Term 2 - Week 4 - 22nd May

2025 - SCHOOL CALENDAR - Term 2

Principal

Frank Congedi

Dear Parents and Community Members,

I hope you are all doing well as we transition into colder weather. The children are now in the full school winter uniforms and by and large most children are wearing the correct uniform. I thank all the families that demonstrate commitment to ensuring that uniform standards are adhered to and if your child cannot wear the correct uniform please speak or email your child’s class teacher.

Performing Arts

The Year 6 children are preparing for Wakakirri each Monday afternoon and as part of our Performing Arts Program. For some of our children this may be a once in a lifetime experience of performing a 5 to7 minute Story Dance, yet for others it may be the beginning of a new interest in secondary education and beyond. For all our Year 6 children it will be a memorable experience.

The Years 3 to 5 children are also preparing for their concert in the last week of Term 2 at the Woodville Town Hall, and we will be having a matinee session and an evening session. I am strongly encouraging grandparents and other parents who are free during the day to attend the matinee session to ensure we have a good size audience at both concerts and alleviate evening ticket sales. The 9 classes in Year 3, 4 and 5 will each have their time to shine on stage as individual classes enabling parents to see their child performing more clearly this year.

Reading Every Weeknight

Many of our children are avid readers and many parents ensure that reading occurs every weeknight as part of homework but also promoting a reading pattern for their child. I have previously shared research conducted across 22 western countries that demonstrate high academic results if a child reads at least 15 minutes every day. Academic result further skyrocket if they read 30 minutes a day. I strongly encourage all parents to prioritise reading every night with your child or as children grow older create a time for family reading time. You may set your child up for success.

Designated Drop Off/Pick Up Zones

Thank you for all parents who are using the two Drop Off/Pick Up Zones for our school:

1.      Side Gate locate between the school and the Mater Dei Church.

2.      The 2-minute Drop Odd/Pick Up Zone on Ranelagh St at the back of the school.

These 2 designated safe zones to ‘Drop Off/Pick Up’ reduce the need for parents to find a park. For smooth flow, I encourage family members to remain in the car as the children independently get in the car.

It is important to know that the area in front of the school office is not a Drop Off/Pick Up Zone as we cannot block the pedestrian crossing in case emergency vehicles need to get through and that the opposite side of the road is a no standing zone in the morning and afternoon to enable east west traffic to flow.

As I end this week’s newsletter, I wish to acknowledge a number of families who have recently lost a loved one and my thoughts and prayers go out to you all as you navigate through a grieving time.

I also want to thank the parents and staff who can join us for Working Bee this Saturday 9 to 12 and thank you for all that you do. You are very generous community who continue to help build this school community.

Our Parish Priests

Last week 6LL invited Fr. Olek to their class for a discussion on the Easter Season. During the 40-minute session, the students had lots of wondering questions about love and the significance of Easter. Fr. Olek explained that Easter is how Jesus reveals his love, moving from words to actions from Holy Thursday to Good Friday. This prompted the children to reflect on when someone is faithful to their word and truly cares.

The children were excited to learn about the significance of places like Bethlehem, Galilee, and Judea in Jesus' life. Fr. Olek also shared that the 40 days after Easter, Jesus ascended into heaven and after 10 days he gifted us with the Holy Spirit to guide us. This event is celebrated as Pentecost. Fr Olek explained that Jesus’ love is expressed through the Spirit, which is like breath—essential for life. Just as we need breath to live, we need the Holy Spirit and a relationship with Jesus to connect with God.  Fire symbolizes the living spark and energy of the Spirit. How do you nurture your flame so that you continue to shine Jesus’ love onto the world?

As St. Teresa of Avila said, "Christ has no body now but yours, no hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world, yours are the feet with which he walks to do good, yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world. Christ has no body now on earth but yours".

Our community will end the Easter Season with a Pentecost Mass in week 7, Wednesday 11th June at 1.45pm for Year 2-6 classes and on the same morning at 9.15am, a liturgy for our Reception and Year 1 students. Hope to see you there.

Monsignor Minh-Tam celebrated his first Mass with our Year 5 students and their buddies. He also celebrated Family Mass on the weekend.

Family Masses

Our Parish/School Family Masses provide a wonderful opportunity for students to serve the Church through reading. Last year, a small group of students attended every 3rd Saturday of the month at 6pm. We hope that more families will feel welcome to join us and share in God's word together.

The Family Masses for this year are at Mater Dei Church, 6pm on:

·         Sat, June 14th

·         Sat, August 16th

·         Sat, September 20th

·         Sat, October 18th

·         Sat, November 15th

If you will be joining us please email student’s name and class to receive the reading before the Mass - jminorchio@whitefriars.catholic.edu.au

Indigenous Education News

At the end of the 2024 school year, our Indigenous students were lucky enough to participate in a workshop with David Booth form Imbala Aboriginal Performance & Workshops and Kristin Wohlers – Sculpture and Mosaic Artist.  The aim of the workshop was to find a way to display our Indigenous Heritage through exploring our school  virtues and developing indigenous symbols that would reflect these.  Our students listened and created with pride and joy.  Kristin then created our vision using Mosaics.  This beautiful piece of art work now sits at the front of our school.  If you have not yet made your way over to see it, please do.

Thank you,

Vicky Radetti

Parent Corner

Protecting Childhood

Welcome back to another term of Parent Corner.

Finding the right balance between structured activities and free play is challenging. There is a line that balances the competing demands of structure, growth, and enrichment with stress, financial costs, and protecting childhood. The problem is that none of us really knows where that line is until we’ve crossed it. It’s different for each child, and it changes as they mature and develop.

In this week’s Insight’s article, ‘Protecting Childhood‘, Justin talks about the importance of embracing childhood and allowing our children to simply play, learn and create; to sit quietly on the grass under a tree and stare at clouds; to experience the simplicity of childhood; and to simply be.
