New Lambton Heights Infants School

Term 1 Week 4 2024 Newsletter

We at New Lambton Heights Infants School acknowledge that we learn and play on the traditional country of the Awabakal people. We pay respects to Elders past, present and emerging, valuing their knowledge and seeking continued respectful relationships.

We recognise, respect and appreciate the traditional custodians cultural heritage, beliefs, relationships, and continued connection with the land, the skies and the waterways. This continent was and always will be Aboriginal land.

Our school vision

Kaayi

I am currently in the process of updating our Strategic Plan for 2024. This will be published on the school website by the end of Term 1. I thought I would share with you the school vision statement and how are addressing this in 2024.

Our vision statement was created in 2020-21 by staff and parents. It is as follows:

At New Lambton Heights Infants School we are committed to working in partnership with the whole school community to give students a strong start to their schooling life. We strive for excellence in all areas of teaching and learning. We challenge students to use their creativity, imagination and problem solving skills and nurture life long learners.

We endeavour to create a supportive environment, where students are enabled to do their personal best and achieve their goals. We aim to develop a sense of connectedness across the whole school community, supported by our motto, ' The Family School.'

This year, our focus on age appropriate pedagogy strongly supports the opening statement in the school vision. We are investigating the research and evidence that supports teaching and learning through a play based and project based model and are working with local pre-schools and another local public school to see this pedagogy in action. Our students are supported to achieve their learning goals through our analysis of student data and targeted instruction.  This work will continue in reading, numeracy and this year we will be improving our practices in teaching vocabulary skills.  We are continuing our work with the High Potential and Gifted Education policy and will be looking at this more closely through the Creative domain of potential and how it fits into the Aboriginal Education Policy.

As you can see, we have so many great activities and goals planned this year in our Strategic Plan and look forward to connecting with our community and working together to achieve these.

Speaking of community ... please come along to our community working bee. With the heat and the rain, our playground needs a big tidy up. Anna and Kelly will also be working on the mural. For more information please see the P&C report below.

Stay cool over the weekend!

Attendance Matters

If your child is absent for any reason, please contact the school by by phone or via Sentral  by 9:15am. After this time, a SMS is sent each day to any unexplained absences. If your child is late to school please accompany him/her to the office and ask for a late slip. If you do not accompany your child, please phone to office to let us know that your child is coming in late. It is important that all absences - full days and partial are explained. For safety reasons, we need to know that you know your child has been absent or late to school.

If you are intending on taking leave for travel (ie taking holidays outside of the school holiday breaks), please contact the school to complete a form at least one week before you intend to travel. Families are encouraged to travel during school holiday periods. If the form is not completed the absence will be recorded as unjustified, not as leave.

Come and join our working bee ...

P&C News

P&C Update

Hello everyone, We are on our way to Easter now and will need volunteers to help out with the planned activities. Details will be forthcoming in the next week. Please consider coming along to our next meeting on Weds 6th March at 7pm or join us at the working bee on Sat 9th March at 9am (details are below).

AGM

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 6th March at 7pm and this meeting will be the Annual General Meeting combined with a regular General Meeting. We value new members or attendees at any time. More volunteers help us to complete more for our school. Please come along and join in.

P&C 2024 Fundraising & Activity Survey

To guide and meet the needs of the school and the community we are asking you to tell us about the fundraising targets and ideas along with other activities and events that you would be interested in seeing the P&C organise. You can tell us what you think via the following survey: tinyurl.com/NLHISPCSurvey24. We have limited resources so we prioritise what we know the community are interested in. As always, we value any new members or volunteers to help with activities through the year and will advertise these opportunities as they come up.

Working Bee

The school and P&C will be holding a working bee on the school grounds on Saturday, 9th March from 9am until 12 noon. This activity will be a social day for families and children to come together on school campus to garden and perform a general tidy up of the school playground. During this time we may see our artist parents, Anna Scobie and Kelly Lees, touching up and finalising their wonderful mural on the basketball court. We will follow up our garden work with a sausage sizzle on the school grounds. We will post a sign up in the coming weeks so you can let us know if you can make it.

Snack Canteen

Snack Canteen is held every Friday during Second Lunch - between 12.45pm and 1.10pm. Most items cost $1.00 and these include flavoured milks, juice boxes, packets of chips, popcorn or grainwaves, and boxes of sultanas. For $0.50 students can purchase a frozen Quelch ice block. Students are restricted to purchasing two items. Each week we need two volunteers to run the canteen. Thank you to Hartini and Tiago for volunteering at snack canteen this Friday. To volunteer for a spot, please put your name down here: https://signup.com/go/uWWvMOR

Please be sure your volunteer's declarartion is complete at the office. You only need to do this once.

Skills For Learning

AT NLHIS, we explicitly teach pro-social and emotional skills that students need to learn and connect to others. As part of the Key Learning Area, Personal Development Health and Physical Exercise (PDHPE), we teach the students a program known as Second Step. Kindergarten and Year 1 are taught this program with Mrs Hughes as part of RFF and Year 2 are taught the program from Mrs Stanbridge. The language and strategies, however, are followed up by class teachers and used across the school in the classroom and playground.

The focus for Second Step in Term 1 is 'Skills For Learning'.

At our school, we all work hard to be the best learners we can be. One skill for learning is to listen with attention. When we listen with attention, our eyes are watching the speaker, our ears are listening, our  voices are quiet, and we’re still. This is the language we are using across the school to teach effective listening. We have also talked about using our attent-o-scopes. When your children are not listening ask them to put their attent-o-scope on! I've put some helpful ideas below. Let me know if it works!

Attent-o-scopes On!

We are strong and healthy!

Road Safety

Being on a busy road it is extremely important that we take care when arriving and picking up from Lookout Road. Please read the attached flyer with important road safety messages.
