Holbrook Public School

Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 9: Term 2, Week 7 - Tuesday, 6 June 2023

From the Principal's desk

Attendance

Congratulations to 3/4 Possums and 1/2 Kangaroos for outstanding attendance at school so far this term. We award a class with the highest weekly attendance rate a HERO (Here Everyday Ready Ontime ready to learn) certificate.

Even though we reward positive attendance habits at school, we encourage families to keep children at home if they are feeling unwell, ensuring they also provide the school with an explanation for their child’s absence. Each student should strive to be above 90% attendance (less than 20 days away each year), but being above 95% attendance (less than ten days away each year) is where great learning and positive school outcomes occur. Also, please note that if your child is not at school but representing the school at extra-curricular events, for example, chess competitions, excursions, and sports, these are recorded as school business and not as an absence.

Stay well, everyone; we know there’s more than enough sickness going around.

Staff Professional Learning

Ms Mullins and I will attend a Work Health and Safety course in Wagga to prepare our school for Emergency Management Planning, an essential aspect of all school environments for students and staff.

Miss Hemphill and Mrs Pontt travelled to Wagga to collaborate with other teachers at the annual Riverina Learning and Support Conference.

Next week, all staff at Holbrook Public School will be participating in professional Learning run by Teagan Sawyer from the Albury Learning and Support team around Understanding Behaviour.  This professional learning will provide an overview of the legislation, department policies, and priorities that underpin behaviour support. The training also looks at appropriate and inappropriate behaviour, factors that influence behaviour, and what age-typical behaviour looks like. Staff will be able to build strategies to respond to more challenging behaviours.

Sport

I want to thank Miss Hemphill for organising and running a successful athletics carnival last week at the Les O’Brien Athletics Precinct. It was great to see so many students competing in track and field events and achieving PBs (personal bests) in many different events. I would also like to thank all the school’s parents, families, and friends who supported our staff and students by coordinating age groups and assisting with events, and the fantastic P&C who coordinated a barbecue on the day. Without your support, we cannot run these events and provide excellent opportunities for our students. This is something I cherish about being a part of Holbrook Public School – the whole school community!

I wish all our students competing at the Riverina Cross Country next week all the best. I know you will represent our school well, compete hard and show great sportsmanship.

Kindergarten 2024

If you have a child starting Kindergarten in 2024 or know someone else who does, now is the time to start planning. We love receiving enrolments, either online (click on the link in this newsletter) or on paper (accessible through the office), so we can begin building relationships and connections with students and families. If you have any questions or want to visit our school, please get in touch with the office on 6036 2021.

P&C Meeting

The next P&C meeting will be in the school library or via Zoom on Wednesday, 21 June, at 7:30 p.m. All parents and citizens are welcome to attend.

School voluntary fees, which help towards the cost of educational resources for your children, are $35 per student. Payments can be made easily online on our school webpage.

There is no obligation to pay these fees; however, your contribution directly assists our students.

School car park upgrade

The construction of the staff and visitors' car park is almost finished, with the completion of the asphalt. All that is left to do is the line marking and the installation of bollards. Parents are advised that they can now collect their child from the Albury Street gate.

Information overload

We regret the overwhelming amount of information shared through Audiri and Sentral. We acknowledge that not all families have joined Sentral, so we will use both communication platforms until everyone is registered.

Afternoon Activities Groups

Starting this term, Holbrook Public School is running groups that allow students to practice and develop their social skills by participating in various games and activities that promote communication and connection. Over the term, students can participate in mixed arts and crafts sessions, gardening, games and Boccia.

Thanks to Mrs D, the school chaplain, and our fabulous SLSOs for running these sessions. Sessions will run on Tuesdays and Fridays for 40 minutes.

If you have any questions or concerns about these groups, please do not hesitate to contact me via phone or email.

Athletics Carnival - Friday, 2 June 2023

Thank you to the parents and carers, staff and students for making Friday’s Athletics Carnival a success! Much planning goes into ensuring these events can happen for our students, but they wouldn’t be possible without support from the community. From those helping with events, managing groups, and starting the races to the P&C for cooking the barbecue, we are very grateful.

Congratulations must go to all the students for their enthusiasm and effort on the day. Many of the teachers had their own story of great sportsmanship they had witnessed from the day – Jai Hughes running in the Snr Girls Relay for Lawson; Lucy Boers, Isabella Ingle, Bonnie Cronin, Arabella Pincott and Hailey Harrison running in the Snr Girls Relay for their respective houses; Brydie Laffan for running in the relay when she really didn’t want to; and Isabella Ingle for running in the 200m when she was feeling very nervous.

Records:

Congratulations to Ollie Cardile and Braxton McKillop, who broke records in the 1500m event. Ollie (5.41.96) broke Cooper Glass’ 2021 record (5.49.20). Braxton (5.45.26) broke Ollie’s 2022 record (5.50.74). Congratulations to Liam Mohr, who set the seated shot-put record with 2m and the seated discus record with 2.32m

Wonder Recycling Rewards for Schools

The Wonder Recycling Rewards for Schools program has been created to collect and recycle bread bags at school and earn points to spend on sporting equipment for the school. We are asking all families, and extended family members, to help us fill four collection boxes by Friday, 7 July 2023.

All we need to do is:

  • collect any bread bags (if they contained some type of bread and are soft plastic, then they are bread bags)
  • ensure they are free from crumbs so they do not contaminate the recycling process (no need to wash them)
  • fill up an empty bread bag with bread bags (squash in as many as you can), send the full bread bag to school and place it in the collection box (in the office foyer)

Please help us to help our environment and earn more (and possibly different) sporting equipment for our school.

Chrissy Lavis

Return and Earn

Please collect your 10-cent recyclable bottles, cans and fruit boxes and bring them to school for collection in our newly delivered big green drums.

Please ensure that these items are clean and free of food, liquid or other contaminates. This is a simple, easy way to help raise more funds for our students.
