2025 Term 1 Issue #2

From the Principal

Dear families & friends,

Once again Term one is whizzing by with lots happening at school!

Our Inquiry this term 'Being Human' started with staff turning our whole school into a museum overnight, for students to enter the next day. This inquiry unit will be a longer one that will extend from this term into next term and be shared with families along the way. See some of the photos from the immersion into the world of 'Being Human' later in the newsletter, where you will see the looks of wonder, curiosity and exploration on childrens' faces. As staff we are looking forward to seeing where students take us on this journey.

Learner Expedition project

This year we have been selected as the only primary school in our portfolio of schools to be part of an exciting project with the Department for Education Innovative Learning directorate and thought leaders Gwyn ap Harri & Kate ap Harri, from XP schools in the UK and Ron Berger, from EL Education schools in the US. These leaders are highly recognised around the world as leaders in Inquiry based learning styles and techniques. They are working this year with the Department to increase educator knowledge in inquiry based learning. I was able to select two staff to attend the sessions over the year with myself, to be able to work with other selected sites from across the state. Sharni (Junior Primary reresentative)  and Laura (Primary representative) will be attending these with me, with our intent to come back to staff and develop our whole site approach to Inquiry. We thoroughly enjoyed our first day (Picture above) and feel very excited and fortunate to have been given this opportnity to be recognised more widely for the fabulous learning we do at Felixstow!

NAPLAN

Students in year 3 and 5 have begun their NAPLAN assessments in week 7 and will complete these in week 8. We are really proud of our students who just took these assessments in their stride like it was just part of their day. We know, and so do they, that this is just one tiny snapshot of who they are as learners and that there are many ways of demonstrating success as a learner every day.

Cheers Skye 😊

Felixstow Highlights

Welcome to the Felixstow Museum

Juniors with Sharni

Hi from Laura's Class (P1): Fringe Shows Student review by Adelaide

Steve's Class (P2) News

In P2, we’ve been developing our persuasive writing skills by debating whether International Women’s Day should be a public holiday. Students have been learning how to structure strong arguments backing up their opinions with evidence, and present their ideas clearly. We also had a fantastic excursion to the Adelaide Writers’ Festival, where we heard from inspiring authors and gathered new ideas for our writing. Another highlight was the “Felixstow Museum”, where we had great fun exploring various artifacts. In maths, we’ve been focusing on division, prime, and composite numbers, using problem-solving strategies to strengthen our understanding. Chess has also been a firm favourite in class, It’s been a busy and productive time in P2!

PE and Health with Leigh

The last few weeks in health, we have continued our focus on positive relationships in the primary classes and building emotions and personal strengths in the juniors. In Physical Education, cricket and its related skills have been and will continue to be a focus for the next fortnight. We have an upcoming AFL program in conjunction with the SANFL and AFL towards the end of the term, so keep an eye out on Audiri for more information.

Resource Pod - Library News

The Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premiers Reading Challenge is a literacy engagement program that was introduced by the Premier in 2004. Its aims to encourage children to read more books, to improve literacy skills and to just enjoy reading. The challenge requires children to read 12 books from the start of the school year until early September. Children who complete the challenge are then awarded a certificate or medal depending on the number of years they have participated. For more information see the attached brochure or go to the Premier’s Reading Challenge website: https://premiersreadingchallenge.sa.edu.au/

PRC at FPS

The Primary class students can begin the Challenge from Day 1. Forms can be downloaded from the above link. If you have a problem accessing the form then paper copies are available from school. The Juniors class will receive their forms in Term 2. The final day of the Challenge is in Term 3, week 7. Record sheets must be handed in to Kelly, Gillian or your child's class teacher no later than this date and can be handed in any time before if the student has completed the Challenge. Awards are given to students who have completed the Challenge (once the school has received them) at a Ban Ba Ban Bayla in Term 4.

Breaktime Activities

The Resource Pod is now open for one breaktime a day, offering students a variety of activities to participate in or just a safe space to relax and read a book. We will be holding some themed sessions in the near future and welcome any suggestions the students may have.

Borrowing/Returning Books

Students have the opportunity to borrow books from the Resource Pod during scheduled class times and when the Pod is open at break times. All books are on loan for two weeks and the due date can be found on a slip attached to the inside back cover of the book or on a book mark. Please return the books by the due date or before if finished, as other students may be waiting to borrow them.

Scholastic Book Club

Students have received Book Club Issue 2, which has a great offer. Every student who orders will receive a $5 promotional credit to spend in issue 3. In addition, every purchase you make on Book Club earns our school 15% off the order value in Scholastic Rewards which we use to purchase more books for the library.
