Term 2 Week 7 Newsletter - Friday 9 June 2023

PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Return of Year 5 Campers

Our Year 5 students have had an exciting time at their overnight excursion to Bathurst and beyond.  From all reports, they are to be commended on their behaviour, teamwork, and resilience. I would like to sincerely thank our executive and staff namely: Orla Page, Kathy Xenos, James Roche and Jacqui Hill for giving up their own family time to provide such a rich learning experience for the children.

Parent Workshop on Mathematics

We are excited to let you know that private consultant Anita Chin will run a parent workshop on mathematics on Wednesday afternoon 16th August from 2.15pm.  Further details will be provided next term but please note this date in your diaries and plan to join us.

New Sports House Names

We are pleased to announce that our sport's house names are changing with each house to reflect an aspect of caring for Country.  The house names are blue house - Water, green house - Tree, yellow house - Sun and red house - Earth.

The names will be in our local Indigenous language and send a strong reminder to students to care for Country and are a step towards understanding the local connections to Country.  This follows consultation with our students through the SRC, staff, First Nation's families, Department consultants and our local AECG.

Full School Uniform

I would like to thank all families who ensure that children are in full school uniform every day, especially during the colder weather. Your commitment to maintain the high standards of uniform and behaviour at the school reinforces that Drummoyne PS is a very special place to learn.

Kiss and Drop Zones

Thank you also to our parents who take great care each day to drive and park safely around the school. Your diligence contributes greatly to the safe arrival and pickup of our students. In the interest of the continued safety of our children and courtesy to other families, parents are asked not to park in the ‘NO PARKING’ area at the side of the school. This is an area to drop off and pick up children with a 1-2 minute limit. Drivers are not permitted to leave their vehicles. Please use this area as a ‘Kiss and Drop’ zone. Your help in maintaining safety around our school is greatly appreciated.

Family Law

Sadly sometimes relationships break down and a court makes orders that change the contact parents can have with their children or the role they play in making decisions about their children’s education. These can be Parenting Orders or Apprehended Violence Orders. Parents can also reach agreement about issues such as contact in a parenting plan.

If this happens it is important that you provide the school with a copy of any court orders or plan that could impact on your child’s education.

In the absence of any notification to the contrary, the school will assume that both parents continue to retain a shared and equal parental responsibility for their children and should be involved in making any decisions regarding their children’s education.

This means that the school will recognise that each parent has equal duties, obligations, responsibilities and opportunities in relation to matters involving the school.

If any changes occur in your family relationships which have the potential to impact on the relationship between the school and your family, please advise the school immediately and provide a copy of any court orders that may be obtained.

These orders will be stored securely and only accessed by staff who need to see them in order to plan for your children’s learning and support and related issues.

2024 Kindergarten Places Now Limited

Applications are now being finalised for Kindergarten 2024. If your child turns 5 before July 31, 2024 they are eligible to start school next year. We would appreciate if families in our local area would submit their applications as soon as possible.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Medication at school

There are times when your child may require medicine to be administered at school. To support this process and ensure the dosage is correct and medicine is stored securely, please complete the form “Request for administration of prescribed medication to a student” which can be found on our website or collected from the Admin office and hand it in at the office with the medicine. No student should keep medication in their bags.

Thank you for supporting the health and safety of our students.

Lost property – Please label everything!

There is a large amount of lost property near the Kindie corridor. Parents may now come on site and check for any lost items at drop off or pick up time.

Please ensure your child’s name is permanently and clearly labelled on belongings such as school hats, jackets, lunch boxes, drink bottles and school bags.

Use a permanent laundry marker to label clothes, hats and shoes, or sew or iron on personalised labels, go through your child’s bag with them regularly and check that labels haven’t faded with washing.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

RAT kits are available from the school office if needed

RAT kits were sent home with all students at the end of Term 1. Even so, if any children are experiencing COVID symptoms and parents would like another box of RAT'S for continued testing, please call or visit the office to arrange collection.

COVID-smart measures in schools

Our layered COVID-smart measures – staying home if unwell, hygiene and cleaning practices, testing for COVID-19, masks strongly encouraged and ventilation – will continue this term. More details on our Advice for families page.

NSW Health advise that during the winter months, COVID will continue to present a health risk to the community. Accordingly, schools will implement baseline COVID-smart measures to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members. These key COVID-smart measures include:

  • staying home and getting tested if unwell, and only attending school when symptom free.

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and staff. Please contact us for test kits.

