulties arise.

    OFFICE NEWS

    Lost Property

With the recent cold weather changes students are taking their jackets on and off throughout the day and many are ending up, unclaimed, in lost property!

Office staff have been endeavoring to return items to students where the owner's name is clearly marked but many items have no name or the name of a student who has left the school.

Please clearly mark your child's hats, jackets, lunchboxes etc and encourage them to be responsible for their belongings.

    Thank you

Enrol Younger Siblings for 2026 Now!

Important information if your child travels to school by bus

Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services.

How can you help? Please remind your child to tap on and off and ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card) and remind them to tap on and tap off on every trip.

To apply for a school Opal card, visit https://transportnsw.info/school-travel-apply.  Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings.  Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.
