Principal's Message

Greetings parents and carers

This will be the final newsletter sent through the Audiri platform. Our school is finalising our transition over to School Bytes for all future communications. Parents and carers should have received a message yesterday with regard to this transition which included information on accessing the School Bytes parent portal.

AFTERNOON PICK-UP

Collection of children from the Russell Road gates in the afternoon continues to be an issue with the hold up of traffic along Rugby, Russell and Evescourt Roads. This area is a NO PARKING zone between the hours of 8:00 am to 9:30 am each morning and 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm each afternoon. During these times the following regulations apply:

You can stop for less than 2 minutes if you stay within 3m of your vehicle, if you’re:

  • dropping off or picking up passengers
  • loading or unloading items.

If you choose to arrive on Russell Road early and sit in your car for 2 minutes or more waiting for your child, you will not be acting within the above regulations and will be at risk of receiving a fine from the police.

Staff managing collection of children at the Russell Road gates do their best to expedite this process to keep cars moving. It is helpful for everyone if you move your car as far down Russell Road as possible when picking up your child/ren and move on as soon as you have collected them.

There are two STOP signs on Evescourt Road. Regulations around STOP signs are as follows:

When you approach a ‘Stop’ sign and ‘Stop’ line (single unbroken line), you must come to a complete stop. You must stop before the line, and as close as possible to the line.

Some of our parents and carers are either not coming to a complete stop at these STOP signs or they are stopping after the unbroken white line and stopping on the pedestrian crossing. These actions are outside of the regulations and will put you at risk of receiving a fine from the police.

I would like to again suggest to our parents and carers to park your vehicle away from the school and walk to the Russell Road gates to collect your child/ren on foot and avoid any infringements.

RETAINING WALL

Construction on our new retaining wall is well underway with demolition now complete and foundations of the graded steps being put in place. We are still on track for this new area to be complete before the end of this term and just in time for our school's presentation day. I will leave you now with a few construction snapshots as well as the original concept design to give you an idea of how this section of our playground will eventually look.

Yours in public education

Gregg Dreise Author Visit at NLPS

We were thrilled to welcome acclaimed Aboriginal author Gregg Dreise to NLPS last week! Known for his captivating storytelling and vibrant illustrations, Gregg shared his journey as a writer and the importance of cultural heritage. Through engaging anecdotes and interactive discussions, he inspired our students to explore their own creativity and appreciate the richness of Indigenous stories. His passion for storytelling not only entertained but also educated our students about Aboriginal culture and history. What an amazing experience for our students.

Interschool Regional Chess Finals

After qualifying earlier in the year, our amazing chess team represented NLPS at the Interschool Regional Finals at Newcastle PCYC on the 19th of November in the Knights division. The four person team consisting of Ahas P, Aayush G, Saksham T, and Hamish C played seven games each against many other qualifying teams from all over the Hunter region.

The students displayed dedication and good sportsmanship, and managed to secure first place to become the Hunter Regional Champions for 2024.

I would like to congratulate the team for an amazing effort and commend them on their impressive win.

Sport

NSW PSSA Cricket

Recently I was lucky enough to be selected to represent the Hunter region in the NSW PSSA Primary Cricket Girls Championships. The carnival was held over four days in Bathurst last week and our team played a total of seven games, winning four to finish fifth out of 13 teams in the championships.

As well as the cricket, which was an amazing experience and loads of fun, I got to meet 11 new friends who share my love of the game. After the cricket each day we had the best time because we were able to hang out together in the pool and at dinner. I bowled well and took a couple of wickets and was also fortunate to learn a lot from some of the more experienced girls too. I loved the whole experience, and I really hope I get to do it all again next year.
