St Joseph's Catholic Primary School Wandal Newsletter

4 October 2023

Bernadette Brennan - Principal

Returning to school is a highlight of the term. Watching everyone greet each other and share their holiday adventures brings happiness and uplifts the spirits. This term we welcome nine new students to Wandal. We hope they feel the spirit of this beautiful community and I’m positive everyone will support their transitions. The 2024 Prep children and parents will be visiting for their Orientation Day in the upcoming weeks. This coincides with the Year Six transition day to The Cathedral College and the current Preppies will have a day in Year One.

Through conversations with the Parents and Friends Association, Catholic School Parents Queensland and general parent discussions, we are proposing to move the focus of the P&F from that of a fundraising and events coordination group. The role of parents in the success of a child’s education is critical and often leads to the greatest educational outcomes. Understanding that every family is unique and can contribute to a child’s education in various ways opens the opportunity to reinvigorate the way our parents connect with the school, sharing the responsibility to improve student learning and engage in the children’s learning. The upcoming challenge is how to enact change. In the coming days, the community will be invited to Parent Engagement Sessions. These are an opportunity for a brainstorming discussion about the proposal for change and an open invitation to share thoughts, and visions and possibly discover some hidden gifts and talents in our school community.

Swimming lessons commence next week, for five weeks and then we will hold a twilight swimming carnival on Tuesday, 14 November commencing at 5:00 pm. Student nomination forms and more information will be distributed in the upcoming weeks.

To stay up-to-date with what is happening at school, please check the EVENTS tab on the school app, your Parent Lounge account or the Weekly Notice.

Have a great week

Gospel Reflection

Jesus calls us to conversion.

Jesus continued, ‘The man then went and said the same thing to the second who answered, “Certainly, sir,” but did not go.’  (Mt 21:30)

Jesus tells a little story about two brothers. One said ‘Yes’, but never did anything. The other said ‘No’, but then had a change of heart and did what was required. Jesus loved the brother who came around. He was very hard on the one who said, ‘Yes’ but did not ‘walk the talk’.

Which character do you relate to in the Gospel story and why?

October is World Mission Month

October is World Mission Month, where we are called by Pope Francis to celebrate global mission with our “Hearts on Fire, Feet on the Move”.

Catholic Mission is Pope Francis’ official agency for global mission, and each year, we are invited to be a part of this call to action.  This year we are raising awareness and funds for projects in Timor-Leste.

Learner Disposition

Our focus disposition is currently being a reasonable learner.  Although this term has some unhelpful connotations (reasonable almost being a synonym for mediocre), in this case we are talking about using the ability to reason successfully.  Being organized and able to make connections is the key to this disposition.

Term Newsletters

Please check the app this week for your class newsletters.  Although it is a short term, there is so much going on!

Assessments

All students in years one to six will complete both a PAT (Progressive Achievement Test) Maths and Reading assessment between now and the end of week four.  This is a key way we monitor ongoing learning and growth.  It allows us to target teaching and monitor progress.  There is no special preparation for these assessments, and they will take place at various times in the coming weeks.

Year One knows about reading

How clever are our year one students?

They know all about what makes a good reader.
