Drummoyne Public School

Term 2 Week 1 Newsletter - Friday 2 May 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Welcome back to Term 2! I hope you and your family enjoyed some extra time together over the Easter break - it’s been wonderful to see our students, refreshed and energised, settle back into school this week, which has already been a busy one with our ANZAC Day assembly on Wednesday and the K–2 excursion to Riverside Theatre today.

New ‘Flexible Furniture’ for Stage 1 and 2

Over the holidays, our school took delivery of new flexible furniture for Years 1–4, following on from the new furniture provided to Kindergarten and Years 5/6 last year. The new furniture includes pieces with wheels and writable surfaces, giving both teachers and students greater flexibility to use their learning spaces in creative and collaborative ways.  Our teachers were busy setting up their classrooms before students returned and it has been wonderful to see the students' enthusiasm and excitement as they explore and make the most of their vibrant new classrooms.

ANZAC DAY Commemorations

Our ANZAC Day commemorations have been a meaningful and important part of the start to Term 2. I was honoured to accompany some of our prefects at two services during the school holidays - Elizabeth and Delilah proudly represented Drummoyne Public School at the Five Dock RSL march and ceremony on Sunday 13 April, while Hamilton and Maeve attended the City of Canada Bay ANZAC Day Dawn Service held at Queen Elizabeth Park, Concord on Friday 25 April.

Before the break, David, one of our House Captains, also joined me at a book launch for Drummoyne’s Great War - a local history series about soldiers from Drummoyne who served in World War I. At our school ANZAC Day assembly on Wednesday, I had the privilege of sharing the story of one of the soldiers remembered in these books, Private Spencer Hayman. Spencer was a former student of our school, then known as Drummoyne Superior Public School. Spencer lived on Renwick Street, Drummoyne and served with the 3rd Battalion during World War I. He tragically died on May 26 1915 of wounds received at Gallipoli on the first day of landing, 25 April 1915. He was only 20 years old.

We were also honoured to welcome Major Barbara O’Keefe from Five Dock RSL, who spoke at our assembly. Barbara served as a nurse in the Australian Army and generously shared some of her experiences of service with our students.

It was wonderful to have some of our families join us for this special occasion, as we came together to reflect, remember and honour those who have served.

Sausage Sizzles & Superstars: Thank you to our fabulous parent volunteers

Finally, thank you to our wonderful P&C for organising the Democracy Sausage Sizzle on Saturday and also to everyone who has volunteered to lend a hand. A big shout out also to Belle, Tania and their wonderful team of volunteers who have been hard at work all week preparing beautiful gift bags for our Mother’s Day Stall.

Regards,

John Nguyen

Reminder - Violin and Viola Lessons starting at DPS in Term 2!

We’re thrilled to announce that professional 1:1 violin and viola lessons will be available at Drummoyne Public School from Term 2! A highly experienced tutor from the Inner West Institute of Music will be offering 30-minute lessons on Wednesday afternoons after school.

If your child is interested in learning a string instrument, or you’d simply like to find out more, come along to our Discovery Session in Term 2, Week 2 – Wednesday 7 May, from 8:30–9:30am. The Director of the Inner West Institute of Music, Victoria Jacono-Gilmovich, will be available to answer all your questions. This session will cover everything from lesson costs to how to source and properly fit a violin.

We’re excited to grow our vibrant string program, building on the success of our current string ensemble, which will make its debut performance at the Sydney Opera House in September this year!

    OFFICE NEWS

Important information if your child travels to school by bus?

From 24 February to 21 March 2025 Transport for NSW will be focusing on school student Opal tap data to help plan better bus services. It’s vital that your child remembers to tap on and tap off their Student or Child/Youth Opal card during this time – and every time they travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important? The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services.

How can you help? Please remind your child to tap on and off and ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card) and remind them to tap on and tap off on every trip.

To apply for a school Opal card, visit https://transportnsw.info/school-travel-apply.  Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings.  Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.
