Letter from the Principal, Kelli Johnston

Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2025 school year.  We hope that all families enjoyed wonderful Christmas and New Year celebrations, as well as a terrific holiday period. The January break provided us with amazing summer weather. This was a wonderful opportunity to enjoy terrific days in all that Melbourne and Victoria have to see and explore, as well as opportunities to gather with friends and family. We hope that all our families have enjoyed a safe period of rest, rejuvenation and are ready for an exciting 2025.

As a staff we officially commenced the school year today. As a team we spent the morning revisiting the St John the Baptist professional expectations and operation guidelines. This included professional requirements and responsibilities in relation to Child Safety, SJB School Wide Expectations and the MACS Code of Conduct. Additionally, the staff engaged in professional learning in relation to a number of assessment tools we will use in alignment with the MACS Vision for Instruction Framework.  This professional learning opportunity strongly aligns with the St John the Baptist School Improvement Plan and Annual Action Plan.

Whilst the first day of the school year was today, the staff have been onsite and/or working from home busily planning and preparing for the return of students. We thank all staff for their dedication and hard work in ensuring a smooth and wonderful start to the school year. We thank our families for making bookings for the beginning of the year Learning Interviews and for your support with ensuring students are punctual to their interviews.

This year we welcome the return of our dedicated and committed St John the Baptist staff who are well known to the parish and school communities.  We also warmly welcome Mrs Anita Arslanian to the role of Learning Support Officer to SJB. Anita has a wealth of experience as a LSO, as well as a strong background in Wellbeing and counselling.  We are very excited as our SJB team brings a wonderful mix of experience, expertise, deep pedagogical knowledge, passion and dedication as a group of educators. We look forward to continuing to collaborate, learn and grow together to consolidate our shared beliefs and understandings and continue to provide our students with the best educational experiences.

We are looking forward to welcoming back our school community as a whole this Friday 31st January. It is always great to see how students have grown and changed over their break, as well as sharing in the excitement of getting to know their teacher and settling in with new classmates. We always look forward to welcoming our Preps and settling them in as our newest members of our St John’s community.  We wish everyone a fabulous start to the school year and look forward to working in partnership with our families and community, as we work together to create an environment for our students to thrive and flourish.

We warmly invite families to join us for a cuppa and re-connections from 8:45am on Friday 31st January in the school hall.  This is a great opportunity to reconnect with our families and welcome our new families to the SJB community. We hope to see you there.

Beginning of the School Year Mass

We invite all families to join us for the Beginning of School Year mass to be celebrated on Thursday  13th February, at 9:15am. The Beginning of School Year mass is a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community of faith to commence a new year.

This year the Catholic Church celebrates a Jubilee year with the theme ‘Pilgrims of Hope’. Pope Francis encourages us in his Jubilee letter to find ways to celebrate with deep faith, lively hope and active charity. Commencing our year together as a parish and school community provides us with the opportunity to commence our year as ‘Pilgrims of Hope.’

School Pick & Drop Off Family Options

As the school building program continues the ‘Kiss and Go’ will continue in 2025. We will have staff on duty in the lower car park each morning between 8:30 - 8:45am to ensure safety for all at the morning drop off.  Students will be walked to ‘Kiss & Go’ at 3:10pm each afternoon to be placed in cars.  To ensure safety of all, students are to strictly enter and exit cars on the passenger side of cars.

Students attending OHSC or being picked up onsite will remain in class until 3:15pm each day.

We thank all families for their ongoing support, patience and understanding as we ensure a safe and smooth drop off and pick up for all students.

Conveniently, parents can also use the Audiri app to advise student absences when required.

We ask that families install the Audiri app on their phones and then add St John the Baptist School. Information on how to add the Audiri app and St John the Baptist School can be found at the end of the newsletter.
