Catholic Education Week

10–17 March 2024

Catholic Education Week will be celebrated in Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne from 10–17 March 2024.

This annual event is held to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools every day.

The theme for this year’s celebrations is ‘In the Light of Christ’.

Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and walk the way of the gospel to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.

There are 331 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne that educate around 114,000 students and employ more than 16,000 teachers and staff, and most will celebrate Catholic Education Week in some way.

It will be a whole school celebration, creating an opportunity for all the children to witness and be part of  the preparation and ceremony. In this way the children are able to support their fellow students and gain a better understanding of the importance of the Sacrament.

It will begin with Reconciliation activities during the mid morning, followed by a whole school shared lunch.

In the absence of Fr Gerard, Fr Brian Kelty has kindly accepted our invitation to celebrate the Sacrament with our students.

Over the next few weeks, the Reconciliation candidates will be preparing for their Reconciliation Sacrament at school and practicing the prayers, actions and readings in order to feel comfortable and prepared for this special occasion. all parents are very welcome to attend this Reconciliation prayer celebration.

Building Ramps

STEAM - ‘How Things Move.’

Today the Years Foundation - Three students experimented with making ramps and used cars, balls and mini skateboards to race down each ramp.  They asked questions about the effects of different sizes, weights and shapes of each object, predicted the outcome and then checked results.

Students used the Science of motion, Technology to watch a video about force and motion, English to explain their findings verbally and in written form, Art to create a unique ramp and Mathematics to measure the height and angle of each ramp.  An important element to STEAM is the joy of working with a partner as you both brainstorm ideas and support one another to complete your design instructions, before presenting them to the group.

The Easter Triduum: Entering into the Paschal Mystery

Through this yearly cycle, the Catechism of the Catholic Church explains, "the various aspects of the one Paschal mystery unfold"(CCC 1171). The Easter Triduum holds a special place in the liturgical year because it marks the culmination of the yearly celebration in proclaiming the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Latin word triduum refers to a period of three days and has long been used to describe various three-day observances that prepared for a feast day through liturgy, prayer, and fasting. But it is most often used to describe the three days prior to the great feast of Easter: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday and the Easter Vigil. The General Norms for the Liturgical Year state that the Easter Triduum begins with the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday, "reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil, and closes with evening prayer on Easter Sunday" (par 19).

Just as Sunday is the high point of the week, Easter is the high point of the year. The meaning of the great feast is revealed and anticipated throughout the Triduum, which brings the people of God into contact — through liturgy, symbol, and sacrament — with the central events of the life of Christ: the Last Supper, His trial and crucifixion, His time in the tomb, and His Resurrection from the dead. In this way, "the mystery of the Resurrection, in which Christ crushed death, permeates with its powerful energy our old time, until all is subjected to him" (CCC 1169). During these three days of contemplation and anticipation the liturgies emphasize the sacrificial death of Christ on the Cross, and the sacraments of baptism and the Eucharist, by which the faithful enter into the life-giving Passion of Christ and grow in hope of eternal life in Him.
