Letter from the Principal, Kelli Johnston

Dear Families,

At the commencement of this year SJB began Professional Learning in the MACS Vision for Instruction as part of the MACS 2030 Strategic Plan Forming Lives to Enrich the World.  Grounded in cognitive science, Vision for Instruction identifies the most effective teaching methods supported by evidence of their positive impact on student outcomes. At MACS, we have high expectations for every learner in every school, and all MACS teachers will be supported by the system to implement these practices.

As a school we are working closely with our MACS regional consultants to reflect on the strong educational practices already in place at SJB, along with how we can further refine and enhance our practices in alignment with the Vision for Instruction. Our MACS regional consultants continue to work in partnership with SJB through attending School Improvement Team meetings, Professional Learning Team meetings, planning with members of the school leadership team, along with leaders attending offsite professional learning networks. This is an exciting time for us as a school as we continue our work steeped in research and evidence base Learning and Teaching across all facets of the curriculum.

Vision for Instruction is the outcome of many months of work involving teachers, leaders and educators across the Archdiocese and around the world. MACS has released a Parent Guide to the Vision for Instruction.  Please see the attached flyer to gain an understanding of the MACS Vision for Instruction, along with an understanding of the direction of all Catholic primary schools in the Melbourne diocese.

R U OK? Day

Last Thursday we gathered as a school in prayer for R U OK? Day. This was an opportunity for us to gather in reflection and solidarity as a community to support and check in on one another.

As we come towards the end of a busy term it is timely to find patience, understanding, inclusivity, support and check in on each other.

We ask all our families to support each other and our students in the final week of the term. This is the prime time to ask R U OK?

We thank our Year 3/4 students for their outstanding presentation and support of our school in the presentation of their prayer service.

Term 3 Optional Parent/Teacher Interviews

This week we have the Optional Parent Teacher Interviews taking place on Wednesday afternoon. 3/4SJ will have their interviews this afternoon. The optional interview is an opportunity to touch base with your child’s teacher should this be required. This may be for either social or academic purposes.

The Year 5/6 optional interviews will take place in the main building.

Please note that if you have a PSG to discuss your child’s progress a Parent/Teacher interview is not required.

PSGs

We thank all families for booking PSG meetings where required.  As a school we greatly value our partnership with families and working together to provide the best possible outcome for our students.

PSGs occur over three days each term in which a significant financial investment is made by the school in the employment of CRTs to release staff from face to face teaching to attend PSG meetings.  It is important that families honour their scheduled meeting time and avoid cancellation.

Division Athletics

We wish students who were successful in progressing to the next level of Athletics all the best for Wednesday 18th September.  We wish the following students all the best for a great day of fun and competition

Nishala A, Max F, Jenna G, Cooper K, Zaylen L, Thaaruni S, Henry W, Amelia R, Olivia H, Sebastian R, Teague D

Out of Hours School Care

As the commencement of the school building approaches the time has come for OHSC to be relocated.  OHSC will be in operation in the school hall for the period of the building program. OHSC will operate in a section of the school hall close to the kitchen. We ask families to support students in their understanding of the areas of access in the hall throughout this period of time. As of Monday 16th September OHSC will operate from the school hall.

Staff Leave - Term 4

At the commencement of Term 4 we have Mrs Sue Cahill and Mrs Angela Cavarra taking a period of LSL. Sue and Ange have contributed many dedicated years of service to education and specifically SJB.

Mrs Renee Armstrong will also be continuing her period of leave.

We wish the ladies all the best for a wonderful time away. May your time away be one of rejuvenation and relaxation.

We are most fortunate to have some terrific regular CRTs supporting us through staff periods of leave.

MACSSIS Surveys

Family Surveys - Family surveys have been made available to all St John’s families.  Families can complete the MACSSIS survey anytime over a three-week window.   Families will be notified via an email of the online survey link to access the survey along with a unique password allocated to each family.

Staff Surveys - All staff will complete the MACSSIS survey with the same time frame as our parents.

Student Surveys - We will advise families and students of the delivery and implementation of student surveys.

Our community’s opinions are critical to understanding how our school is performing – MACSSIS is a key data source for guiding the ongoing work to improve our school.

