As Term 3 rolls on, so do the many wonderful learning experiences and opportunities that make up this exciting time of year. Hot on the heels of our sports and STEAM festivals, we moved straight into this year’s Book Week, suitably themed “Reading is Magic!” A huge thank you to parents and carers for supporting our students to participate so actively this year. We had the razzle-dazzle of the parade on Monday, teacher book readings throughout the week, competitions galore, and a brilliantly decked-out library! The ‘magic’ was absolutely everywhere, ensuring that our students felt the richness and importance of reading. This amazing opportunity would not have happened without the extremely hard work of our English Committee and a few extra friends. Special thanks to Clare Etherington, Di Idle, Sasha Key, Emma Johnson, and Melinda Cockerill for putting in the bulk of the work (with great support from all other staff). What a team! While the official week has now passed, our students are still looking forward to our author visit from James Foley who will be joining us in Week 10.
Other learning experiences over the past fortnight include spectacular performances by the Yirra Yakkin Theatre Company. Students from Pre-primary to Year 6 enjoyed Boodjar Kaatijin, a story about Koorlbardi (Magpie), Weitj (Emu), Nyingarn (Echidna) and their koordah (friends) as they journey through Noongar Boodjar sharing stories of how the land was created. It was also great to see our students engage so respectfully, participating fully when given the opportunity, and asking some very thoughtful and relevant questions to the young actors at the end.
Our 2024 Robocup Jr. representatives also participated in the State Finals over the past weekend at Newman College. This year, we had four teams of Year 5 and 6 students involved in several different events, some completely new for CPS. While we did not receive any placings this year, our students represented the school proudly over the two days, enjoying making connections and learning with and from students from other schools, soaking up the atmosphere of the bustling competition, and simply having fun solving problems with their teammates. Well done to the teams! While competition was extremely fierce this year, you have laid the groundwork for our future CPS teams to reap the rewards at next year’s events!
Finally, don’t forget that our classrooms will be open on Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. (until 6:30 p.m.) for our 2024 Learning Journey. There is a buzz (and a lot of mess) around the school as students make final preparations, ready to proudly show off their achievements and highlights of their learning year so far. It is always such a positive, high-energy night, so make sure you get down and join in the festivities on Tuesday.
Outside of the classroom, we also have a very busy social calendar, with multiple events on the horizon. We had the pleasure of having a couple of DUCKs, Daniel Romano and Rubin Kuppusamy, at our assembly last week, sharing the winners of the Camp Out poster competition. While we look forward to hosting the 2024 Camp Out, be on the lookout for registrations very soon. Don’t forget the DUCKs will be on the tools at Bunnings Innaloo this Saturday, cooking up a sausage storm while raising money for the P & C. Please make sure you get down there if you are in the area and buy a sausage or two.
Final organisation is also well underway for the Colour Run/Lapathon in Week 9. We hope that students and families are getting active in preparation, organizing sponsorship, locating those ‘whites,’ and doing lots of running! Don’t forget to remind your kids that more laps mean more chances to win a fantastic prize at our end-of-term Lapathon Raffle assembly!
We sincerely thank our very active and supportive P & C, including the DUCKs, for their tireless work in building community while also supporting the school in providing the best opportunities for our students.
Many of you may have seen the call for a new CPS School Board member on Monday. We are on the lookout for one new member, with a parent position about to become vacant. Please find the post in Audiri for information on the role and how to join our dynamic team.
Finally, it is Education Assistant Appreciation Week next week. I’m sure you are aware of the saying, “It takes a village,” so it is important to acknowledge the hard work and expertise of our assistants as they play such a vital role in supporting our students to grow and learn. We are very lucky to have our EAs at CPS and are looking forward to celebrating their significant contributions. Be sure to check out our EA Profiles below to get to know them even more, and join in making them feel special next week.
