Principal's Message

Dear Community

What a busy week of swimming lessons we have had! It has been great to see the students participating with lots of enthusiasm, and trips to the pool were certainly most welcome as the weather warmed up this week.

Out of Hours School Care

This week, the tender process for our Out of Hours School Care Provider was completed. The licence for 2024/2025 has been awarded to Camp Australia. Parents currently accessing the service through Mulberry Tree have been informed that they are no longer continuing in the role. The Camp Australia will be providing more information on their program and how to enrol over the coming weeks, after the details of the tender are finalised.

We would like to thank Mulberry Tree for the service they have provided to us over the past years. They will continue to be an integral part of the Scarborough Community through their childcare centres in our area.

Cyber Safety

Unfortunately, we have had several instances reported to us of unkind and inappropriate behaviour from some of our students in chat groups and on social media platforms. Whilst this is occurring outside of school hours, it can affect the wellbeing of students during school time as well, as it can lead to school not feeling like a safe and welcoming environment for them. Please read the information below from the E Safety Commissioner and click on the link provided if you would like more information.

When are they ready for social media accounts?

Both the physical age of your child and their level of maturity and resilience can affect their ability to have positive experiences on social media.

Each social media site and app has its own criteria for minimum age requirements. Most require users to be at least 13 years of age before they can register, although some sites are created especially for children under 13.

Generally, the 13-year age requirement is not necessarily because the site is unsafe for children to use but to comply with a US law — the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA), which prevents collection and storage of personal information from children under 13 years of age.

What are the benefits and risks of using social media?

The eSafety Guide includes information about the different benefits and risks associated with how social media is used. These include:

  • anonymous communication
  • content sharing
  • encrypted communication
  • gaming
  • in-app or in-game purchasing
  • live streaming
  • location sharing
  • messaging/online chat
  • online relationships
  • photo video/sharing
  • voice chat
  • video calling

Capital Works

Our Capital Works project is starting to progress quite quickly now, with the following being worked on over the next few weeks:

  • scaffold removal
  • stair balustrades and art screens
  • cabinetwork
  • windows & door frames
  • solar power
  • tiling
  • painting
  • flooring commencing
  • reticulation & landscaping commencing

I can now officially confirm that the last day students will be on Wednesday December 13 (not 12 December as previously anticipated), to allow staff 2 days at the end of term to prepare for the move.

School Board

Our School board met on Wednesday evening and discussed the progress of the Capital Works Project as detailed above. They also endorsed the Booklists, Contributions and Charges and School Development Days for 2024, all of which will be communicated and distributed before the end of term

Please keep an eye out in the next newsletter for the nomination process for some Parent Representative positions that may become available in the new year.

As always, if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to call, or email me on Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au

Voluntary Contributions

A big thank you to all families who have already paid their contributions. Your family’s contribution will go directly towards the purchase of resources and consumables needed in the provision of learning program activities.

Salvation Army Christmas Appeal

We all know Christmas is a time for joy. But for those doing it tough – it is often challenging, heart breaking and isolating. Last Christmas, The Salvation Army provided around over 64,000 hampers as well as 26,000 gifts to individuals and families in need. As cost of living increases continue to impact communities across the country, our support is more important now than ever. Scarborough PS is holding its annual food and gift drive again this year to help The Salvation Army make sure no one is left in need this festive season.

Please donate new items only and place them unwrapped under the Christmas tree in the front office. We will be collecting items from now until the last Tuesday of term. Any queries, please see the office, or email Chaplain Nikki on nicola.harvey@education.wa.edu.au

P&C News

Hello SPS families!

We hope your kids have enjoyed swimming lessons the last fortnight and that you’ve got a relaxing weekend ahead to recover!

2024 PLANNING

Just a reminder that we are holding a planning afternoon for 2024 on Sunday 26 November at 3:00pm at Beecroft Park, City Beach. It would be lovely to see some new faces and hear some fresh ideas! If you are unable to make it but have some suggestions, don’t hesitate in emailing us on the details below. Kids are welcome!

CANTEEN LATE ORDERS

As communicated on Audiri earlier this week, please ensure your lunch orders are in by 8:30 am on Friday as we are unable to process orders past this time. If you forget to order by 8:30 am, please organise your child’s lunch from home or elsewhere. In emergency situations, a simple sandwich will be provided by the front office as already happens on non-canteen days.

NEXT MEETING

Our next General Meeting will be held Tuesday 21 November, 2023 at 6:30 pm in the school library. It is a great opportunity to find out what is happening, make suggestions and get an update on the progress of the new build. All welcome, we would love to see you there.

If you would like to be added to our mailing list to receive the agenda and minutes for our meetings, or have a suggestion, send us an email - scarboroughprimarypc@gmail.com.

These are green stretchy skirts with black bike pants underneath and $18 each. Come and get some for summer!

If you have any unwanted items, please donate them to the uniform shop on Wednesday mornings, or to the office during school hours.

Emailed orders will be delivered to your child’s classroom or left at the office for collection. Please indicate on the form.

CANTEEN

We have been able to set up a canteen volunteer group so Laura, our wonderful Canteen Leader, has a few parents that are trained up and can help once or twice a term. There is always space for more volunteers, so if you would like to help out, please get in contact with Laura or Teneke (Canteen Coordinator).

The time needed to volunteer is Friday mornings between 11:00 am -12:30 pm.

Please also note that all canteen orders need to be placed via QuickCliq prior to 8:30 am on Friday.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOK

We continue to fundraise through the Entertainment Book. When you purchase the Entertainment Book, a portion will go to the P&C.

Order your membership here https://www.entertainment.com.au/orderbooks/86y129

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE

We will continue to fundraise through the Containers for Change initiative. The Containers for Change bins can be found at the school entry at Hinderwell Street near the Room 9 Heritage Building. Keep on bringing those empty cans and bottles to support the P&C! Please note that we have previously given the wrong scheme ID, so double check next time you’re donating that it is the one above.

THESE BINS ARE NOT FOR RUBBISH BUT FOR ELIGIBLE EMPTY DRINK CONTAINERS ONLY, THANK YOU!

Alternatively, if you wish to donate at a refund point of your choosing you can quote our Scheme ID C10284773. If you prefer to attend a Reverse Vending Machine location, please use the barcode at the top of the P&C news. This may be your preference if you have a larger donation and be rest assured that the money goes back to the P&C.
