Letter from the Principal, Kelli Johnston

Introduction

Third Sunday of Lent

O Merciful God, so often we feel dry in Spirit!

Come, Lord Jesus, quench our thirst for life in Your living love.

Be fresh water to our dry-ness, Unseal the living water of Your Spirit; to become within us an everlasting spring.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

During the Season of Lent we are called to unite against poverty through Caritas’ Project Compassion.

The students are currently learning about the inspiring stories of strength, challenge, disruption, journeys of isolation to independence and resilience from poverty to gaining valuable skills.

Families may like to login into the Caritas site with their children and explore ways in which we can support those living in poverty.

Managing Big Feelings Webinar - Carley McGauran, Psychologist

Last Tuesday Carley McGauran presented a most informative session on Managing Big Feelings. Carley presented practical tips for families to consider as we navigate nurturing and supporting our children through a realm of emotions and circumstances. We thank all families who joined Carley for the informative presentation. No matter how many times I listen to Carley there is always something to take away.

A key quote from Carley from the evening included:

“When little people are overwhelmed by big emotions, it’s our job to share our calm, not join their chaos”  L.R.Knost

Families who were unable to attend the session may like to view the recording of Carley’s session.  Please see the link below to view Carley’s session along with access to her toolkit:

Introducing “The Village Circle” – A Community Gathering – Hosted By Brooke W

As parents, many of us know the feeling that raising children was never meant to be done alone. It truly takes a village — yet in our busy lives, that sense of village can sometimes feel missing. As one of the parents in our school community, I would love to help create a small space where families can connect, support one another, and build that sense of village together. From this idea, The Village Circle was born. The Village Circle will simply be a relaxed and welcoming gathering for parents from our school community. It’s a chance to chat, share experiences, make new friendships, and support each other through the beautiful and sometimes challenging journey of raising children. Young children are warmly welcome to come along and play while we connect. There’s no pressure, no expectations — just an opportunity to build a stronger sense of community and support among the families in our school. If this sounds like something you’d enjoy being part of, I’d love for you to join me (and my daughter Elora-4yrs) for a cuppa on Fridays. Because parenting is easier, and far more joyful, when we do it together.

SJB Mother's Day Stall - Seeking Community Talents to Promote

Last year we had a wonderful response from families in the community sharing their talents with home made Mother’s Day gifts for our Mother’s Day Stall. These gifts were all beautifully made and were greatly enjoyed by all.

With Mothers Day soon approaching, our P&F team will soon commence ordering of some lovely gifts that will be available for purchase during our Mother’s Day Stall event. This year we would like to seek interest again from our creative community to see if anyone would like to showcase their talents by contributing any handmade items such as key rings, candles, chocolates, jewellery, bath salts or any other little gift ideas.

We would love the chance to recognise the talents of our community whilst contributing to a wonderful day. If you are interested in contributing please email the office at

office@sjferntreegully.catholic.edu.au by Friday 13th March. Your details will then be passed on to the P & F Mother’s Day Stall team.

    SJB Family Camping Weekend

We warmly welcome all families to come together for a weekend of fun at the annual SJB family camping weekend.  Whether it is cabins, caravaning, camping in a tent, the aim is to include all.

We would love to see everyone who is able to join.

For communication purposes families attending are encouraged to scan the code below. One of our team members will then communicate with the group in preparation for the weekend.

    Project Compassion Keyring Fundraiser!

The first batch of keyrings were placed in class tubs this afternoon for the teachers to hand out to students. If yours weren't there, please be patient, they will be coming soon. There is still time to order keyrings. Orders will close this Friday 13th March. More order forms can be found at the Office. Remember they are $2.00 each, with all money going to Project Compassion. Thanks for supporting our fundraising activity.

    NAPLAN

This week and next week our Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

The NAPLAN assessment tasks consist of the following assessment tasks:

    • Reading

    • Writing

    • Conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation)

    • Numeracy

NAPLAN is one aspect of St John the Baptist’s assessment and data collection used to monitor student progress and growth.  NAPLAN data is used in conjunction with school based data, student work samples and anecdotal records. All of this information is reflected upon in the planning of learning and teaching, as well as assessment and reporting.

We ask families to support our students as they prepare to undertake NAPLAN by encouraging them to give it their best.  This is all we ask of any of our students when entering all tasks.

MACS Family Survey - Have Your Say

Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) invites current families to take part in a short online survey about school choice and their experience as a MACS family.

The survey explores what influences families’ choice of Catholic education, what supports satisfaction and belonging, and what matters most at different stages of schooling. The findings will help inform future planning across the MACS system.

Your voice matters. By sharing your experience, you are helping shape the future of Catholic education for current and future families.

Community Gift - Yamaha Baby Grand Piano

A member of our local community has made contact with our school with a most generous and sentimental offer. Rachel has reached out to offer her family’s Yamaha Baby Grand Piano to a family who are able to give it a good home.  The piano has significant sentimental value to her and she would love to see it go to a family who will enjoy it.

If you are interested in giving the piano a new home please email the office.

Wishing all our students and families a wonderful week.
