Drummoyne Public School

Term 2 Week 9 Newsletter - Friday 27 June 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Semester 1 Student Reports

Semester 1 reports were sent out to families this afternoon, providing you with a comprehensive overview of each child’s progress and achievements so far this year. These reports represent a significant amount of work by our teachers – not just in the final weeks leading up to distribution, but throughout the semester. Teachers have worked tirelessly to ensure assessments are meaningful and aligned with syllabus outcomes, that data is collaboratively analysed and that marks are moderated across each stage to ensure consistency. Each report also undergoes a thorough editing process by the supervising assistant principal to ensure clarity and accuracy. I always enjoy reading through each report, as it gives me a unique window into every classroom and highlights the deep knowledge our teachers have of their students. The care, expertise and commitment of our staff is evident in every comment.

I’ve been pleased to see many of you taking advantage of the opportunity to book a time to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss their report and future learning directions during our upcoming parent-teacher interviews. These conversations are a valuable way to strengthen the partnership between home and school.

Looking ahead, the Department of Education has recently released updated guidelines for reporting to parents. As a result, we will be making some changes to the Semester 2 reports. Early next term, families will be invited to provide feedback on the current format and potential changes through a short survey. We look forward to hearing your thoughts as we continue to refine our reporting processes to best support student learning and parent engagement.

New School Jumpers Now Available

We’re excited to let you know that our new school jumpers are now available for purchase through the uniform shop! These jumpers can be worn instead of the current bomber jackets, or underneath them on particularly cold days. They’re warm, comfortable (speaking from personal experience!) and designed to match our existing uniform, helping students stay cosy, while maintaining a neat and consistent look.

We ask for your support in upholding our high uniform standards by ensuring students are not sent to school wearing non-uniform jumpers, jackets or coats. Wearing our school uniform helps our students to build a strong sense of belonging, pride in their appearance and school spirit. Thank you for your continued support!

Winter Soirée – Monday 30 June, 6:15pm (sausages from 5:30!)

Join us in the school hall for our Winter Soirée – now bigger than ever! Alongside our fabulous school bands, you’ll hear performances from our choirs and new ukulele group, recorder ensemble and string ensemble.

Even if your child isn’t performing, come along to enjoy the music, see what our programs offer and support our talented students. The BBQ will be sizzling with sausages and drinks for sale – so bring the family for a great night of music and community spirit!

Regards,

John Nguyen

THIS WEEK AT DPS

Debating Report Term 2-Week 9

This week DPS debated against Dobroyd Point Public School. The topic was ‘There should be stricter regulations on advertising targeting children'.

The affirmative team, the Abbotts were the away team, with James as 1st speaker, Ella as 2nd speaker, David as 3rd speaker and Maeve as team advisor. They argued that here in Australia, regulations on advertising to children are not strongly enforced and that stricter regulations are necessary to protect their mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

The Frasers were the home team. Their  team included 1st speaker Claire, 2nd speaker Isaac , 3rd speaker Ashton and team advisor Delilah. As the negative, they argued that we already have strict regulations in Australia and that parental responsibility played a role in what children were exposed to. They also pointed out that not all advertising aimed at children is negative.

Well done to both teams on trying their best despite losing their debates.

A big thankyou to Maeve’s dad, Brendan, for providing transport for the away team. Also, thanks to chairperson Elizabeth and timekeepers Oliver and Charlotte who were also meeters and greeters.

Calmsley Hill Farm Excursion

It was windy weather for Kindergarten on Wednesday as we embarked on our excursion to Calmsley Hill Farm! Students met some lovely farm animals and even milked Daisy the Cow.

We were treated to an exciting tractor ride and finished the day with a whip cracking and sheep dog demonstrations.

Mimosa Concert Rehearsals

On Thursday, Mrs Sole and the Stage 2 students from the Drummoyne Recorder and String Ensembles went to Marsden High School for our Opera House rehearsal. We met Dan and Luke, our conductors, who will be leading us at the Opera House. We also met the students from all the schools that will be performing with us. We saw all the different types of recorders that will be part of the show, from the big bass recorders to the smaller descant recorders like we will be playing.

All the different string instruments were also there from violins and violas to big cellos. Olivia and Matt were star violinists and the teachers were impressed with their composure and technique especially when they had been standing for 4 hours!

We had a great day and we are looking forward to performing at the Opera House next term. Exciting!!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Peer Support

The Peer Support program will be formally coming to an end next week, however we have plans to remain connected. Next week we have 2 sessions - Wednesday we will further develop the range of strategies we can use in challenging situations. This session focuses on step 3 of the model, Proceed. In order to learn from situations and move forward children need to go beyond thinking of strategies and action them. Children recognise despite the use of a range of strategies, sometimes they cannot change the situation. At these times, it is important to accept the situation and move forward with a positive outlook.

Encourage your child to follow through strategies they have discussed and planned to use. It is important to then help them evaluate if this has worked or if they need to try a different strategy.

On Friday during our final session of the Peer Support module Moving Forward, children will reflect on what they have learned over the past seven weeks. The students will make a cube to remind them to draw on their strengths, achievements and people who support them when faced with challenging situations. These protective factors promote confidence and motivate students to approach new situations where they can then apply the Pause, Plan, Proceed Model.

Be A M.A.T.E. and Make Allergy Treatment Easier

Having a food allergy can impact on a child’s participation in school and other activities. With support, understanding, and education of children, parents/carers, and the wider school community, everyone can include children with food allergy and help to keep them safe.

Anyone can Be a M.A.T.E. by following these five easy steps:

Always take food allergies seriously

It may be hard to believe food that most of us eat and enjoy every day can be harmful to others, but people who have food allergy can have serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), which can be life threatening.

Don’t share food with mates who have food allergy

Everyone loves to share or swap food with each other. But for those with food allergies this can be very dangerous. Never share your food with mates with food allergies. Even if you think the food is safe, it’s still not worth taking the risk.

Always wash hands after eating

Always wash your hands after eating something another student is allergic to. This will help keep them safe.

Know what your mates are allergic to

Ask your mates what food they are allergic to. Consider your mates with food allergy when eating your food and try not to be messy. For school birthday parties and celebrations consider non-food treats and activities like stamps and stickers.

Get help straight away if a mate gets sick (even if they don’t want you to)

If a mate who has food or insect allergies is showing these signs tell them to stay where they are and get a teacher or person in charge straight away:

  • Finding it hard to breathe
  • Skin that is bumpy, red, and itchy
  • Swelling of the face, lips, and eyes
  • Vomiting
  • Looking pale and feeling dizzy

Student Safety Reminder – Use the Kerbside Door

We’ve noticed an increasing number of students exiting vehicles from the road-side door during drop-off and pick-up. This is a serious safety risk, and we want to avoid any accidents.

Please help us keep all students safe by ensuring your child always enters and exits the car from the kerbside door. A few extra seconds of care can make all the difference.

Thanks for your support in keeping our school community safe!

Lost Property

With the recent cold weather changes students are taking their jackets on and off throughout the day and many are ending up, unclaimed, in lost property!

Office staff have been endeavoring to return items to students where the owner's name is clearly marked but many items have no name or the name of a student who has left the school.

Please clearly mark your child's hats, jackets, lunchboxes etc and encourage them to be responsible for their belongings.

Thank you

Enrol Younger Siblings for 2026 Now!

Important information if your child travels to school by bus

Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services.

How can you help? Please remind your child to tap on and off and ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card) and remind them to tap on and tap off on every trip.

To apply for a school Opal card, visit https://transportnsw.info/school-travel-apply.  Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings.  Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.
