Reynella Primary School Grapevine

Term 3, Week 5 | 2024

From the Leadership Team

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As we continue to explore new frontiers in education, we’re excited to share how our school is embracing deep learning to equip your child with essential skills for the future. Central to our approach is addressing real-world and global problems, ensuring that learning remains relevant and impactful.

In an ever-changing world, it’s crucial that education transcends the confines of textbooks and classrooms. By tackling real-world and global issues, our students are not only learning academic concepts but also understanding their applications and implications in the world around them. This approach helps them connect classroom learning to meaningful contexts, making their education more engaging and relevant.

One of the most exciting aspects of our deep learning initiative is the opportunity for students to showcase their thinking through our annual whole school STEM inquiry. It is so important to give our children the chance to share their insights and solutions with an authentic audience. This process not only boosts their confidence but also helps them appreciate the value of their contributions to real-world discussions. When you comment on their achievements; their eyes light up!

This year we have been involved in designing solutions to many of the extra-terrestrial challenges of our time. Topics may include:

o   Should we continue to travel to space? How might we make space travel viable and/or sustainable into the future

o   How do we use place to our advantage today? How might we use space to solve future problems her on Earth? What are the challenges?

o   How might we overcome the challenges of interplanetary living? How do we avoid repeating the mistakes we have made here on Earth?

o   How do we currently use the international space station for scientific research? How might we improve the space station to meet our future needs?

To support our students to develop the skills to enable them to make meaningful contributions, our teachers implement various thinking routines designed to foster deep, critical and creative thinking. These routines guide students in exploring complex ideas, asking insightful questions and reflecting on their learning. By regularly engaging in these practices, students become adept at analysing problems from multiple perspectives and crafting thoughtful responses.

Our upcoming Pupil Free Day on September 6, will give our staff another opportunity to work together to further explore the critical role thinking routines play in building our capacity to think deeply based on the following concepts:

  • Learning is a consequence of thinking
  • Learning and thinking are as much of a collective enterprise as they are individual endeavour
  • Learning involves uncovering complexity and delving deeply
  • Learning is often provisional and frequently changes with time
  • Learning is an active process and involves getting personally involved
  • Questions not only drive learning but also are outcomes of learning

Our goal is to prepare students not just to absorb information, but to think critically and creatively about the world around them. Whether they are examining Innovative Infrastructure, exploring Reynella Relief Project options or investigating Liveability, our students are encouraged to question, analyse and innovate. This prepares them not just to participate in the world, but to shape it.

We invite you to support and celebrate your child’s journey when you visit our showcase. Encourage them to share the thinking behind their projects they have worked through; ask them questions – be proud. Your involvement reinforces the importance of their learning and helps them see the broader impact of their efforts.

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in the exciting educational journey that Reynella PS has been on. Together, we are nurturing a generation of thoughtful, informed and empowered learners ready to make a difference.

We look forward to seeing you all on Thursday September 19.

Learning with F7

This term, we have been busy with our STEM inquiry. We can’t give too much away, but we have been learning a lot about Mars, its terrain, atmosphere and weather. Also, we have been learning all about sustainable vehicles, especially solar powered vehicles. We have planned and designed a solar powered vehicle according to a set of criteria and have done lots of problem solving to make a working prototype. It’s been a bit hard with the cloudy weather recently. We are looking forward to sharing them with you at our STEM showcase in week 9.

Book Week Parade - Friday 23 August

The Reynella Primary School Book Week dress up and parade will be on Friday 23 August during Book Week.

Be inspired by the theme or dress as a character from a story or book! Students, families and staff are invited to dress up.

Parents are welcome to watch the parade at 10:15am in the amphi-theatre dependent on the weather!

We also have a Coffee Van out the front of the school today until 4pm. Welcome Chloe from Hay There Coffee!

MultiLit Programs

At Reynella Primary School, we have a commitment to ensuring that all students excel in their literacy skills. As part of that commitment, we offer the MultiLit Intervention Programs to support children who are struggling in this area.

What is involved in the MultiLit Reading Intervention Program?

Students in the MultiLit Program participate in 4 x 45 minute sessions, working in a small group of up to five children with an SSO (Mrs Desi Gonis and Mrs Louise Quinn) each week. In these sessions, students receive explicit instruction to support their phonological awareness and language development.

We feel very privileged to offer the MultiLit Program at Reynella PS as it is an evidence based program that also increases student confidence with their reading skills. All children who have been offered a spot in the program for term 2 would have received a letter in the past fortnight.

If you would like further information about this program or have any other questions or queries, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or Anthony Parina.
