Letter from the Principal, Kelli Johnston

Dear Families

Today we had the privilege of listening to our Year 5 students present their speeches for leadership in 2026. Over the past weeks our Year 5 students have prepared letters expressing their interest in leadership positions. It was wonderful to hear their vision for leadership, hope for the future, as well as how they can make a difference at SJB. Whilst this is an exciting time for our Year 5 students there is no doubt that this also brings some nerves too.

It was a delight to meet with our Year 5 students to discuss what it means to be a leader, the expectations that come with being a leader and the opportunities that present for them as leaders. Our Year 4 and 5 students will have the opportunity to listen to the speeches from our candidates and then place their votes for who they believe should be appointed to the various leadership positions.

As we move through the leadership application process we recognise that some students will be successful in receiving their first choice of leadership positions, whilst for others there may be a little disappointment if they receive a role that was not their first choice. As a school we are proud of all students for putting forward their best effort and receiving their respective roles and we know that they will do an outstanding job.

We wish all our Year 5 students all the best as we prepare to announce the Year 6 Leadership positions in the near future. Good luck everyone.

Prep Transition 2026

Last Thursday we held the final 2026 Prep Transition session in preparation for our new Preps for next year. Our future Preps have settled in beautifully and are ready to become school kids.  The 2026 Preps enjoyed meeting their classmates, teachers and buddies. Thursday was a great way to finish preparations for starting school.

We welcomed Carley McGauran, Psychologist to our parent session. Carley shared tips on how to thrive, not just survive starting school. Carley’s relatable manner created a safe and trusting environment reassuring families of the wonderful job they are doing as they prepare for their children to start school.

On Saturday morning our Prep 2026 families came together to enjoy a play date on the SJB naturescape and oval.  It was wonderful to see so many of our families in attendance.

Our families have added additional catch up sessions to their January calendar. Prep 2026 families are invited to attend play dates on January 17th and 24th between 10am - 12pm.

We thank the Schimizzi Family for their great work in organising these events.

Dads and Kids Gilwell Park Camping Weekend

Places are still available for this year’s Dads and Kids Camping Weekend at Gilwell Park. This year’s event will take place on the 6th & 7th December.

Families wishing to attend are able to make payment through Flexischools or contact the school office.

Christmas Carols Night - Save the date!!

The SJB Christmas Carols evening will be held on Thursday 4th December. We look forward to a great evening and seeing our students shine.

Our terrific P & F will be preparing a BBQ for families to order sausages in bread and drinks between 5:30 - 6:30pm prior to Carols commencing.

This year families will pre-order their sausage and drinks through Flexischool between the 19th - 28th November. Families will place their entire order via Flexischool and then simply collect their order on the evening.  This will streamline the process and remove payment on the night. We ask families to please be aware that payment on the evening will be unavailable.

Please see the flyer attached for details.

Leadership Expo

On Tuesday the 18th of November, the year sixes hosted a leadership expo focusing on their leadership positions. There was a table for each of the roles with the leaders stationed at them with posters and pamphlets. Each of the students in their roles, helped each other to create the pamphlets. Everyone worked so well together to make the expo possible, and it turned out so well.

Smart Watch Policy

As a school we have experienced a significant increase in students wearing smart watches. Throughout the year the school has worked through a thorough process to create a Smart Watch Policy that aligns with the Australian Government’s social media age restrictions, alignment with our feeder secondary college policies and community feedback.

We ask that all families read the Smart Watch Policy shared through Operoo and take time to discuss with their child.  Students wearing a smart watch to school will be required to sign their watch into the school office at the commencement of each day and collect their watch at the end of the day.  Alternatively students are encouraged to leave their watch at home.

We thank all families for their ongoing support and understanding in this area.

Access to Semester 2 Reports - Distributed Tuesday December 9th (4pm)

The Semester 2 student reports will be distributed on Tuesday 9th December. Student reports are one of the valuable links between school and home to allow you to gain an insight of how your child is progressing with their learning at St John the Baptist.

The reports will be accessible from the Tuesday 9th December at 4.00pm

The online portal has many advantages which include:

-    Accessible on multiple devices

-    Environmentally friendlier than printed reports

If you have trouble accessing your child’s report you are encouraged to contact Mr Wayne Daniell for assistance.

Thanksgiving Mass - 9:15am Tuesday December 16th

We warmly welcome all members of the St John the Baptist community to join us in giving thanks and celebrating the many volunteers and contributions so generously shared throughout the 2025 school year. We welcome classroom helpers, tuckshop helpers, P & F members, SAC members, Working Bee participants and more to our Thanksgiving Mass. We are most fortunate to have an active and vibrant community consisting of parents, grandparents, guardians and members of the community.

After Mass we would like to extend a further warm welcome to our helpers to come together in the hall for Morning Tea.  We would like to thank you all for everything that you have so generously contributed throughout the year.

Donations Needed for Our Collaborative Artwork

Our school is excited to be participating in the Knox City Council Futuristic Wasteland Expo. As part of this event, students are creating a large collaborative artwork that explores two possible futures — one optimistic and one pessimistic — shaped by the choices we make today.

Thank you to our families for the generous donation of boxes; we now have plenty.

We are still seeking toy cars, mini construction vehicles, small figurines, and other small toys that could be incorporated into the final piece.Donations can be left outside the Art Room in the large plastic tub.

Uniform Transition 2026

Families are asked to be aware that from the commencement of 2026 grey shorts and pants will no longer be part of the school uniform.  The light blue socks for girls will also no longer be a uniform item.

At the commencement of 2026 all students are required to wear navy shorts or pants.  Socks will also be navy for all students.

Students are able to continue with the current skorts and sports shorts as these are navy.  Over a period of time these will naturally be phased out with these items being replaced with the new navy items.

Beleza Uniforms

We're excited to announce that our Annual VIP Sale will be running again soon for 2025!

The sale will be running from Saturday 22nd of November to Saturday 29th of November at our Boronia store. Families can receive 20% off Beleza-branded items during this sale period, so it's a great opportunity for families to prepare for the 2026 school year and save on some of those back-to-school costs.

Barry Plant Boronia Christmas Colouring Competition

It’s time to get creative!! The Barry Plant Boronia office has a Christmas colouring competition open for children aged under 12. The name of the winner of this fabulous prize ($300 Toymate voucher) will be drawn out of a Santa hat and announced on Thursday 18th of December at 12pm.

The artwork can be dropped into the Barry Plant Boronia office at 69 Boronia Road, Boronia, via email or at any of our Open for Inspections.

Happy colouring & good luck!!
