June 2023 Newsletter

Principals report

I can’t believe we are already half way through Term 2.

We have had an extremely busy term with many activities occurring across the school.

Some of the activities have included:

· A variety of sporting opportunities, not forgetting 4 weeks of another successful Sporting Schools program.

· Longneck Lagoon EEC incursion – showcasing story book stem learning

· Music Lessons continue with the addition of ZZPS first ever BAND lessons.

· Our teachers continue to trial and implement the new syllabus for English and Mathematics, being supported by Mrs Savath in the APCI role for Curriculum Reform and targeted professional learning days.

In this newsletter we have included some information for your reference, regarding Curriculum Reform and Working Mathematically.

Reconciliation Week:

This week is National Reconciliation Week, which is a time for all Australians to learn about

our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us

can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The theme for this year is…

“Be a VOICE for GENERATIONS – Act today for a reconciled tomorrow”

Yesterdays Reconciliation – Yarning Circle activity began with sharing Class Acknowledgements, then Aunty Judith shared her knowledge and stories about the use of Bush plants for food and medicine.

We then potted our very first bush tucker tree which will be cared for by our newly established Junior AECG team.

In addition to learning about Reconciliation through whole school slides all Zig Zag students have come together to create a collaborative three-dimensional artwork inspired by the Wiradjuri totem 'Gugaa' (goanna). Goanna has been positioned in an upright stance to symbolise physical and emotional strength along with leadership and forming strong kinships throughout the school.

Attendance

Every day counts

· Regular attendance helps students to:

-develop a sense of belonging

-develop and maintain friendships

-become more engaged at school

-progress with their learning

-be more aware of career and life options

Supporting positive school attendance is a shared responsibility- everyone has a role.

THANKYOU

We had a great response from our request for Third Party Software consents to be returned by the end of this week.

We only have  10% left to obtain, which means we will be able to begin to use platforms that support our students learning VERY SOON.

I really appreciate your support with this matter.

The winner of the $100.00 Gift Voucher is Cassandra Anderson

Curriculum

Curriculum Reform

Curriculum is the core of teaching and learning. So we are excited about the positive changes brought about by Curriculum Reform and the opportunities it presents for our students.

Curriculum Reform involves streamlining and reinforcing the key concepts taught in schools across NSW. By focusing on what is truly essential, more time is given for in-depth learning opportunities.

This term our staff have been engaged in changes that Curriculum Reform has brought to teaching Mathematics. One of the biggest changes is to bring the concept of Working Mathematically to center stage in our Math lessons.

Working Mathematically describes the thinking and doing of Maths.

The four main processes of Working Mathematically are:

Communicating: Students learn to express their Maths ideas effectively.

Understanding and Fluency: Building a strong foundation in Maths concepts and skills for confident application.

Reasoning: Encouraging critical thinking, analysing information, and making logical connections.

Problem Solving: Equipping students to tackle real-world challenges using their Maths knowledge.

Measurement Focus

Curriculum and Instruction

Measurement Focus

We have had a whole school focus on Measurement. This has included Professional Development for all our teachers in the area of Measurement.

Current research helps us to know that learning to measure requires understanding in how measurement skills build on early skills into developed skills.

How are measuring skills developed?

We explicitly teach children the skills and application of measurement, but to become experts they need practise! Lots and lots of practise.

Pre-school

Comparing objects by size

big, bigger, biggest

Early Measurement Skills

Comparing objects by length, height, weight

longer, shorter, longest, shortest

taller, tallest, shorter, shortest

heavy, light, heavier, lighter

Middle Skills

Using non standard forms of measurement

hand lengths, body lengths, foot lengths, lego brick lengths

Knowing Units

Length and height is measured in mm, cm, m, km

Capacity is measured in ml, L

Weight is measured in g, kg, tonnes

Knowing Units

100cm = 1m

1000gm = 1kg

1000ml = 1litre

Knowing that 60cm and 90cm is the same as 1.5m

Would you like to know more about this?

Join our Parents and Carers Facebook Group. You can ask and respond to information we will be sharing about Measurement in the coming weeks.

Reconciliation Week

Thankyou Aunty Judith

National Reconciliation Week

This is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements; and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

We recognised the Reconciliation Week theme

“Be a Voice for Generations” today with a special event around the Yarning Circle with a special guest. It was wonderful to listen to Aunty Judith's knowledge about bush tucker and Aboriginal Culture.

Our AECG Student Group and friends, helped to plant a Finger Lime to be cared for in our Yarning Circle.

Thank you Aunty Judith.

'Gugaa'

This year all students at Zig Zag Public School, have come together to create a collaborative three-dimensional artwork inspired by the Wiradjuri totem 'Gugaa' (goanna).

The students used newspaper to form the foundation of the sculpture and fabric mache layers to develop the form and shape of the final artwork which was submitted in the 2023 Waste 2 Art exhibition and competition. ZZPS's 'Gugaa' (goanna) is displayed proudly in the Lithgow Library, representing our work for Reconcilation Week."Be a Voice for Generations -Act today for a reconciled tomorrow"
