ZIG ZAG Public School

Term 3 Week 2

Principals report

The start of Term 3 has certainly been a busy but FUN start for Zig Zag Public School.

The second week isn’t over yet and we have already had:

·         Term 3 School Development Day – where the teachers had a focus on reviewing and developing our new School Behaviour and Support Management Plan- ready for implementation in 2025.

·         Whole School Reward for Term 1 and 2- the school ticket jar is full; so we combined our “Green and Gold” themed day for the start of the Olympics and held a mini Olympics day for all to enjoy. This was such a fun day!

·         Puffing Billies has started and we have lots of very excited little people, getting ready to start “Big School”

·         Parent/Teacher and Student Interviews are underway. Thank you to everyone who has booked an appointment.

·         Whole School Measurement Day – with a focus on learning about and how to use the tools for measuring- AREA, PERIMETER, LENGTH, CAPACITY and MASS. Student engagement in all activities was AMAZING.

·         Nine News, Central West made a surprise visit to our school yesterday, after seeing our “Shout Outs to Lachi Sharp” on Face Book. Hope you were able to watch the News at 5.30pm

·         Mrs Wallace and 5/6 are attending the “First Foot Forward Program” at Lithgow Transformation Hub today. We can’t wait to hear all about their day!

·         Our entry, “Journey through the 218- Zig Zagging through cardboard”, was delivered safely to Parkes, ready for the 2024 SIMS Metal -Waste 2 Art Regional Showcase, opening on the 10th August.

We have lots more planned with three major events happening over the next 3 weeks:

·         Next Week is Education Week – Open Day is Thursday 8th August.

·         Week 4 is the new date for our postponed Longneck Incursion.

·         Week 5 is Book Week – Book Parade is Thursday 22nd August.

It is lovely to see Parents, Grandparents and Carers around the school.

Kind Regards

Vicki Gillmore

Waste to Art

Artwork title: "Journey on the 218: Zig Zagging through Cardboard

This year, students at Zig Zag Public School from Kindergarten to Year 6 have collaborated to create a three-dimensional artwork inspired by the Zig Zag Railway's iconic 218 locomotive engine. Utilising cardboard packaging from our new computers and additional cardboard from school supply deliveries, the students have meticulously developed the form and foundations of the engine.

In their classes, students designed and constructed each part of the engine with care. They used a cardboard tube and a series of discs to shape the boiler, while the base was built from the cardboard ends included in the computer boxes. This intricate texture gives the engine a mechanical quality, enhanced by the many strips of cardboard cut and applied in both horizontal and vertical orientations, resulting in a strong, industrial texture. To create the plume of steam exiting the boiler funnel, students creatively repurposed ticket stumps from their recent excursion on the Zig Zag Railway. They have also used them to line the floor of the engine to symbolise not only their trip on the train, but their connected and collaborative learning journey. Wooden dowel rods, bottle caps and skewers were also incorporated to strengthen the sculpture, acting as supportive pins.

This engine represents the steam train sounds our students hear in our playground and the deep connection our school has to the Zig Zag Railway. It is deeply embedded in our school culture and resonates strongly with our families, many of whom work or have worked on the railway. This artwork is a tribute to our school's history; its name was suggested by teacher Robert Dennis in 1910 ‘because we are a stone’s throw’ from the Zig Zag Railway, and this heritage is also proudly emblemised in our school badge. The students view this artwork as a symbol of their journey through school, reflecting their strength and commitment to keep moving forward.

Around the School

Naidoc Workshop

Our students joined authors Adam Goodes, Ellie Laing and illustrator David Hardy today via a special online NAIDOC Event with the NSW State Library. They engaged with First Nations culture and heritage in a great NAIDOC workshop.

5/6 Quatrain Poetry

Our 5/6 students have been writing Quatrain (kwaa-train) Poems.

This type of rhyming poetry is a stanza of four lines.

Sometimes a Quatrain is an entire poem, at other times they are part of a larger poem. They can be stacked like blocks.

Quatrains are fun to write and recite!

National School's Tree Day

On Monday we planted trees for Planet Ark’s National Tree Day.

The boys and girls planted native saplings at various places around our school.

Planet Ark's National Tree Day started in 1996 and has grown into Australia's largest community tree planting and nature care event.

Thank you Lithgow Lean and Bennett Quality Cars for supporting Tree Day and providing the saplings from Lithgow & District Community Nursery for our Tree Day event.

Green & Gold Day

We had a wonderful day embracing the Olympic Spirit for our Green and Gold Day.

We send extra special Olympic wishes to our ex-student Lachi Sharp and the Kookaburras.

We’ll be cheering for you!

We wish the entire Australian Olympic Team a wonderful 2024 Olympic Experience in Paris.

Zig Zag Mini Olympics

The jar of tickets was full and so it was time for a whole school reward … Mini Olympics on our Green and Gold Day!

Our special event was heard to be ‘the best’, where the real prize was the happiness and joy everyone had from joining in.

The boys and girls moved around a wide range of ‘Olympic Sports’ with their friends. They even had an opening walk of honour and finished with a medal ceremony for wonderful Olympic Spirit.
