What a busy week. There was so much to together as a school community learn and celebrate.

Semester 1 2025 Achievement and Attendance Ceremony

Congratulations to students who achieved Bronze, Silver or Gold acknowledgement for their academic achievement and high attendance. This ceremony is so important as it recognised and celebrates not just the achievement and attendance outcome alone but our student’s commitment, resilience and presence each and every day to achieve the outcomes that we celebrated.

Thank you to the many families that attended this event to share this celebration.

Parent/Carer/Student/Teacher Interview and Subject Selection Evening.

WOW what a well-attended and fruitful event, many thanks to our families for their attendance on a winters evening.  Subject Selection Evening provides our staff with the opportunity to present and discuss with parents/carers and students future pathway opportunities and the associated subjects that will assist students to pursue their career goals.

During the evening Miles SHS very own Build Your Future Pathway model was presented. This model provides opportunities for students to create for themselves the future pathways they want to pursue.  The model allows for discussions with students to identify subjects that work towards their chosen future pathways.

Miles State High School also launched Expressions of Interest for the AgriTech Futures Pathway Program, this program is a pre-packaged pathway (subjects pre-selected) that identifies curricular and extra-curricular activities that will assist students follow a chosen future in the Agricultural or Technology fields.

Agri/Tech Future Pathways is just one program. Our many subjects on offer can assist students to build their own Future Pathways Program to pursue their own future pathways.

Support Staff Celebration Week

Many thanks to all our support staff (cleaners, teacher-aides, facilities, grounds admin and operations). Your roles, responsibility and commitment to our schools is evident every day. I know our whole school community appreciates the work you do. THANK YOU 😊

Take care.

From the Deputy Principal

Thank you to our support staff and all that they do here at Miles SHS.  Week 4 we had the opportunity to celebrate their contribution to the education of your students.

This week, we completed the information sessions for the cluster schools on their transition to high school.  A special day has been arranged for Wednesday 29th October for the current Year 6 students to attend Miles SHS and experience a day as a high school student.  A letter will be sent to the primary schools, inviting students to attend, so watch this space.  This day is an additional to the set 2-day transition scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday of Week 9 in Term 4.  We also completed the SET Plan for our current Yr 10 students entering Year 11 for 2026.  Thank you to parents and students for their attendance, as we work together to support your senior pathways.

Week 5 on Monday, we have the Council coming in to discuss work opportunities with them and then Tuesday and Thursday we have the Blue Edge Program starting again for 8 weeks.

Week 6 on Monday, the ADF will be here to discuss career opportunities for our students in Year 10 to 12.

Have a terrific fortnight

From Head of Curriculum

Week 5 is now upon us, how the term has flown by. We were excited to celebrate last semesters results with students and parents at our Attendance and Academic awards on Monday. It is always great to see so many of our students achieving in their studies. I would encourage all to be looking at their goals so that even more are there next time. Now is the time to be making changes that will make the difference in your results.

At the midpoint of our term we are starting the assessment process. Students will be starting their assignments and completing work in class to show how they are progressing. At this point in the term homework is really important. This means that your student should be studying work that they have completed in class and completing any unfinished work. You are also reminded that students have access to online learning platforms, such as education perfect and JacPlus. Both of these sites contain helpful hints on how to complete work they have been learning in class. This is learning that your student can access above what is been given by their teachers.  Work should also be accessible through the student portal or Qlearn. Please talk to your teacher for more information about how your student can access their work.

We have now also completed the subject information nights. Make sure that you are completing your SET plan and getting your subject selections into the school to make sure you get your first choice.

Good luck on completing all your work.

From Head Wellbeing and Engagement

At Miles State High School, our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework is at the heart of creating a safe, supportive, and high-achieving learning environment. PBL is not just a program – it’s a school-wide approach that sets clear expectations for behaviour, teaches them explicitly, and celebrates the positive choices our students make every day.

Our PBL approach is guided by our RISE values:

  • Respect – We treat others, ourselves, and our school environment with courtesy and care.
  • Integrity – We are honest, responsible, and accountable for our actions, even when no one is watching.
  • Safety – We act in ways that keep ourselves and others safe, both physically and emotionally.
  • Engage – We actively participate in our learning, show curiosity, and contribute positively to our school community.

Through regular PBL lessons, targeted activities, and recognition programs, students learn what these values look like in the classroom, playground, and beyond. Staff consistently model and reinforce these behaviours, creating a positive culture where everyone feels they belong and can succeed.

Celebrating success is a big part of our PBL journey. From verbal praise to RISE awards, we acknowledge students who demonstrate our values in action. This recognition not only rewards positive behaviour but also inspires others to follow suit.

When we all commit to Respect, Integrity, Safety, and Engagement, we build a school community where every student can thrive. Together, we RISE.

📌 The Importance of Career Planning for High School Students

High school is more than just classes, sports, and social events—it’s also a time to start thinking seriously about your future career. While it may seem early, planning your career now can make a big difference in the opportunities you have after graduation.

🧭 SET Planning – Setting the Path for the Future

This week, our Year 10 students and their families engaged in the Senior Education and Training (SET) planning process. A huge thank you to all the students, parents, and staff who took part in these important conversations.

The SET planning process is a vital step in a student’s career journey. It helps ensure that each student is on a clear and personalised pathway toward their post-school goals. Through this process, students reflected on their strengths and interests and undertook subject selections for their senior years, aligning their choices with potential career pathways or further study options.

🌱 Why Start Career Planning in High School?
  • Clarity and Direction Career planning helps students understand their interests and goals. This clarity supports smarter decisions about senior subjects, extracurricular involvement, and future education or training.
  • Better Decision Making Exploring careers early means students can make informed decisions, helping them avoid unnecessary changes or delays after school.
  • Confidence and Motivation When students have a vision for their future, they are more engaged in their learning and feel empowered to take steps toward their goals.
  • Opportunities to Explore High school offers many chances to try new things. Career planning encourages students to seek out work experience, volunteer roles, or career talks to discover what suits them best.
  • 🔍 Tips for Students
    • Attend career expos, TAFE taster days, or industry presentations.
    • Get involved in extracurricular activities that help build skills for the future.
    • Keep learning about different pathways—university, TAFE, apprenticeships, and more.
    💬 Final Thought

SET Planning is not just about picking subjects—it’s about creating a vision for the future. Career planning during high school helps students stay focused, make better choices, and feel confident about their next steps.

We’re proud of our Year 10 students for taking this step and thank everyone who supported them in the process.
