Term 3 Week 3 and Week 4 - 4th - 15th August 2025

Principal's Blog

Welcome to Term 3 Week 4!

Education Week

Education Week is an annual celebration of NSW public education and the achievements of our schools, teachers and students. Education Week will be held next week from 18th – 22nd August

This year CBPS will be celebrating both Education Week and Book Week next week. We are also including an amazing School Art Show.

Next week we will be celebrating on Tuesday 19th with our Book Character Parade, open classrooms, Book Fair and the Art Show. Parents, families and carers are invited to come along and join in this awesome event with us.

NAIDOC Week

Last week saw our school come together to recognise and celebrate NAIDOC Week. This year was the 50th year anniversary of NAIDOC events in Australia. Mrs Chensee, Mr Josh and Miss Ray came together to organise two amazing assemblies and activities throughout this week where our students could hear stories, see art, listen to music, and share learning that honours the rich cultures, deep histories, and incredible contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

As part of our NAIDOC celebrations, I am pleased to share that we have made a connection with the Nyikina Mangala Community school. Nyikina Mangala Community School sits within the Jarlmadangah Burru Aboriginal community, located on Mt Anderson Station, west of Derby, in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. We are currently planning some fund-raising events to raise money for a sail to cover an outdoor learning space at the school. One of our fundraisers included our gold coin donation for an out of uniform day last Wednesday.

I wish to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of our Aboriginal parents, families and staff from both CBPS, SHS and others. Your partnership, wisdom & ongoing support deeply enrich our school community. Whether through cultural guidance, leadership or connection with country & community you help shape a more inclusive & respectful environments for all.

Check-in assessment for Years 3 - 6

Dear parents and carers,

During Term 3, students will participate in the Check-in assessment.

The Check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online literacy and numeracy assessment available to support schools to assess and monitor student learning.

The assessment can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs. Students with disability may receive the same level of support during the assessment they would normally receive in the classroom.

·         The assessment will be scheduled for our Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 students during Weeks 6 to 9 (Monday 25 August to Friday 19 September) with a finalisation week in week 10 (22 September to 26 September).

·         All students complete a reading assessment and a numeracy assessment. Year 6 students will also complete a writing assessment during weeks 6 to 9.

Debating

Congratulations to our debating team - Violet, Oliver, Mila and Nina - who won Round 3 of the NSW Premiers Debating Challenge against Marks Point.

Our debaters have won 3 out of 3 debates so far!!! The next one is next Wednesday, good luck!!

Hunter Super Nova Camp

These students just wrapped up an amazing few days at the Hunter Super Nova Camp. The energy, creativity, and curiosity was amazing.

From brain-bending challenges to hands-on workshops, inspiring sessions, and plenty of laughs along the way, our HPGE students truly shone.

A huge shoutout to Mrs Chensee for organising the opportunity for our students and to Amara, Blake, Bon and Aiden for representing Caves Beach Public School.

Grow Your Mind

Now that we have learnt who each of our Grow Your Mind animals are

and the valuable benefits they have for our mental health.

The next step, is to understand how to use them.

With us all returning to school this week, what better way to look after each other than by showing kindness. When we are kind, we SHRINK our Guard Dog and we GROW our Wise Owl! We are rewarded with a feeling of happiness.

How will you show kindness this week?

Learning and Support

Understanding Decodable Readers

Decodable readers are an important part of learning to read. These books are carefully written to match the phonics skills children are being taught in class. For example, if students have learned the sounds for s, a, t, p, i, and n, their decodable book will use only words made from those letters - such as sat, pin, or tap - along with a small number of heart words (words to ‘learn by heart’, like was and are). This allows children to practise blending sounds together to read whole words, rather than relying on guessing or memorising.

As your child’s phonics knowledge grows, so too will the complexity of the books they bring home. Decodable readers are not the only kind of book your child should enjoy, but they are a crucial stepping stone in learning how to ‘crack the code’ of reading.

When you're reading to your child or exploring books together, focus on choosing books that spark interest and enjoyment - there’s no need to stick to decodables for shared reading. We want children to LOVE books, so save the decodable readers for when your child is reading independently, and dive into rich, engaging stories together to build curiosity, comprehension, and joy in reading.

 State Music Camp

In week 1 of this term a group of stage 3 students attended the NSW State Music camp held in Sydney. This was a 5-night camp which allowed students to dive deeper into their music making and expand their musical skills. Lance and I were lucky enough to accompany these students for the week where these students proudly represented Caves Beach PS. The camp ended with an impressive concert which involved all 250 students performing in a variety of ensembles.

Congratulations Rebecca, Amelia, Gracie, Toby, Emily and Lilah.

Library News

Education Week and Book Week

To celebrate Education Week and Book Week, parents, carers and friends are invited to our annual book parade and book fair, as well as performances and a whole school art show which will showcase the creativity and dedication of our students. The theme for Book Week this year is ‘Book an Adventure’. For the parade, students can come dressed as their favourite book character or as someone who inspires them. This event will take place on Tuesday August 19th. We hope to see you all there.

Book Fair

This year, we will have a selection of books available from Scholastic. The Book Fair will be in the library from Tuesday August 19th to Thursday August 21st. It will be open during open classrooms for our Education Week/Book Week celebrations and from 8:30am to 9:15am in the morning. Book fairs help your school stack up on resources to enrich your children’s education. Best of all, each fair provides kids access to more books. More books means more choice, which means kids get to read books they want to read. The right book can ignite a passion for reading so we encourage families to work together to create a reading culture at home.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Just a friendly reminder that the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge is still open. Student entries for years 3-6 close on Friday 19th September. If you require any assistance or have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.