Staying home when sick

With flu cases on the rise, we would like to remind you that simple hygiene such as regularly washing hands will help stop the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

Students are asked to stay home when sick. They should only attend school when they are symptom free.

Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing symptoms of flu or COVID 19 are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses (e.g. allergies or hay fever) that require treatment and management by a doctor.

HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH THE NEW CURRICULUM

Handwriting at home K-2

Kindergarten

Focuses on producing all lower-case and upper-case letters correctly and legibly.

You can help your Kindergarten child at home by:

  • encouraging your child to write with the hand that feels most comfortable and to use a grip that is efficient

  • developing their fine motor skills by engaging them in activities such as threading a shoelace through a pattern, using scissors to cut out shapes and playing finger games, using pegs to hang paper or material on a line

  • assisting your child to correctly write the letters of the alphabet and to write simple words using a variety of materials or supplies. For example, using brightly coloured pens and pencils on paper.

    Year 1 and 2

Focuses on using a legible, fluent and automatic handwriting style when forming all upper-case and lower-case letters. It also focuses on developing keyboarding skills using digital technologies and wordprocessing applications.

You can help your Year 1 or Year 2 child at home by:

    • encouraging them to leave a space about the width of a finger between words, as well as placing letters on the line

    • helping to reinforce consistent letter height formations for tall letters, such as t, b and k, tail letters, such as g, y and j as well as short letters such as a, c and v

    • assisting them to become familiar with a computer keyboard to type familiar words and simple sentences using punctuation such as full stops.

      New books

Here are a few of the new books we have recently added to our collection. Have a look!

All about the heart - Does your heart really stop when you sneeze? Can it break? How does our heart compare to the heart of other creatures? Curious kids will find the answers to all their questions and more in All About the Heart by paediatric cardiologist Dr Remi Kowalski and illustrated by Tonia Composto.

Alight shares the story of Australian native plants and animals during a planned fire. Discover how the fire helps Christmas Bells grow new flowers and Wallum Banksia to open its woody seed capsules. Follow Antechinus and a tiny Wallum Sedge Frog as they face the danger of the fire – and the challenges that come after. See how the bush recovers and flourishes after the fire, all under the watch of Old Eucalypt.

The Tree and the River is an epic time-lapse reimagining of human civilization from a master of the wordless form, and a thought-provoking meditation on the relationship between two mighty forces: nature and humankind.

Etta and the shadow taboo - When Etta steps on Baawaa’s (her sister's) shadow, she learns of the Shadow Taboo, and learns to value the personal space of others, as well as her own.

Written by Gamilaraay author JM Field and illustrated by Ngarabal/Gomeroi artist Jeremy Worrall, Etta and the Shadow Taboo will invite readers to follow a Gamilaraay tradition where one must avoid stepping on the shadows of others.

From amphibians and reptiles to monotremes and pilosa, discover our world of enchanting fauna in this stunning, illustrated book, Wildlife Compendium of the World by Tania McCartney

Runt - A heart-warming, funny, beautifully told story for readers of all ages from the bestselling author of Jasper Jones and Honeybee.

      GENERAL NEWS

Tap on and tap off, every time you travel by bus

Our school is partnering with the local school bus operator, Busways, to support a new Tap On and Tap Off education campaign encouraging students who travel by bus to correctly use their school Opal cards. Busways is implementing this campaign throughout Term 3, 2023. This campaign will focus on a simple message – tap on and tap off every time you travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important?

The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services. How can you help? If your child travels to school by bus, please ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card).

Visit Transport for NSW website to apply for a school Opal card. Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings. Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.

Thank you for your support with this campaign.

      June P&C Meeting Online

The next P&C meeting will be held on Tuesday 20 June 2023 online.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  The details for parents to join us will be provided next month.

Reminder - please return your P&C Volunteer Form ASAP

Each year our parent community plays a vital role in supporting Drummoyne Public School.  We are very fortunate to be part of such a wonderful community! The richness of school life that the children enjoy is due to the ongoing support of parents, grandparents and friends of the school.

One important avenue of support is through P&C organised activities, providing funds each year for various projects.

The purpose of this post is to ask all families to support the organisation of one P&C activity this year.  Our hope is that all families will ‘play a part’ in enriching the lives and learning of our children through volunteering for just one activity.

Would you please indicate on the form attached below one P&C activity or role that you would be willing to be involved in this year and hand to your child’s class teacher at a parent teacher interview or to the school office and record your willingness to support the school and P&C.

This information will be collated and a member of the P&C will be in touch in due course.

We hope that 2023 is a wonderful year for you and your family.
