St Mary's Catholic School Boyup Brook

Term 4, Week 7 Newsletter

Principals Address

Good afternoon everyone,

What a busy and exciting fortnight we’ve had at St Mary’s! It was truly fantastic to see our school community come together on Friday for the End of Year Christmas Concert. The effort and creativity shown by our teachers and students made the celebration a memorable one, and it was wonderful to share this special occasion with so many families.

Thank you to everyone who attended our School AGM. With 25 community members present, it was great to see such strong interest in the future direction of our school. For those who were unable to attend, a copy of the minutes is included below for your reference.

This week, students are participating in swimming lessons, which means each class spends a significant part of the day at the pool before returning to school. These sessions can be quite tiring, so we encourage families to pack a few extra snacks to help keep students energised throughout the day.

Looking ahead, next Wednesday after lunch we will hold our transition day. This is a valuable opportunity for students to explore their learning environments for next year and meet their teachers, ask questions, and feel prepared for the year ahead.

We are excited for the final eight days of the school year as we wrap up 2025 and look forward to all that lies ahead in 2026. Thank you for your continued support in making St Mary’s a vibrant and caring learning community.

Kind regards,

Michael Patrick

St Vincent de Paul - Christmas Food Appeal

The St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal is one way our students can help and give to others in our community of Boyup Brook. Christmas is a special time to spend with family and celebrate the birth of Jesus together.

We ask kindly families if they can donate something from the class list below:

Kindy/Pre Primary - Tinned vegetables

Year 1/2 - Rice

Year 3/4– Fruit Juice

Year 5/6 – Long life custard

Each classroom has a box to place your items in, these will then be added to the hampers made up by the St Vincent de Paul volunteers from each church just before Christmas.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any queries.

Kind regards

Sharon Nield

Kindy and Pre Primary Rap Up!

We seem to have just had some super busy and exciting weeks lately. Out star event was the athletics carnival where every student completed every event with determination and skill, showing all the spectators just how capable four, five and six year olds can be.

The pre-primary children have been very busy writing recounts including one about their holiday adventures, one about the volcano in the sandpit and one about the athletics carnival. In maths they have been looking at the teen numbers and trying to fathom the concept of ‘ten and some more’. The kindy children have been revising the single letter sounds, carefully counting out quantities and partitioning numbers.

Both year groups have looked at maps of the world, our continent and our state. All the children drew a little image of a place in Western Australia that they had visited and we added these to a very large state map that we made. ‘Camel Soak’ near Perenjori was the furthest place from Boyup Brook that anyone drew a picture of.

In Religious Education the students have discussed how important it is to be able to say sorry in a meaningful way. They have also been discussing how everyone’s name is different and how their names might have been chosen.

Outside the children have enjoyed creating some quite large inventions, including a large ‘candy making machine’ complete with conveyor belt. This machine turns soft toys into chocolate animals.

We were all lucky enough to have former student Sienna Rhodes join us for a week of work experience. Sienna quickly established a wonderful rapport with the children and made everyone’s life a little brighter.

Year 3/4 Rap Up

As we head towards the end of the year, our classroom has been buzzing with exciting activities!

Literacy

We’ve been exploring poetry in creative ways! Students wrote imaginative poems using nonsense words and illustrated them to bring their ideas to life. We also adapted poems to give them a bush poetry twist, featuring Australian animals and country themes. A highlight was a visit from Bill Gordon, a member of the WA Bush Poets. Bill listened to students recite their own poems, shared some of his favourites, and explained how bush poetry competitions work.

Math

Our focus has been on 3D shapes, comparing their features and learning how to identify them. We’ve also practiced breaking large numbers into smaller parts to solve equations mentally. We’re finishing Module 12 and enjoying a festive challenge with the 12 Days of Christmas Math Puzzle!

Religion

We completed our unit on Baptism, exploring its symbols, colours, and importance in the Catholic Church. Students studied scripture passages, watched videos of Baptisms, and researched how the sacrament has changed since the time of John the Baptist.

Health

We investigated health messages about healthy eating, sleep, screen time, sun safety, and physical activity—from local to national levels. Students then turned these messages into creative health-themed poems!

HASS

Our geography unit focused on climate—locally, globally, and in neighbouring countries. Students created postcards celebrating our amazing climate and even designed their own imaginary planets, complete with unique weather, plants, and animals.

We’re excited to finish our learning tasks and enjoy some Christmas activities together before the year ends.

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas filled with joy and time with loved ones!

Mrs Melanie Elks

Year 5/6 Rap Up

Our class has been learning about the season of Advent by exploring the Church calendar. We have read about the prophets Isaiah and John the Baptist who foretold the coming of Jesus and explored the different names by which Jesus is referred to in the Bible including The Good Shepherd and Messiah.

In Guided Reading we have been practising the skill of summarising a text, this can be challenging, deciding which details to include and which to leave out. We have explored odes and anthems in our poetry writing. Now poetry anthologies are being created to showcase our poetry writing skills all about one theme. You can see some of our creations below. While writing an anthem is extremely challenging, it has been very exciting to see everyone rising to the challenge, giving thought to the message they want to convey and choosing words and phrases carefully to achieve the goal.

We have been enjoying exploring the world of Economics in HASS recently. Everyone has a good knowledge of how resources can be classified and we have explored how retailers may advertise goods as being a need when really they are just a want. This led to some discussions about being critical viewers and not just falling for the persuasiveness of ads! After viewing a video about some of the weirdest jobs in the world we investigated what qualifications and personal qualities people might require to fill these positions.
