From the Principal

2024 Classes

We are currently organising classes for the 2025 school year. If you know your child / children will not be attending Lihir International School in 2025, and you have not yet informed Cathy or myself, please let us know as soon as possible, so that year level numbers and class organisation can be finalised. 2025 classes will be announced in week 10.

Awards Night

In the last week of this term, on Wednesday 4 December, the school will host its Awards Night. The evening will consist of various awards for each class and feature class concert items. Further information regarding the Awards Night will be disseminated in coming weeks.

School for term 4 will finish on Thursday 5 December at 12.00pm.

Year 8 and 10 National Exams

This week, our year 10 class sat for their Lower Secondary School Certificate Examinations. Congratulations to all students for their diligence and preparation towards these exams. Thanks to Mr Kiapkuli who was our external invigilator for the exams. Thanks to the Year 10 parents who provided a lovely lunch for the students to enjoy on the completion of their exams.

The year 8 National Exams are in week 4, from Monday 21October. Our year 8s are currently very busy in preparation for these exams. 

Year 10 Camp and Work Experience

Following the year 10 National Exams, our year 10 class will head off on a Transition Camp to Kavieng for a couple of days. The camp is designed to prepare them for Work Experience and includes a visit to OLSH International Kavieng for an awareness on year 11 subject selections. Following this, the students will participate in a Work Experience program coordinated by Mrs Baiwan. This program gives the students a valuable taste of the workforce, prior to subject selection for year 11.

School Council Meeting

There will be a School Council Meeting on Thursday 31 October, commencing at 6.00pm in the Library. This meeting is for School Council members.

At LIS - Wellbeing Matters!

The Australian Student Wellbeing Framework supports schools to provide every student with the strongest foundation possible for them to reach their aspirations in learning and in life.

Under 8's Activity Morning

The Kindy, Prep and Year 1/2 classes will lots of fun next Wednesday, 16th October, at our Under 8's activity morning. It will be held from 8.30-10.15am at the basketball court and adjoining playground. Parents are welcome to attend and bring along any younger siblings to join in the fun activities that will be happening. Thank you to Mrs Collins, Ms Dovaston and Ms Saua for organising the event and also to our early years aides Ms Andar and Ms Kinkinteng. Thanks also to our year 9 students who will be helping out on the morning.

Term 4 After School Swim Program

Unfortunately. after school swimming lessons were cancelled this week due to illness. Thank you for your understanding. Lessons will recommence next week Tuesday. Please see below the schedule below.

Student Portfolios

A kind reminder to return your child's portfolio if you have not already done so.

Under 8's Activity Morning

On Wednesday of next week, 16 October, the early years classes (Kindy, Prep and year 1/2) will have an Under 8's activity morning. Parents and wantoks are welcome to join in with the fun and activities, along with younger siblings. It will be held in the basketball court, from 8.30-10.15am.

Parent Overviews

Last week, parent overviews were sent home to share with parents about the learning that is happening this term. Please contact your child's teacher if you did not receive an overview.

Friday Assemblies

Parents and friends are welcome to attend our Friday assemblies that commence at 8.10am on the basketball court. This week was the year 5/6 assembly and next week it will be the year 3/4 class.

From the Deputy Principal (STM)

Work Ready Program

This week, 18 trainees for the 4th and last batch of 2024 WRP trainees commenced their 8 weeks training on Monday. New applications for the WRP have been closed until further notice and as such, no new WRP applications will be accepted. Notice for the opening and acceptance of new applications will be sent in the new year.

Every Wednesday and Friday, former WRP trainees come into STM Campus and apply for vacant entry level positions as they become available, with the assistance of STM staff. A good number of former WRP trainees have attained jobs with Newmont as well as with various contractors. 

FODE

Students are continuing their studies at their own pace. NDOE Calander of events are observed and followed.

Eligible Year 10 upgraders will sit for their National Exams in week 4.

Remedial & Exam Preparation

This Saturday morning remedial session will be the final exam preparation session for Grade 8s. There will be no after-school remedials next week.

 I did my Gr. 12 at Lihir Secondary. After that, I did my upgrade 12 studies at Nimamar Franchise Centre.