All participation is invited, welcomed and 100 per cent voluntary. The surveys are not a test; they are an inclusive way to support the work we are already doing to improve our school. Everyone has the right to refuse to participate, or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during or after completion of the survey. Please notify the school if your child does not wish to participate.

If you would like more information, please contact the school.

Planning for 2025

In the beginning weeks of Term 4 the staff begin the process of putting together class lists for the 2025 school year.  The process will be completed with consideration given to:

  • The social and academic distribution of the children within the same level across classes

  • A gender balance in each class

  • Children’s requests for friendship groupings

  • Specific placement of siblings and children with individual needs, inclusive of emotional, learning, physical and behavioural needs

  • The social needs of children including the working relationships of all children and the desired separation of children who do not have a positive social or learning influence on each other

  • An awareness of teachers in the previous academic year.

To support the placement of our children we ask each child to name classmates who they work well with.  Children will be reminded to consider children from their current class and from other class settings.  Classes will then be structured with the aim to have each child with at least one nominated friend.  However if the class teacher feels that the choices are not in the best interest of the child then the child will be asked to nominate others.  Parents please note that it is sometimes commented that, ‘My child didn’t get any of their friendship requests from last year’. It is often in this situation that a child’s actual friendship group has slightly or significantly changed from October through to the end of the year and as a result the child feels that their requests weren’t taken into account.

With approximately 22 children in each class each child is provided with 21 opportunities to either further develop existing friendships or the opportunity to develop new friendships.  To be highly successful participants in our social, school and future working environments it is a most important skill to create new friendships each year, not be reliant on the same close friendship/s each year.  We make every effort to support our children by providing them with supportive environments but at the same time we wish for some form of challenge so that our children can further develop personal life skills by negotiating new friendships.

As detailed above, there is a significant level of care that goes into establishing the best learning environments, along with social interactions, for our children.

Parent Requests - Meeting with Leadership

We are aware that some parents may have valid reasons to have input into the placement of their children for the forthcoming year. Should there be numerous requests from parents then the ability for staff to make positive and professional judgements for the best learning environments for our classes is compromised.  Given this if parents have any relevant information that you believe is essential to the grade placement process, I invite you to make contact with myself kjohnston@sjferntreegully.catholic.edu.au  or Ursula DeCorrado

udecorrado@sjferntreegully.catholic.edu.au to share your thoughts for the 2025 year.  Should we need to gain greater clarity on the request as made we will make contact with you to make an appointment to share your thoughts or concerns.   We will evaluate all requests and make a professional decision on the placement of the child in question. The final decision rests with the school.

‘Teacher Shopping’ -  At SJB School we are blessed with a highly skilled and enthusiastic staff team and we are confident that all teachers will meet the needs of your children. Parents making requests simply as ‘Teacher Shopping’, without any foundation, may not necessarily receive their requests for the new year.  The reference to ‘teacher shopping’ means that, for example, parents have heard positive comments about teachers in the school from other parents and think that teacher may be good for their child.  Likewise a sibling may have had a teacher previously and a parent wishes for their next child to also have that teacher.  We would love to meet all requests but there are other elements around class placements, as detailed previously, which may take priority over a request as such.  As stated above, parents are invited to meet with leadership to discuss thoughts that may be pertinent to 2024 class placements but we ask that you take on board all of the above information before making your request.

Classes for 2025

As we plan ahead for 2025 classes, we ask any families who know that they will not be returning to SJB in 2025 to inform the school as soon as possible. principal@sjferntreegully.catholic.edu.au

Year 3/4 Rosary Blessing

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Fr. Thomas for blessing the rosary beads our Year 3/4 students made earlier in the term. This meaningful ceremony was a special opportunity for the students to deepen their understanding of prayer and devotion. The blessed rosaries will now serve as a valuable reminder of their faith as they continue on their spiritual journey."

Mini Vinnies Winter Appeal - Term 3

Last week saw the final stage of our St Vinnies Winter Appeal with the collating of toiletry items. Our Social Justice Leaders and Mini Vinnies team collected all donated items from each classroom and set these out on large tables to sort into family packs. A total of 31 family packs were created with shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant and shaving, nail and hair products. A huge thank you to all our families for the generosity shown!

At Friday's School assembly Peter and Teresa Finn of SVDP Ferntree Gully graciously accepted our contributions and continue to be astounded by the caring and generous nature of our community.

Thanks once again.
