Principal's Report

Hi everyone,

I’m sorry for the delay in this week’s newsletter, it has been a slightly disrupted week. I do have to thank each and every one of you for your assistance in following our relocation procedures and being patient with us while we got out the appropriate information. Last Thursday's and this Wednesday’s relocations went smoothly and it is a credit to our parent community and very well trained and practiced staff that the continuity of education could continue in these extreme circumstances.

There are a few classes running PYP units of Inquiry that are exploring how we can be the healthiest version of ourselves. The PYP gives students such agency and voice in their own learning. It has been great to see classes identify healthy food choices and look at how we can share this new knowledge with others. WATCH THIS SPACE!

A note went home last Friday regarding our upcoming School Council Elections. Forms are available from the front office for you to self-nominate or to nominate someone else. More information will be included in today’s newsletter. Nominations close at 4:00PM on Monday 4th March.

Next week sees our MMPS Athletics Carnival take place at Dixon Field, Gisborne. Students and staff will head down to Gisborne next Thursday the 7th of March to complete in a number of track and field events. If you are free and would be able to help volunteer on the day please let your child’s teacher know, we cannot run days like this without parent volunteers. Payment and permission is required through the QKR app. You can also sign up to volunteer on QKR as well.

We are rocketing through Term 1 and have roughly four weeks left! We have a busy finish to the term so please look after yourselves and let me know if you have any questions or concerns and we can make a time to catch up.

Many thanks,

Joe.

Smile Patrol - Dental Visit CANCELLED

After careful consideration and assessment of the current situation, it has become evident that Smile Patrol have not had enough enrolments to meet the minimum number of participants required to effectively run the program and provide the quality experience they aim to deliver.

Smile Patrol understand the disappointment this news may bring, especially to those who have expressed interest in participating. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. Our team has explored various options to try and salvage the situation, but unfortunately, none have proven feasible given the circumstances.

Once again, we apologize for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding in this matter.

School Council Elections

A school council plays a vital part in the running and success of a school. School councils have governance over areas such as Strategic Planning, Finances (including fundraising), Buildings and Grounds and Marketing. It is the role of a school councillor to be informed and represent the views of the parent body. We have three parent member positions vacant on the SC this year and one School Employee member position.

Please consider nominating (self-nominating) or nominating someone else for the role (the person you are nominating will need to agree and sign the nomination form). All nomination forms are available from the front office.

The nomination period will be open until Monday March 4th, 2024.

The parent electorate includes each parent of a student at the school, except those who are Department employees engaged in work at, and for, the school. A parent of a student at the school, who is a department employee but does not work at or for the school is included in the parent electorate. These parents are recognised on council as ‘Department employee parents’.

‘Parent’ includes a guardian or person who is liable to maintain or has the actual custody of a student of the school.

A person is ineligible for election or co-option to the school council if the person:

•    is or has been insolvent under administration within the last three years. Note: Insolvent under administration includes a person who is an undischarged bankrupt

•    is of unsound mind

•    has been found guilty or convicted of an indictable offence or an offence that would be an indictable offence if it had been committed in Victoria

•    is a registrable offender within the meaning of the Sex Offenders Registration Act 2004

•    is subject to any medical condition that makes them unable to fulfil the role of a council member

•    ceases to be eligible for election or co-option to their membership category.

Please contact me if you have any questions,

Joe.

This week in DigiTech

Today it was the Grade ½ students' turn to use our Sphero robots (after they saw the Preps using them last time, and they are a fierce bunch when in large numbers, I was too frightened to say no to the request)

As we have been looking at coding in our last class though, I thought we would make it a little tougher.

Instead of just driving them around, students needed to code the Sphero using a series of commands - which involved big words like heading, elevation, speed, and duration (we also learned about degrees for good measure)

Finally, I also threw some friendly competition into the mix, and each group had to try and code the robots to stop directly in my designated target (using the exact mathematical method of 'sticky tape on the floor')

You can see some of the action in the video link below.
