Newsletter: Term 1 Issue 2

Principal's Message

Congratulations and well done to both Room 16 and Room 21 for their hosting of our recent assemblies! The confidence that is shining though as our students perform and speak in front of everyone with confidence, is certainly continuing to be a highlight. Thank you to the P&C for supporting our award winners with a morning tea.

Over the last few weeks, we have been busy! Creative Bytes have again been working with students from Room 21, 20 and 16. It has been inspiring to see our students working with advanced Technology. A massive thank you to BHP for their continued support with this program. Brand new Lego Spike kits have arrived in preparation for Term 2.

Our Year 2, 4 and 6 students have completed 2 weeks of swimming lessons. Whist the 2 weeks are very disruptive to the student’s normal school routines, swimming lessons are incredibly valuable. Thank you to the teachers for your daily dedication to ensure our students had this opportunity.

We participated in and recognised National Ride to School Day with many students participating in fun obstacle courses before school. This year, we even had a horse. Thanks, Maddi for entertaining everyone and letting the students have horse pats! A massive thank you to Woolworths Newman who provided the students with a fantastic selection of fruit.

A massive congratulations to our Year 3 and 5 students who have completed NAPLAN for 2026.  Students were asked every day to try their best. If they could say they did, then this is all we can ask of each and every student! We look forward to accessing and sharing the results later in the year.

Our staff have all had professional learning opportunities here in Newman. The feedback from teachers has been very positive.

Last Monday the teachers were available all day to carry out parent/teacher meetings. Thank you to everyone who took the opportunity to book and attend a meeting. If parents have any constructive feedback on the process, please email this through to Robyn.Hudson@education.wa.edu.au

We held a whole school fun mathematics morning for World Maths Day. Watching the older students take the lead to teach the younger students on the day was impressive. I think we have some up and coming teachers! Thank you to the parents who supported the morning and thank you to Mrs Keane, our Mathematics leader for organising this event.

We held our faction swimming carnival on Friday. What a brilliant day with students showing amazing sportsmanship. Congratulations to Parnka who took home the shield for 2026. Thank you to Miss Lynch for the work in putting together the carnival. We were very lucky with the weather, and it was a fantastic day!

An enormous thank you to everyone who kindly donated “easter goodies” to our P&C for the annual Easter raffle. Congratulations to the winners who will have plenty of chocolate to eat and easter bunnies to cuddle. 😊

Issues may arise during your child’s schooling, and these are more productively resolved if you raise them with the school directly, as early as possible. If you are not sure who to speak to, you can start with your child’s teacher. For some matters, it may be appropriate to talk directly to our administration team.

Newman Primary School staff value parents coming into the classrooms to support with student learning. This is a great partnership. If you would like to help out, please speak with your child's teacher to arrange a suitable time.

On a sad note, we will farewell Mrs Kap, our 2026 kindergarten teacher on Thursday. Mrs Kap will be relocating to Karratha to be with her husband who has moved for his work. We thank Mrs Kap for the work she has carried out at Newman Primary School over the past 1.5 years. We wish her all the very best for her future endeavours!

A process is currently underway in the hope of employing a new teacher for the commencement of Term 2.

With only 1 day until the end of Term 1, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful two-week break with your families. Stay safe and we look forward to seeing all staff and students back at school on Monday 20 April for another busy, exciting and educational term.

Faction Swimming Carnival

On Friday 27 March, our annual Swim Carnival was held at the Newman Aquatic Centre. The day was a fantastic success, filled with enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and house spirit.

This event would not have been possible without the support of our dedicated staff and parent volunteers—thank you to everyone who contributed their time and effort.

Congratulations to Parnka for winning the overall championship. We now look forward to the Interschool Swim Carnival on Friday 1 May, where our champion swimmers will proudly represent Newman Primary School.

Well done to all students who participated and gave their best on the day.

World Maths Day

On Thursday 26 March, NPS came together to celebrate World Maths Day with a morning full of collaboration, problem solving, and mathematical thinking.

Students across year levels participated in a range of engaging activities designed to make maths visible, interactive, and fun. From building numbers using place value materials, to exploring arrays through movement based challenges, and tackling creative geometry tasks, every activity encouraged students to think deeply and apply their skills in different ways.

A highlight of the day was the leadership shown by our older students, who took on the role of activity hosts. They guided younger students, explained mathematical concepts, and supported teams through each challenge. It was fantastic to see them using mathematical language with confidence while developing their leadership and communication skills.

We were also delighted to welcome parents into the school to observe the activities in action. Your presence helped make the day feel even more special, and we loved sharing our learning with you.

A special thank you to all staff for their support in making the morning run so smoothly, and to those who stepped in to help where needed. Your teamwork ensured a positive experience for all students.

Our student leaders also took on the role of journalists, capturing photos and videos throughout the event. We look forward to showcasing their report with the community soon!

World Maths Day was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate maths as something that is not only important, but also engaging, collaborative, and enjoyable 🙂.

Ride 2 School

On Friday 20 March, the Wellbeing and Resilience Committee hosted our annual Ride2School event. Students were encouraged to bike, scoot, or skate to school, promoting a healthy lifestyle while reducing car travel for the day.

As part of our Health lessons, students learned that by reducing car use for just one day across Australia, we can help save the equivalent of over 40,000 trees—an important reminder of how small actions can make a big difference.

To celebrate, fresh fruit was provided to all participants, thanks to the generous support of Newman Woolworths.

Attendance and Absences

Newman Primary School transitioned to a new system, all Attendance SMS messages will now come from a new contact NewmanPS.

The new system will notify parents, guardians, and caregivers of unexplained absences or late arrivals.

The new system started on the 4 June.  It will send parents an SMS on their mobile phone when their child is marked absent without an explanation.

Parents should delete the old Absentee SMS number to avoid confusion.

Parents will get this SMS with the link if their child is marked absent without explanation.  Parents should use this link to add attendance about their child's absence.  Please note that the link will be valid for only 48 hours.  Do not reply to this message via SMS as the school will not receive this.  The school will receive your response via the link provided.  Ensure the phone is connected to an internet data plan or has WIFI access to use the hyperlink.

If your child is absent again without prior explanation, parents will get a new one-time link.

If parents do not use the link provided, they can notify the school of their child's absence via telephone or email (newman.ps@education.wa.edu.au).

If you have any questions regarding the Attendance SMS Communication, please call 9154 3900.
